PINK OUT on THURSDAY $1

Dear Parent(s)-

Pink-Out is this Thursday.  Students are encouraged to pay $1.00 and wear pink.  If they do BOTH, they are invited to the gym at 1:15.  The Pink- Out is to show support to ANYONE who has battled, is battling or knows someone who is battling cancer.  All of the proceeds will be donated to children in Michigan who are currently fighting this disease.  We are pleading with everyone to encourage their students and hold them accountable for bringing a minimum of $1.00.  Our goal is to collect $1200 (Elem & MS) combined.  We will have several more of these days through-out the year for different causes, to both, support the cause and build school culture.

Thanks you,

Kindergarten Team

You are never too young to learn, and Dearborn Public Schools knows parents are every child’s first teachers. Parents who live in the district and have children ages 6 months to 4 years are invited to attend free Parent University courses. The fall classes begin Oct. 18. “This program is interactive for parents and children. It gives parents easy, practical and inexpensive ideas to help foster child development and to strengthen the parent/child bond,” said Cotter Principal Amy Modica, who oversees Parent University. The fall classes will be offered on Fridays from 9 to 10 a.m. at Nowlin, Maples, McDonald, River Oaks, Salina, and William Ford elementary schools. No registration is required. For more information, call (313) 827-6150. The program runs through Nov. 22. Parent University provides parents with classes in different developmental areas to help the adults best meet the needs of their young children. Class topics include: nutrition and health, dental care, social emotional growth, screen time and technology, math, literacy, music and movement, and science. During classes, parents will participate in hands on activities with their child, hear from professionals in these areas, and receive free materials to continue learning through play at home. Parents also receive free books they can read to their child. Classes will be offered again this school year from Feb. 28 to April 3. Those sessions will be held at Lindbergh, Maples, Nowlin, River Oaks, Salina and William Ford elementary schools.

From the desk of the Kindergarten Teachers

When it comes to excellence, Kindergarten teachers’ believe it can be best defined in the results. True excellence will be seen in motivated, engaged children with empowering memories of learning to read and write and the stamina for independent acts of literacy. These are the children who meet high Common Core Standards in literacy and beyond.

Excellence in kindergarten literacy is the vital foundation for bridging the achievement gap and building schools of ambitious, self-regulated readers and writers.  Experiences in the educational arts engage children’s multiple ways of learning while promoting creative and higher-order thinking; they take advantage of how the young child’s brain learns best. Developing social-emotional intelligence supports children in being successful in school . . . and in life. Yes, we are preparing our children for the 21st century!!!

Writing is the key that unlocks the alphabetic code.  So, collaboratively the Kindergarten teachers’ definition of excellence includes cooperative learning, rich experiences in the arts, science exploration, respectful and supportive parent connections, a language-intensive “writing-to-read” environment, systematic phonemic awareness through songs, and an explicit multisensory ABC and phonics immersion program within a comprehensive literacy framework.  So please continue to work with your child on their new literacy work at home through reading their mini-books and reading to them each and every day!!!
