I would like to send a special thank you to all of the families who got me gifts this week.  I feel so fortunate to have such compassionate families to work with this year and I appreciate all of you.

I hope you have a wonderful break filled with lots of fun and wonderful memories!

See you in 2017!

The students also spent time doing Daily 5 and discussing the story they read.

I will be giving retakes for our unit test tomorrow morning at 7:15 only.  Students must have the test signed, no missing assignments, and complete the test retake response.  Here are the questions that need to be answered in order to be eligible for the retake:

  1. Why should you be allowed to retake this test?
  2. Why didn’t you do well on the test the first time you took it?
  3. In the future, what can you do to be successful on tests the first time you take them?

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students continued to learn about story vocabulary.  They also learned about analyzing the mood and tone of a story.

While in class today, it came to my attention that several students have been choosing to use their Daily 5 Read Theory time to go on to other websites and play games.  Unfortunately, I can no longer trust the students who have made this choice to use their time on the computer within the classroom wisely.  Therefore, some students will now be required to complete five lessons on Read Theory each week instead of working on it for two rounds of Daily 5 in class.  This will need to be done as homework and any student who does not complete this will have a missing assignment.  I will be notifying families of students who will now be asked to complete this assignment at home each week until they have earned my trust to be on the computer during Daily 5 at school.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. 2 lessons on Read Theory for students who cannot participate at school

In Language Arts today the students spent time in the library.  I encouraged them to get more books than they normally would to last them for the break since they are required to read for 300 minutes between now and January 9th.

The students also spent time reviewing and taking their vocabulary test.  I will have grades updated by the end of the the day.

With the remainder of our class time, the students learned about story devices and how they can be used in a text.  These notes went into our reading interactive notebook.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes

Monday, December 19, 2016

In Language Arts today the students took their Elements of a Story Part Two Test.  I am working to have these tests graded as soon as possible.  I should have grades updated late this evening. Please bear with me since I am inputting grades as I go and students’ grades will look very low until those scores are put in.

The students were also given their Article of the Week for this week.  They were asked to identify the text features, read them, and predict what the article is going to be about.  We will read the article in class tomorrow.

Lastly, the students were given their reading log for break.  I am not requiring the reading log to be due on Friday.  Instead, I will collect all logs on Monday, January 9th.  That is when the response will be due.  Between now and then, the students should be reading for 300 minutes.  That is still 100 minutes each week and it is the only homework assignment I will be giving over the break. There are three places for families to sign but I only need one signature for all 300 minutes.

Have a great evening!

  3. Library Day-Tomorrow

The students also spent time working on their reading log response and practicing making connections to a text using the story, Tuesdays of the Other June.

Lastly, the students spent time reviewing for their test on Monday. The test will cover questions from the stories, Tuesdays of the Other June and The School Play.  The students will be allowed to use their literature books on the test.  The test will also cover topics such as the pyramid of action, genre, the types of conflict, making connections, and summarizing.

Have a fantastic weekend!
