In Language Arts today the students took their vocabulary test.  I will have grades updated by the end of the day today.  Remember, the marking period ends next Friday which means all late work will be due this Friday.

During class time, we spent time reviewing lexile ranges and CAFE strategies in order to help students select good fit books. Then, we went to the library.  The students also reviewed the comma rules by applying them to practice sentences.  Lastly, the students were introduced to the last story element we will be learning about this year, characterization.

In Language Arts today the students continued to practice identifying theme with the short story, “Ant and Grasshopper”. The students also discussed the genre of the story as well as any figurative language that may have been used.

Additionally, the students reviewed the last three comma rules in their writing interactive notebooks. Lastly, we played another vocabulary review game for our test on Tuesday.

In Language Arts today the students continued to learn about poetry.  We read the poem, “The Pasture”.  We also reviewed making connections to texts, specifically on the connection between “The Pasture” and “The Good Deed”.

The students also spent time reviewing comma rules in our writing interactive notebooks as well as playing a game with our vocabulary words.

In Language Arts today the students learned about the various types of poetry. We also continued to practice rhyming patterns in poetry while reading the poem, “Ant and Grasshopper”.

The students were also given time to work on their vocabulary with a partner.  Lastly, the students spent time reviewing grammar rules associated with commas.

In Language Arts today the students learned about poetry.  We discussed some of the key vocabulary terms such as line and stanza.  We also looked at how poems rhym and read an example poem from our textbooks. The students also spent time reviewing the rules of commas.

In Language Arts today the students reviewed figurative language and story devices.  We applied what we know about figurative language and story devices to the story, The Good Deed.  We also reviewed the story and discussed how we could take what we know about theme and use it to write a constructed response. The students were given time to practice writing a response in their writing interactive notebooks.  If this was not completed in class, it is homework that will be graded on our next interactive notebook check.

In Language Arts today the students identified the genre of “The Good Deed”.  The students also finished reading the story.  With a partner, the students discussed possible themes of “The Good Deed”. They also found textual evidence to support their thinking.

I also collected the students’ creative writing pieces.  I will be reading them over the weekend.

In Language Arts today the students had a pop quiz on point of view.  They were required to identify the point of view in a story, explain how they knew what the point of view was, and use evidence from the text to support their thinking.  I will have these graded by Monday.

The students also spent time organizing their creative writing.  I will be collecting their writing pieces at the end of class tomorrow and looking at them over the weekend. I am hoping to return these to students on Monday too.

Lastly, the students began reading The Good Deed.  They practiced identifying the genre of The Good Deed as well as the theme of the story.

In Language Arts today the students continued to learn about theme.  We discussed the various types of theme a story can have as well as how a theme can apply as a life lesson.

The students also spent time hovering for words they do not know and making plans for our new word wall.  Tomorrow they will work on creating the word wall in class.
