Concert and book fair

Tomorrow is our music concert. We will preform at 2:00 and at 7:00.  Parents are welcome to attend the 2:00 show – keep in mind that the gym will be packed with all the k-5 classrooms as well at that show.  For the evening concert you can drop your child off to me in the classroom at 6:45.  I will bring them back to the room and we will play games there until you come to pick them up after the entire concert ends.

We will visit the book fair tomorrow at 11:30 to purchase books.  The book fair will also be open in the evening before/after the concert if you would prefer to buy books then!

Happy Friday :)

  • GLUE STICKS…If you are out shopping this weekend and can grab us a few glue sticks, we would greatly appreciate it!
  • We will visit the book fair on Monday to preview the books and then again on Thursday to buy our books.
  • OUR MUSIC CONCERT is Thursday, March 20th.  We will preform at 2:00 for the school and then again at 7:00 p.m.  Today we had a rehearsal and we sounded great (of course)!!
  • Silly Sock Day is Wednesday.
  • Flashlight Friday is on the 21st.  Students can bring in a flashlight and we will turn off all the lights to read.
  • In Social Studies we are learning about the different characteristics of our community.  We spent some time making posters to illustrate characteristics like transportation, places to play, buildings, natural features, and diversity.  Next week, we will focus on the ‘government’ and how they play a role in our community.
  • THANK YOU to Mrs. Elgabri for being our guest reader today 🙂
  • A few pictures of us this week:                           photo 1 (29) photo 3 (25) photo 1 (28) photo 2 (32) photo 2 (31) photo 3 (26) photo 4 (19)

Classroom News…

  • Tomorrow is late start!  Students will start their day at 9:30.
  • We have a music concert coming up next week.  Your 2nd grade students will preform at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 20th.
  • The book fair is also next week.  We visit the book fair on Monday to look at what they have and then return on Thursday to do our buying.
  • HELP!  We are down to our last two glue sticks.  If anyone is willing and able to donate some, we would be very grateful!!
  • SNACK…we eat snack every morning around 10:15ish.  I am noticing that many students do not have a snack, but are hungry at that time.  When I have leftovers from parties or other activities, I gladly share those with students who need a snack, but that is not very often.  If you are able to send a snack in for your child, please try to do that.  Snacks should not be junk food.  Fruit, yogurt, cheese sticks, carrots, crackers, and granola bars are some ideas for snacks.
  • This was a pretty busy Tuesday.  We had some students from Dearborn High School visit us to talk about bullying, we worked with our kindergarten buddies, and in Math we started a new unit on fractions.   A few pictures:                                                                                                                                                photo 2 (29) photo 4 (17) photo 5 (11) photo 2 (30) photo 3 (21) photo 2 (28) photo 3 (23) photo 1 (26) photo 4 (18) photo 3 (24) photo 4 (14) photo 3 (20) photo 4 (15) photo 5 (10) photo 2 (26)  photo 2 (27) photo 3 (22)  photo 1 (25)

  • Reading minutes are due tomorrow.  The form was part of the packet that came home last Friday, but if you don’t have it, you can just use a piece of paper and write the student’s name, the number of minutes they read, and then sign it.  The goal for the week was 120 minutes, but even if your child didn’t reach that, I need the form back telling me how many minutes they did read.
  • Spelling test tomorrow and spelling notebooks will be checked to make sure everyone completed their weekly activities.
  • Science Quizzes are checked and graded.  Look for those in tomorrow’s folder 🙂
  • Between spring pictures, an assembly, and language testing by Mrs. Mosallam, our day was pretty packed.  One of our reading groups got the night off because I just didn’t get to see them today, but everybody did bring home math homework.
  • I was trying to take pictures of our class at the assembly, because they were all totally CRACKING UP during the whole thing…

  • Spring pictures are tomorrow.
  • Tomorrow is also “keep a wild, but true, animal fact in your pocket” day.  Students may find a fact at home tonight and bring it with them tomorrow, or I told them that they could find their animal fact during bellwork in the morning using a book from the classroom.
  • We went over the science homework today to clear up any confusion.  Students need to remember 4 things for the quiz:
  1. Sources of water – examples:  wells, lakes, ponds, oceans, underground, rivers, spring
  2. Uses of water – examples:  washing hands, cooking, watering plants, drinking, swimming
  3. Properties of water as a solid – examples:  cold, slippery, smooth, cloudy, keeps shape
  4. Properties of water as a liquid – examples:  changes shape, regular temperature, no smell, wet, clear

  • The Science review came home today.  The quiz will be on Thursday.
  • Spring Picture day is also this Thursday.
  • Yay Us!!!  Today we earned our 50th compliment point and will be brainstorming ideas for a way to treat ourselves.
  • We extended our recognition of the 100th day of school yesterday when our Kindergarten buddies visited today.   Tapping these balloons back and forth 100 times is not as easy as it sounds – but it sure was fun 🙂

Monday 3/3

  •  If you are looking for the Science review, it DID NOT come home today.  We got so into our 100’s day and Reading Month activities that we just did not have time to complete it together.
  • THANK YOU for sending in snacks to make gorp and for supporting your child with their poster!!!!  We were a big success today 🙂
  • Spelling words will be posted to the spelling page.  I can only post the 5 district words that every student has.  The other 5 words your child has are unique to them.
  • I had a question this morning about the Reading Month calendar.  It looks like on every Tuesday there is an activity to complete.  These are only suggestions – none of the Tuesday activities on the calendar need to be turned in to school.
  • We kicked off March is Reading Month today with the song “Gotta Keep Reading”.  We will keep practicing and put motions to the song also, I hope.

Just a few pictures:

  • posters and snacks tomorrow
  • February reading minutes can be turned in at any point this week for the pizza certificate
  • March is Reading Month goal is 120 minutes per week for each student.  The big difference this month is that students have to turn their minutes in EVERY FRIDAY for the week, instead of just at the end of the month.  The tickets to turn in every week were part of the packet sent home on Friday.
  • A few activities may be added during the month just to give it some ‘zing’ 🙂  These may be things like crazy sock day, a read in day where kids can bring a blanket or stuffed animal, learning a pretty cool song to perform for you, and/or, hopefully, our Guest Readers!!!
  • Tomorrow we will do a review in Science.  I expect our test to be either Wednesday or Thursday.  The review will come home so you can go over it with your child.

  • Tomorrow is hat day.  Students can pay $1 to wear a hat.  The money will be donated towards items for the PBiS store.
  • March is reading month information is coming home tomorrow.
  • 100’s day projects are due Monday.  Whatever they are choosing to create, remind them that they need to organize their items into equal groups or an array.   For example, one student wanted to create a gumball machine and use round colored stickers for 100 gumballs.  This is a great idea, just make sure the gumballs are grouped in some way (color?  size?).  Another student wanted to make a poster with 100 pieces of popcorn – great idea – maybe make some popcorn spilling out of the box in 4 groups of 20 with 20 pieces still in the box?  Send me a message if you have any questions or concerns.
  • 100’s day “gorp”…please try to send in a bag of one of the suggested items
  • A big THANKS to Saad’s mom and Adam’s mom for helping out by providing brown lunch bags for our project yesterday 🙂
  • In SCIENCE today we were comparing ice and water – it was pretty exciting 🙂  Here are a few pics:
