Welcome to Kindergarten!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Kindergarten!  My name is Miss Wentland.  I will be your child’s Kindergarten teacher this year. I will be working to ensure that your child will have an exciting, positive learning experience and will successfully finish the Kindergarten program.  I am looking forward to working with your child this year.

Contact information:    Miss Amanda Wentland

You can contact me by phone, email, or in person

  • My email address is wentlaa@dearbornschools.org.  I check it daily and will respond promptly.
  • My phone number is 313-827-1800.  This number will send your call to my voicemail and you will need to leave a message.  I will call you back as soon as possible.
  • Sign up on my blog https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/wentlaa/
  • I feel it is important that we communicate often, but in order for me to give you my full attention I can’t be watching the students while talking to you.  If you need to talk to me about your child please wait until all the children have gone home for the day, or let me know and we can set up an appointment before ot after school or during one of your child’s prep classes.

Arrival /Dismissal:

  • Children need to be lined up by 8:00 a.m.  Class begins at 8:05 a.m.  If your child is late you must first report to the office to sign in your child.
  • The children will be dismissed at 3:00 p.m. from door #3.  It is very important that you pick your child up on time.  They get very worried when parents are late.  Once you pick up your Kindergartener you must wait outside for older siblings.  Please do not wait in the hallways for your child.
  • Also, please let me know if your child will be picked up by someone other than you.  If for some reason you need to pick your child up early you must first go to the office to sign him/her and the office will notify me.  Please do not come to the classroom.
  • All children that are bused will ride their regular bus and be dropped off at their regular stop unless you notify the school in the form of a note or phone call.

Classroom Rules:

I expect the children to be respectful and kind to everyone in the classroom and school! Please review these rules your child at home and I will do the same at school.

  1. Walking feet indoors
  2. Quiet soft voices
  3. Hands, feet, and objects to yourself
  4. Wait your turn to talk by raising your hand
  5. Follow directions the first time they are given
  6. Be kind to everyone
  7. Share

Students will be learning about our school rules throughout the PBIS-Positive Behavior Intervention Support plan.

 Supplies:

  • $8 for our in class reading take home reading bag and classroom plastic folder. Your child will take this home at the end of the year!
  • Set of headphones in a large zip lock bag with first and last name on it. These will be used for computers and listening centers in the room.

This is a list of suggested supplies. For the class to use, we would appreciate donations of these items. Please pick 3 from the list below to donate. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BUY EVERYTHING J Bolded items we really need for the entire school year!!!

  • 1 Box of thin markers
  • 1 pack of glue sticks
  • 2 Kleenex/Tissue boxes
  • 2 packs of pencils (sharpened PLEASE)
  • 1 pack of regular markers
  • 1 pack of dry erase markers
  • 1 pump soap or hand sanitizer
  • Large OR small zip lock bags
  • Play dough (4 pack)
  • Clorox wipes (for keeping our school clean!)

Homework:

I will be sending weekly homework packets home with your child on Monday and expect it returned on Friday.  Please make sure to check your child’s backpack daily and empty out old papers that have already been finished. Homework is meant to be an extra practice for your child.  Please help your child complete it without doing it for him/her.  You may assist your child if he/she needs help.  It is NOT independent work to be done alone and it is reinforcing the skills that we already learned in the classroom.

READING: Students will be bringing home reading bags with materials they need to strengthen at their level. Reading bags should be a daily part of the homework. Read the contents every night, even if it is a re-read. Developing an appreciation and a read for pleasure attitude at this age is vital to reaching your child’s maximum potential.

Illness:

  • If your child is going to be absent please notify the office by phone.
  • If your child has a fever they must be fever FREE for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • If your child is not feeling well, has vomited, has a fever, please keep them at home to help reduce the spread of illnesses in the classroom!

Backpacks:

  • Every child should have a backpack labeled with his or her first and last name on the inside.  Please check the backpacks (and folders) daily to empty out old paper and school work/letters.

Snacks:

  • We eat lunch very early (10:30-11:08) so it is very important that you send a healthy snack for your child every day!
  • We will have snack in the afternoon.
  • Some good suggestions include: fruit and veggies, crackers, pretzels, etc. NO cookies, candy, or any junk food will be allowed during snack.
  • WATER bottles are allowed but also well as juice will be allowed in the class-No Pop please!!!

Birthdays:

  • If you would like to bring in a treat for your child’s birthday, you may drop off cupcakes and juice in the office in the morning. DO NOT bring balloons, please!!!

Special Classes:

  • Your child will have gym twice a week. Please make sure that on those days, your child is wearing gym shoes.
  • Students will get to participate in Gym, Art, Music, Enrichment (computers), and Library Check-out

This year we will begin week with half days and dismiss students at 11:00 am. During this week, we will set up an individual time with each child in the afternoon for beginning of the year assessments- please bring you and your child back to their respective classrooms for testing.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.  I am really looking forward to meeting and working with you and your child this year!

Thank you,

Miss Amanda Wentland “Your Kindergarten Teacher”

Dearborn SHINES Program- Parent Survey

Hello All,

It is bittersweet to say that our Dearborn SHINES program has come to an end! It was a great privilege working with all of you and I look forward to any future encounters that we may have with one another.

We need one last thing before our time together ends. Our grant for the Dearborn SHINES program has a survey that we need parents to complete. I know most schools have the Class Dojo app; if we can have the surveys sent to all parents through the app it would be highly appreciated. For any schools that communicate with parents differently, please let me know how we can ensure parents are receiving the survey link and how I can help!

The link to the survey is below. Also, an Arabic version is being completed for parents that do not read English. If you have any questions please do no hesitate to contact me.

Best Regards,

Latefa Hamid
