Cooking Fun

Today we will have a little bit of fun cooking in the kitchen. We will make some play dough. The play dough can be used to form the letters of the alphabet or numbers. Then use the letters to make your sight words or spelling word. Practice making math equations. Ready to “cook”!

You will need:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup table salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 cup boiling water (adults should do this part)
  • food coloring of you choice

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Mix well.
  2. Add the oil
  3. Mix a few drops of food coloring into the boiling water (adults please do this part) and then add to the bowl.
  4. Mix everything very well and massage with your hand until it is no longer sticky.
  5. Once it has fully cooled, wrap in plastic and put in an airtight container. Store at room temperature for about 6 months.

Stay safe and I miss all of you!

Great Reading Game

After you are done reading the stories with your family, you can play a fun game. Get one dice, roll and then ask a question that goes with the number you rolled. See if you can answer without looking back in the book.

Roll 1 “What is the story mostly about?”

Roll 2 “Who are the main characters?”

Roll 3 “Where does the story take place?”

Roll 4 “When does the story take place?”

Roll 5 “What happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story?”

Roll 6 “What questions do you have about the story?”

Take turns playing the game with your family. Then read another book! Keep on reading and practicing your math. Hope to see you all real soon.

Activities to do during the closure

Week 1

Set up a daily routine that will help to keep things normal. Get up at a reasonable time and get dressed.

Sit down and read to your child or have your child read to you for 20 minutes.

You can practice addition and subtraction skills with flashcards.

Have your child keep a daily journal of their activities and feelings during this uncharted time off.

Playing video games should still be limited in time and day.

Summer is Here

June 14, 2019

Dearest Miller Families,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits as we conclude a great academic year at Miller Elementary. Miller administration, staff and students thank you for the sustained support in maintaining a vibrant learning community where children remain the priority. Our efforts have strengthened our neighborhood and promoted a safe, nurturing healthy environment for students to live, learn and grow. Help your child avoid summer learning loss by ensuring they practice reading, writing and mathematics daily! Summer is a wonderful time to reflect and relax, at the same time structuring a regular time for daily reading and math practice will help students maintain the academic gains made throughout the school year and eliminate summer learning loss. Children require parent’s friendship, wisdom, guidance and support throughout the summer, now is not the time to stop learning. Create quality family time by visiting the zoo, Detroit Science Center, Belle Isle Aquarium and Conservatory, Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village etc. We are living in uncertain times requiring children project courage and self-confidence by using and applying their knowledge. Miller Elementary staff continue working diligently over the summer months to expand existing school improvement initiatives and opportunities in preparation for the 2019-2020 school year, we need your help.
Teachers have created personalized summer learning plan for each student on i-Ready and Zearn platforms. It is imperative all students practice reading and math daily as reading and math minutes will be closely monitored. Students have been directed to practice reading and math twenty minutes daily using i-Ready and Zearn applications. All Miller students are well versed with accessing both i-Ready and Zearn online, additionally all third through fifth grade students have Ready Common Core books to practice reading and writing and all k-5 students have Eureka Math Module workbooks they may complete over the summer. Students absent technology at home may access technology at the Dearborn Centennial Library. Student supply list will be posted on the school website by grade, enabling families to seize the great deals on school supplies over the summer. Next year’s class lists will be posted 1 week prior to the start of the 2019 – 2020 school year. Included is an updated 2019-2020 school calendar.
Wherever you are and whatever you are doing enjoy a safe, relaxing and restful summer vacation. Looking forward to a wonderful 2019 – 2020 school year!

Fundraiser for Yemen Children

Dear Miller Families,

Hoping this letter finds you and loved ones well and in good spirits!

The Miller Community gives thanks to all contributing during our Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive, together we donated 2,383 food items to needy Dearborn families. Super job Miller Community for making a difference and helping those unable to help themselves, this is who we are and what we are all about, God Bless.

A continued conflict in Yemen has created one of the world’s largest and most complex humanitarian crises. Almost 80 per cent of the population (22.2 million people) is in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Conflict has led to the internal displacement of 2 million people, left over 1 million public sector workers without pay for two years, and undermined access to ports and airports, obstructing essential humanitarian and commercial deliveries. Growing food insecurity, poor water and sanitation, and the spread of preventable diseases threaten millions more. The caseload of outbreaks of Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD)/cholera has reached over one million. The strain on an already weakened health system has been further compounded by the diphtheria outbreak in early 2018, with over 2,200 cases, so far. In addition, 16 million people lack access to safe water. Children are the primary victims: more than 6,000 have been verified as killed or maimed since the conflict began. Almost 394,000 children under 5 currently suffer from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and require treatment, with millions more in jeopardy. The damage and closure of schools and health facilities threaten children’s access to education and health services making them vulnerable to psychosocial distress.

In hopes of making a difference and teaching Miller students the concept of community service and giving back, Miller PTA, Staff and Students are teaming up and committed to raising funds for, “The Children of Yemen.” At the end of the fundraising campaign all monies will be donated to an NGO non-governmental organization, a non-profit, voluntary citizens’ group which is organized on a local, national or international level and earmarked specifically for the Children of Yemen.

Monetary donations being accepted in the Office, please make checks payable to Miller PTA, Service Squad will be fundraising during lunch and after school.

God Bless you and family for making a difference one child at a time.

Regards,

Miller Family
