Holiday Party and Gift Exchange…

With me being out sick last week, we are behind in party planning, but I have confidence we can pull it together by Thursday!  Our party will be in the afternoon on Thursday starting around 1:15 and end when the students go to Art at 2:30.  We will do a craft, eat snacks, and exchange gifts (books).

For Thursday, each student should bring in a NEW, wrapped book to exchange with the rest of the class.  Chapter books are very popular, but it can be anything that is around a 2nd grade reading and interest level.  I am sure if you let your child pick it out, they know what their classmates like to read.  Students will not get to choose who they give their book to, we will play a game that allows each child a chance to choose a gift from the table.

SNACKS:  If you are able to send in a snack to share with the class for Thursday, please comment on this post so I can start a list of who/what we will have.  Some ideas are:  fruit, cheese/crackers, sugar cookies, carrots/hummus, juice boxes/water, etc… We will also need plates and sandwich size ziploc baggies.

If you have any questions, please send me an email 🙂  THANKS!!!

Classroom News…

  • OOPS!  We spent so much time today making glittery snowflakes and writing poems about them, that I forgot to give the spelling test.  The test will be on Monday.  I know many students left their spelling notebooks at school, so in case they need to study some more, the words for were:  play, black, clown, glen, plot, blob, plop, plant, glass, cup

  • Santa shop is coming!  Our class will be going shopping on Wednesday morning.  All items are $2.00 each.  There was a note in the homework folder today that explains in more detail.  Please include a list of the people your child is buying for with their money.

  • Thank you for the canned food donations!  We collected 100 cans 🙂

  • In social studies we are talking about landforms and bodies of water (natural characteristics).  If you have a picture of your child or family visiting one of these, please send it in.  We would love to see pictures of you climbing a mountain, fishing in a lake, tubing down a river, swimming in an ocean, relaxing on an island beach, running down a sand dune, etc…

Food Drive

This week only we are collecting canned goods to donate to families who need it.  Our classroom goal was 3 cans per student (and me!).  If you are able to help us with our goal, please allow your child to bring in a few cans to donate.  Thank You to everyone who has already sent theirs in 🙂

Action packed…

We decorated cookies for our PBiS reward, made our own butter and corn muffins, and enjoyed a small Thanksgiving feast…somehow we even squeezed in Daily 5 and Math Workshop!!  Tremendous thank-yous to Mrs. Elsersey and Mrs. Chehimi for joining us this afternoon and to everyone who donated items – you are AWESOME!

In the News…

Just a few notes…

1.  Next Tuesday afternoon, we will be enjoying a small Thanksgiving feast together.  The plan is to make cornbread muffins in the morning and then shake, shake, shake some whipping cream into butter to go along with them.  We will pair that with a few other simple ‘feast’ items, but we need your help.  Below is a list of items that we need to have our feast on Tuesday.  If you can help by sending in an item below, please comment on this post so I can plan accordingly.

The items we need are:

  • 2 boxes of Jiffy Corn Muffin mix
  • 2 pints of heavy whipping cream
  • 21 apples (maybe split this between a few people?)
  • 2 containers of caramel dip
  • popcorn (already popped please!)

The students will go to lunch like every other day.  This is an afternoon snack 🙂

2.   There will be no spelling words or new books for reading groups next week.

3.  THANK YOU to all of you for making conferences go so smoothly!  I am so lucky to have a classroom full of wonderful, hard working students with such supportive parents behind them 🙂

It was research…

Today we started talking about, and working on, informational writing.  We had a great group discussion on what that means and brainstormed ideas on what types of things counted as informational.  While we discussed writing a “how-to”, somebody mentioned (it might have been me :))  that we can only write about things we actually know how to do or have done ourselves.  I asked them about writing ” how-to make hot chocolate”, and there were a few students who have never made it before, so, before we could write about it…WE HAD TO MAKE OUR OWN 🙂

Here are a few pictures from our research 😉
