Brookies :)

Before I forget…

  • Week 2 reading minutes start today and are due next Friday.
  • I have an invitation that I intended to send home today and yet here it sits…still on my desk…oops.  I wanted you to have the weekend to think about it and find times that work for you, so I am posting it here, but I will still send it home on Monday 🙂  Parent Invite

Now, the big question…  How many pictures can 1 teacher take while 3 groups of kids are making brownie batter and the other 3 groups of kids are making chocolate chip cookie dough????  The answer… A LOT!!  (This isn’t even all of them ;))

Football is…

This is where my nephews would say, “Ball is life, Aunt Laura!”  Well, in this case, football is…second to reading!!!! 😉  That was the message of our visitors today from the DHS football team.  Sam and Laith from the Pioneer football team read us a story and then talked to us about the importance of being a student athlete – school first, then sports!  The boys were super!

Lots of reminders for tomorrow:

  • READING MINUTES from week 1 are due!  Please remember to add up the minutes and sign the bottom.  Every child who reaches the goal of 120 minutes this week will have their name entered into the drawing for lunch with Mrs. Burch.
  • Red spelling notebooks are due and we will take our spelling test.
  • Library books need to be returned.
  • Math test – the study guide was posted on Monday, but here it is again if you need it. Unit 7 math study guide
  • We will finish spirit week off tomorrow with sports day.  Students can dress up in a sports uniform, a professional team’s gear, or anything else that shows sports.
  • Last, but not least, we are making our ‘brookies’!!

I am exhausted just thinking about it 🙂

Tomorrow (and beyond…)

  • Please make sure that you or your child are filling in the number of minutes they read each night on Week 1 of their March is Reading Month slip.  They have 4 nights (last night, tonight, Wednesday night, and Thursday night) to reach their goal of 120 minutes.  Reading slips are due on Friday.
  • Spirit week continues with “around the world” day for Wednesday.  It can be as simple as a t-shirt or hat from a place you have visited, or you can wear an outfit that represents a different state, country, or culture.  We had some awesome book characters in our classroom today!  I keep forgetting to take pictures…sorry :/
  • There is math homework tonight and the test for unit 7 is on Friday.  If you haven’t seen the study guide, please look back at yesterday’s post.
  • Everyone brought home a wish list from the book fair today.  We will return on Thursday to make our purchases.
  • WE DID IT AGAIN!!  We have earned a full pan of brownie points for the second time this year!  That means we get to make “brookies” (brownie with a chocolate chip cookie in the middle).  My plan is to make them first thing on Friday morning…if you are looking for something to do on Friday, we could always use one parent helper 🙂

Updates

  • Tomorrow is “dress like a book character” 🙂
  • It’s hard to believe, but we will be ready for the next math test on Friday.  Here is the study guide:  Unit 7 math study guide
  • New spelling words came home today – no individual words this week!  We worked on writing them 5 times each at school.  They should complete 3 more activities at home and return them on Friday.
  • I was totally confident that we were scheduled to visit the book fair today and surprise!…I was wrong 😉  We visit tomorrow to make our wish lists and we really do go back on Thursday to make our purchases!!
  • Spring pictures have been rescheduled for the 15th.

Tomorrow!!

Spirit week begins tomorrow!!  No need to pick out an outfit – Monday is pajamas and crazy hair 🙂

We will take our spelling test tomorrow and red spelling notebooks are due.

It is not normal for me to send homework home on Fridays, but there was a math page that some students did not finish during class so they should have brought it home to finish.  Please double check their folder to make sure they remember to complete it.

The book fair is this week, too.  Please do not send in money for the book fair yet…when we visit on Monday it is just to look and make a wish list.  We go back on Thursday to buy.

February reading calendars can be sent in tomorrow.  Even though tomorrow is technically still February, your child should begin keeping track of how many minutes they read for our March is Reading Month weekly slips.  This week is really only 4 nights – the slips for week 1 should come back on Friday – so they need to read 30 minutes a night this week to make their goal of 120 minutes.  They CAN do it!!  Remember they can split the minutes up if they want to…maybe 15 minutes before dinner and then 15 minutes before bed???

There were some adjustments made to the lunch menu for this week:

Monday, 02/29,   Bosco Sticks

Tuesday, 03/01,   hummus and pita bread

Wednesday, 03/02,   Galaxy Pizza

Thursday, 03/03,   fish patty on a bun
Friday, 03/04,   bean & cheese burrito

Second choice all week will be a cheese pocket pizza.

Updates…

  • We got our new spelling words today.  Our test will be on Monday.  Red notebooks are due on Monday also.
  • Math homework came home today!  The very last problem is subtraction and they cannot use the traditional method for it because it requires borrowing and we haven’t practiced that enough.  Soooo, they need to use a different strategy.  I posted this a while ago, just so you could see the other options, but I figured I would repost today – just in case they need help with that last problem.  subtraction strategies
  • March is Reading Month is coming up!!  Instead of our normal reading calendar, students will be asked to write the minutes they read every day.  This will start on Monday even though it is technically still February.  So, Sunday can be your last day with our February reading calendar.  You can send those in on Monday for the pizza certificates.  More information for March will come home at the end of this week.
  • Fundraiser information came home in today’s folder.
  • Picture day is Thursday.  There is an order envelope in today’s folder.
  • Tomorrow is the last day to send in any box tops you have collected.
  • The first meeting for Run Club will be Thursday, February 25th from 3:45-4:30.
  • Spirit week is next week!!!  Here is a look at what each day will be:  Spirit week
  • The book fair is coming 🙂  We will visit on Monday to preview the items and create our wish list.  Then, we will go back on Thursday to make our purchases.

100’s day rules!!

We were VERY busy with the 100th day of school today!  (So busy, in fact, that I forgot to give them their spelling words…oops!)  We read a 100th day poem, made a 100 second rainstorm, played ‘race to 100’, had a 100 second staredown, wrote about life as a 100 year old (after checking out a photo of ourselves as a 100 year old), raced to see how many times they could write their name in 100 seconds, made 100th day glasses…in science we made predictions about 100 drops of water, 100 jumps, 100 steps, and tried to stack 100 pennies.  All that, AND we each presented our poster and ate our 100th day snack.  Whew!!

(Before I forget, if you have any boxtops, can you please send them in by Wednesday…)

A few shots of our very busy day 🙂

Happy Friday :)

From the sound of the conversations going on in our room, I can tell that everyone is excited about making their 100 day posters this weekend.  I can’t wait to see them all in person on Monday!!

Just a few notes about things coming up…

  • The first day of running club has been moved to Thursday, February 25th from 3:45-4:30
  • PTA is sending home a fundraiser next week full of MI made products
  • Spirit week is coming the week of Feb. 29th-March 4th.  The days will be…PJ/crazy hair on Monday, dress like a book character on Tuesday, ‘around the world’ on Wednesday (wear a shirt or outfit that is from a different state or country), rainbow day on Thursday (wear bright colors), and sports/team day on Friday.  It should be super fun!

I snapped a few shots of us in action today 🙂
