In Language Arts today the students reviewed for their test tomorrow.  They will be tested on author’s purpose, point of view, text features, and there will be comprehension questions from “Eleven”.

The students were also given time to organize their interactive notebooks if they needed some time to catch up.

Lastly, we spent time in class reading our article of the week.  The response for this week is still going to focus on author’s purpose.  Since last week, we have spent a lot of time in class reviewing how to cite textual evidence and formulating a constructed response-specifically for author’s purpose.  Therefore, we will be focusing on the same topic two weeks in a row.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Homework:

Today was library day in Language Arts.  The students were given the opportunity to go to the library and select two new good fit books.  At this point, all of the students have their reading NWEA scores and lexile ranges in their reading interactive notebook.  We discussed using these lexile ranges to find good fit books and used them today in the library.

The students also spent time organizing their reading and writing interactive notebooks.  I will be checking these on Thursday.

Lastly, the students played a matching game to further their knowledge of point of view.

Have a fantastic evening!

Monday, October 10, 2016

In Language Arts today the students continued to practice with point of view.  We did so by rereading “Eleven” but focusing solely on the point of view.

The students were also given their article for this week. We reviewed text features and made predictions about what the article could be about.

Lastly, the students spent time preparing their reading and writing interactive notebooks for checking.  At the end of each unit, I check students’ notebooks and grade them.  I give students several days to get organized during Daily 5 time in case they were absent or missed directions.  I will be grading notebooks on Thursday during class.

The end of the first marking is this Friday.  Per the team syllabus, late work will not be accepted by Ms. Jones, Mr. Peterson, Ms. Taha, or myself this week. I know that many families become concerned about grades during the last week of the marking.  I encourage everyone to check student connect as I will be keeping it updated on a daily basis.  If you have any questions, please email me at the email address I gave on the syllabus.  Remember, I am not responding to comments on the blog because there is not a way to make the conversation private and I like to keep things about children confidential. If your child lost their syllabus, I have extra copies in the classroom they are welcome to take home. If you need one, please remind them to grab one from the While You Were Out folder in class.  They should know which folder I am referring to.

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students were introduced to the point of view rap song.  We will be using this tool to help us remember the different types of point of view.

The students also learned how to write a constructed response.  We specifically focused on author’s purpose as well as how to use and cite textual evidence to support our thinking.

Lastly, the students played a game to help them learn their vocabulary words.

All late assignments are due at 3:05 today.  I will not be able to accept (vocab word) any assignment that was due Friday, October 7th or earlier.

Have a great weekend!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Article of the Week Response Due Monday

Thursday, October 6, 2016

In Language Arts today the students read the story, “Eleven.”  While they were reading, they identified the author’s purpose for writing the story. Tomorrow, we will be working on creating a response about the author’s purpose and using textual evidence to support our thinking.

The students also continued to learn about point of view.

Lastly, the students were given time to work with the words on the word wall.

Next Friday is the end of the marking period which means all late work is due tomorrow.  Any assignment that is not turned in by 3:05 will not be accepted by any teacher.

Have a great evening!

Today in Language Arts the students learned about point of view.  We discussed that there are four different perspectives a story can come from and they were given a flow chart to help them find the right point of view in a text.  This was glued into their interactive notebooks.

The students also learned about the last two types of text features.

Lastly, the students reviewed the text features within their article of the week and how this helps them gain a better understanding of the article.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

In Language Arts today the students wrapped up their vocabulary word wall.  They then presented the words to their classmates.  I will have a picture of our word wall on the blog post tomorrow.

The students also continued to learn about text features and we applied what we have learned to our article of the week. We read the article in class today too.

Lastly, the students began learning about point of view.

I sent home progress reports with students who have a 70% or lower as their grade for this marking period.  The students were asked to have the progress report signed and returned by Friday.  A majority of the students received this grade due to missing work.  All students can turn in any missing assignment between now and Friday for full credit.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Summer Learning Due Friday
  3. All Late Work Due Friday

Monday, October 3, 2016

In Language Arts today the students built their first interactive word wall.  These will be the vocabulary words they are tested on in the future.  Typically, vocabulary tests occur two to three weeks after the wall is created. I will also be giving the students the link to a website where they can play games with their vocabulary words.

The students also continued to learn about text features and they looked for text features they have learned about in their article of the week.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Summer Learning Due Friday
  3. All Late Work Due Friday

Friday, September 30, 2016

In Language Arts today the students turned in their reading log.  They also continued to learn about text features and reviewed author’s purpose.

Lastly, the students spent time on a website we use called MobyMax.  This is a website that furthers their skills in reading, grammar, vocabulary, mathematics, and science.  In our class, we will be focusing primarily on the grammar portion.  The students will be provided with activities through the program that reinforce the grammar that we are learning about in class.  We have not started grammar lessons yet and will not be doing so until the second marking period. Today the students took the placement test to set up the program and practiced logging in.  Like most Language Arts assignments, the students will be provided with class time to work in MobyMax and will only be required to do this at home if they do not complete the program during class time.

Please pay close attention to the homework assignments on today’s post.  The first marking period ends two weeks from today and since it is the beginning of the year and we haven’t had a lot of assignments, completing each task is crucial.  The reading log/book summary for the summer learning assignment is in the grade book as summative per district requirements.  That means it counts as a test grade.  All students have until next Friday to submit this assignment.  Please make sure that the assignment is completed or it will greatly impact grades for first marking period.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes

Today in Language Arts the students continued to learn about text features. At this point, we have learned about maps, charts/graphs, types of print, the table of contents, glossaries, and indexes. The students also continued to learn about author’s purpose.  The students participated in an activity where they had to place various writing scenarios with the correct reasoning behind why authors would write on each topic.

Have a great evening and don’t forget to wear black and white tomorrow for spirit day!
