I sent home some information about 100’s Day (Monday, March 3) in the folder today.  Please let me know if you have any concerns or questions.

Friday is hat day.  Students can pay $1 to wear a hat to school.

MARCH IS READING MONTH!  Keep an eye out for a letter and calendar about events for the month.

The word of the day today was EMPATHY – ask about it over dinner 🙂

Spelling words:  Since we didn’t do spelling the week before break, I am combining the district words for the last 2 weeks.  Each student is bringing home the same 10 words.  I asked them to complete 3 activities for homework this week in their red notebook.  A few of them have asked for some different ideas to do with their spelling words, so I will gather some new ideas and post them on the spelling page within the next few days.

Donation: We have an activity coming up on Wednesday that requires those brown lunch bags (or white is okay too).  If anyone is willing and able to send a package of those in, that would be extremely helpful.

Here are a few pics of the students playing “Scoot” today during math.

The week of 2/10:

  • We took our spelling test today.  There will be no new spelling words this week.
  • January PBIS reward is a game day.  We will spend about an hour on Wednesday afternoon playing our board games.  Students are more than welcome to bring in a game to play with friends.  Everyone gets to participate in this reward.  No electronics, please.
  • Friday 2/14:  Happy Valentine’s Day 🙂  We will start our craft around 2:00ish and then enjoy our snacks and pass out valentine cards.  If your child is passing out cards, please make sure they have one for each student in our class – if you need another list of names, just let me know.
  • hard to believe….2/17-21 is WINTER BREAK…

This Week in the News…

Happy Monday 🙂  I am VERY much looking forward to an actual full week of school so we can get back into our groove!!!

Report cards came home today!!!!  Please check your child’s home folder – it is on yellow paper.

TOMORROW – is class color day.  Our class voted to wear BLUE.

Book It – I sent the February calendar home today, but it looks different than the previous ones.  This month instead of counting days, we will be counting minutes.  So every day your child reads, please write in the number of minutes they read.  I did an example on the calendar.  You DO NOT have to sign the calendar every day, but please try to sign at the end of every week where they total up the minutes.  To earn their free pizza certificate, we are looking for a total of 400 minutes for the whole month.  Before you send it back in at the end of the month, please add up your child’s minutes for the whole month and write it on the calendar.

Don’t forget to send back January calendars.  They need 21 days colored to earn their free pizza certificate.

Spelling –  For some reason there were 6 pattern words this week (back, duck, pick, dock, deck, lack), so your child only chose 4 words of their own.

I thought they did an EXCELLENT job last Friday doing our spelling test the new way 🙂

Valentine’s Day – I know it is still 11 days away, but Yasmeen was talking about going shopping tonight to buy her cards, lol, so just in case anybody else wanted to get a head start on Valentine cards I sent home a class list of our students on green paper.  If your child is planning to pass out cards, I let them know that they must have one for every student in our room – so they can use the list to address their cards.

We will have a very low key celebration on Valentine’s Day.  I am still recovering from Birthday Bash 😉  We are planning a craft (with our left over money), a snack, and on passing out cards.  I will also be looking for a few families to send in cookies or juice – but that can wait until it gets closer.

January PBiS reward – EVERY student in our classroom has earned the January behavior reward.  That means that nobody flipped their card to yellow more than 5 times this month.  This is actually the 4th month (out of 5)  that everybody has gotten to be a part of the behavior celebration – we are just that awesome 🙂

Here are some pics of the Mad Science assembly we enjoyed this morning:

Friday 1/31 and beyond…

Tomorrow is pajama day, crazy hair day, and birthday bash!  If you have not sent in your $5, please do so tomorrow morning so we can pay for the pizza, cupcakes, and ice cream.  I still need money from 11 students!!

Tomorrow is also our spelling test!!!!!

Report cards will come home on Monday.

Since we missed a few spirit days this week, we will make them up next week.  Monday, February 3rd will be hippie day and Tuesday, February 4th will be class color day (that is BLUE for us).

Reading…

I am realizing when students come to me in reading group that many of them have only read their book once.  Especially for students with shorter books it is a MUST that they go back and read their book over.  In the classroom we discuss that rereading a book helps with comprehension and fluency.  Today I sat down with a group and asked each of them how many times they read their book – every student answered “one time” except for one student who said “four”…when I started asking questions about the story only one student could answer my questions correctly – guess who?  I realize as adults we are easily tired of hearing the same story over and over, but it will help your child become a better reader.  The 1st time through the story you can focus on making sure they are reading all the words correctly.  The 2nd time through the story you can discuss what is happening, who the characters are, what is the main idea, which parts are most important, etc…  The 3rd time through the story really listen to your child as they read – are they stopping at periods?  Is there expression in their voice?  Does it sound smooth?

Students with long chapter books are often reading silently and independently at home, I’m sure.  However, once they have read a chapter (or a couple) to themselves, have them come to you and REREAD their favorite couple of pages or a part where they were confused.  Doing this 3 or 4 times during a chapter book will help you see their strengths and where they need help the most.

I know you are working hard at home and I am very thankful for each and every thing you do 🙂
