Hello All,

As some of you may know, we have been awarded with a Garden Grant!  The grant includes nutrition sessions for our students, PE activities, and an actual garden where students take part in growing and maintaining crops.  It will be located in the back of the building in the fenced off area where the turtle currently is.
We are forming a garden committee and we need 3-4 responsible and reliable parents that we can count on to be part of this committee.    Ideally, parents on the committee should be spread across grade levels so that no more than 1 or 2 parents “graduate out” of the committee at the same time.   So we are looking to elementary grade teachers to help us find the 3-4 parents or middle school teachers who know that their students have younger siblings.  We will have one action day for planting where the gardening staff will need some help-it’s put into place to create a sense of ownership and to also have those 3-4 parents do a check-in on the garden throughout this year and years to come.  It does not require a lot of time.

Also, if any parent/grandparent/legal gardians are interested in taking part in the committee, please let us know.
Thank you!
Ms. Wentland

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Kindergarten!  I would like to take the time to introduce myself to you.  My name is Ms. Amanda Wentland.  I will be your child’s Kindergarten teacher this year. I will be working to ensure that your child will have an exciting, positive learning experience and will successfully finish the Kindergarten program.  I am looking forward to working with your child this year and helping your child to achieve their potential.

Contact information:    Amanda Wentland

You can contact me by phone, email, or in person

  • My email address is wentlaa@dearbornschools.org.  I check it daily and will respond promptly.
  • My phone number is 313-827-1800 ext. 22442.  This number will send your call to my voicemail and you will need to leave a message.  I will call you back as soon as possible.
  • Sign up for my personal blog @: https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/wentlaa/
  • I feel it is important that we communicate often, but in order for me to give you my full attention I can’t be watching the students while talking to you.  If you need to talk to me about your child please wait until all the children have gone home for the day, or let me know and we can set up an appointment.

Arrival /Dismissal:

  • Children need to be lined up by 8:00 a.m. at DOOR #3.  Class begins at 8:05 a.m.  If your child is late you must first report to the office to sign in your child.
  • The children will be dismissed at 3:00 p.m. from the DOOR #3.  It is very important that you pick your child up on time.  They get very worried when parents are late.  Once you pick up your Kindergartener you must wait outside for older children.  Please do not wait in the hallways for them.
  • Also, please let me know if your child will be picked up by someone other than you.  If for some reason you need to pick your child up early you must first go to the office to sign him/her and the office will notify me.  Please do not come to the classroom until you have checked in the office.
  • All children that are bused will ride their regular bus and be dropped off at their regular stop unless you notify the school in the form of a note or phone call.

Classroom Rules:

I expect the children to be respectful and kind to everyone in the classroom and school! Please review these rules your child at home and I will do the same at school.

  1. Walk inside
  2. Quiet voices
  3. Hands, feet, and objects to yourself
  4. Wait your turn to talk by raising your hand
  5. Follow direction the first time they are given
  6. Be kind to everyone
  7. Share

Students will be learning about our school rules throughout the launch of PBIS-Positive Behavior Intervention Support-more to come on this continuing initiative.

Supplies:

This is a list of supplies.  For the class to use, we would appreciate donations of:

  • 2 boxes of Kleenex
  • 2 packs of pencils
  • 2 package of dry erase markers
  • 2 pump bottles of hand sanitizer
  • Large box of Larger size Ziploc baggies
  • Play dough (4 pack)
  • 2 Clorox wipes (for keeping our school clean!)
  • $5 Donation for book bags

Homework:

I will be sending weekly homework packets home with your child on the first day of the week and they will always be due on the last day of the week.  Homework is meant to be an extra practice for your child.  Please help your child complete it without doing it for him/her.   It is not graded, but is important to complete it so that your child is reinforcing the skills that we already learned.

Illness:

  • If your child is going to be absent please notify the office.(313) 827-1800.
  • If your child is going to miss more than three days please let me know so I can get work together for him/her.

Backpacks:

  • Every child should have a backpack labeled with his or her 1st and last name on the inside.

Folder:

  • I will give your child a black folder.  One side is for papers that you should remove from the folder every day and this side is labeled – Papers to keep at home.  The other side is for papers that need to be completed or signed and returned to school and this side says please complete and return to school.
  • It is very important that you check and empty your child’s folder every day.

Snacks:

  • We eat lunch very early (10:30-11:08) so it is very important that you send a healthy snack for your child everyday!
  • We will have snack in the afternoon around 1 pm.
  • Some good suggestions include: pretzels, crackers, fruit, cheese, a small sandwich, ect…A water bottle labeled with your child’s name is also allowed. Absolutely “no Junk Food”  will be allowed except on special occasions due to the high sugar content…NO cake, donuts, chips, candy, cookies, chocolate, etc. Thanks!

Birthdays:

  • I love celebrating birthdays in my class and if you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school please let me know in advance.  You can send in cupcakes, cookies, donuts, juice, etc…Please no big cakes!  Also, you will need to send in napkins or cups if needed!

Special Classes:

  • Your child will have gym twice a week.  Please make sure that on GYM days your child is wearing clothing and soft-soled sneakers.  If your child does not have appropriate attire he/she will have to sit out.
  • Students’ will get to participate in Gym, Art, Music, Enrichment (Computers), and Library (time to be announced at a later date).

Just a reminder that this year we are starting the year off the first week of school as half days, students will be dismissed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 11:00 am, as this is a district initiative called, “Soft Start.”  Please be aware that on those days there will be individual conferences set up so that we can get to know our students one-on-one.  For scheduling purposes please report back to room 148 on your designated day at your scheduled time.  Students will be scheduled for half an hour on one of the three ½ days in alphabetical order.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.  I am really looking forward to meeting and working with you and your child this year!

Thank you,

Amanda Wentland  ”Your Kindergarten Teacher”

Notes from your Occupational Therapist

1 Thought

Notes from your Occupational Therapist Swimming is usually my TOP recommendation when therapy parents ask me what kinds of activities their kids should do during the summer. Swimming is an AMAZING activity that promotes sensory integration, motor planning, spatial awareness, bilateral coordination, improved core and overall strength, and more.
Play gross motor games.

Some fun games to get the large muscle groups of the body working include building an obstacle course (indoors or outdoors), playing with bean bags and playing games like Twister, Balloon Tennis, Bowling, “Ice Skating” in the Living Room. You canNOT play outside enough! Put away the technology!

Some fun FINE MOTOR ACTIVITIES and games for school-age kids might include painting with a squirt bottle, squirting down a tower of cups, building marshmallow sculptures, or playing with LEGOs. Create pictures with a Lite Brite, or play Connect 4, Uno, Kerplunk, Jenga, Operation, or Mancala. Ziploc bags: encourage using fingertips to press and seal. Put together puzzles as a family. For preschoolers, check out Chutes and Ladders , Hi Ho! Cherry-O, Ants in the pants, or Crocodile Dentist. Use tongs, tweezers, or strawberry hullers to pick up small objects for sorting, such as beads, marbles, beans, pompoms and cotton balls.

Outdoor parks are the perfect place to build gross motor skills, fine motor skills, visual skills, sensory processing skills, and even social skills! Kids who crave proprioceptive input and need lots of “heavy work” can work their bilateral coordination, hand strength, and core muscles as they climb ladders and

cargo nets and play on the monkey bars. Or they can get lots of good vestibular input as they slide, swing, and spin.

Try different summer recipes with your kids and involve them in the process.

Being involved in the food preparation process is not only fun for kids, it can actually be therapeutic for those who are picky eaters

Encourage independence with self-help skills!

Are you no longer rushing out the door to get your kid(s) to school?

Great!

Now is the perfect time to take a little longer in the mornings and encourage your child to do more of their self-help tasks on their own.

  • Putting on shoes or sandals
  • Tying their shoes, buttoning, snapping
  • Dressing and Undressing
  • Brushing their hair
  • Brushing teeth
  • Making their own bowl of cereal, sandwich, etc.
  • Age appropriate household chores

Cook up some homemade play dough and spend some time playing playdough with your child. This is my favorite recipe… https://www.the36thavenue.com/kool-aid-playdough-recipe/

Experiment with making different types of slime, including sand slime. Make some rainbow spaghetti. Create soft cloud dough using only two ingredients.

Learn how to make your own bubble solution and make GIANT bubbles.

Mile High Bubbles
2 cups warm water
1/3 cup dish soap
1/4 cup corn syrup

Try making different types of homemade paints. Experiment with glowing sensory play. Contain your messy play in a sensory table, large bin, or on a large towel or dollar store shower curtain. There are so many recipes for these things online!

Encourage lots of cutting with scissors this summer!

Wonderful

Summer!

Planting

Dear Parents:

Lowrey Elementary students will be planting flowers to beautify our building on Thursday, May 31, 2018.

We are asking parents to donate/bring in flats of flowers on Tuesday, May 29 and Wednesday, May 30, 2018.  Please drop them off to your child’s classroom teacher on either of those days.

If you have any small gardening tools your child can use, please send those with your child on May 31 and make sure they are labeled with your child’s name.  It will make it easier to return them to you.

Thank you for your help!  Go Polar Bears!
