In Language Arts today the students were given time to go the library. They were also given time for SSR. After SSR, they wrote in their notebooks. I collected and graded notebooks for their February logs. Grades have been updated to reflect their scores.

The students continued to practice organizing an essay by sorting one they have not seen before.

With the remainder of class time, students took their poetry quiz. I have updated their grades to reflect their score on this too.

Students who finished their poetry quiz with time to spare were given time to work on NewsELA. This assignment is due Friday.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. NewsELA: Binge Watching TV Shows
  3. One-Pagers Five and Six due Friday, March 20th

Friday, February 28, 2020

In Language Arts today the students continued to practice organizing an essay. This time, they were given five strips of paper. Each one was a paragraph. They had to put the essay in order from beginning to end.

The also analyzed the short story, “Ant and Grasshopper” for the theme. They were asked to provide two pieces of textual evidence and write about it in their writing notebooks. If they did not finish in class, this was assigned as homework.

I sent a Remind yesterday stating that I was moving the poetry quiz from today to Monday due to the snow days. Students should be studying for the quiz over the weekend. Remember, you need to know the 6 vocabulary terms, the 8 types of poetry, and how to identify the amount of verses, stanzas, and refrains within a poem. Additionally, you should know how to identify the rhyming pattern. All of this can be found in your interactive notebook. There is rhyming pattern practice on IXL that was due today. However, many students did not complete it. Not only should you make this up for late work if you did not complete the assignment, but it will help you study for the quiz.

At this point, grades are completely updated based on what I have received. I will be sending progress reports home next week.

Have a great weekend!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Study for your Poetry Quiz
  3. Finish your theme response on “Ant and Grasshopper” if you didn’t finish in class
  4. NewsELA: Binge Watching TV Shows due Friday

In Language Arts today the students were given time for SSR. AFterwards, they logged what they read in their writing notebooks.

The students continued to learn about poetry by reading and analyzing the poem, “The Pasture” by Robert Frost. After the analysis, we were able to connect the poem to the story we read this week, “The Good Deed” because the same poem is read in the story. We then wrote about our connection in our writing notebook. We will be having quiz on poetry on Friday, February 28th.

We also added figurative language from “The Good Deed” to our classroom figurative language board.

With the remainder of class time, the students were given time to work on their homework.

Have a great break!

In Language Arts today the students continued to practice writing. This time, they looked at a sample essay written by a sixth grade Bryant student last year. They looked at the content and organization of the essay and matched it to the IBC planning chart we looked at yesterday.

The students also continued to learn about nouns. Today they practiced identifying personal and possessive pronouns in example sentences.

With the remainder of class time, the students continued to learn about poetry. They learned poetry vocabulary words such as poem, rhythm, rhyming pattern, stanza, verse, and refrain. We also practiced identifying these concepts in poetry. We will continue to work on this tomorrow. The students have also been assigned one lesson on IXL for additional practice on rhyming patterns in poetry. This will be due with the pronoun lessons on Friday, February 28th

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students were given time for SSR. Afterwards, they wrote in their writing notebooks about what they read.

Yesterday, the students were asked to re-write directions to a prompt in kid-friendly language. If they did not finish, it was assigned as homework. Today in class, they shared their responses with their classmates. Then, we practiced dissecting a prompt independently and shared that with our classmates too.

With the remainder of class time, the students were introduced to an IBC Chart which they can use to help plan and organize their writing. We will continue to practice using this organizational tool throughout the remainder of the school year.

Have a wonderful Wednesday! (Alliteration)

Today in Language Arts the students continued to learn about the types of pronouns there are. Then, they practiced identifying pronouns as well as the type of pronoun that was being used in the example sentence. We will continue with more practice on Thursday.

The students also started learning about poetry by identifying the different types of poetry. We are going to be touching on poetry in Language Arts but the students will be going in depth with poetry in seventh grade.

With the remainder of class time, the students continued to dissect a prompt. We did our last one together today. Tomorrow, they will practice independently. Many students finished rewriting the directions in a way that made sense to them. If they did not finish in class, they must finish for homework.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  2. Finish Rewriting the “Mother to Son” directions if you didn’t finish in class

Monday, February 10, 2020

Today in Language Arts the students were given time to go to the library. We made sure to think about what we would need for the next two weeks, especially since we will not be having school next week but everyone should still be reading at home for 100 minutes.

The students also had time for SSR and writing in their notebooks.

With the remainder of class time, the students finished reading “The Good Deed”. We discussed the relationships among the characters in the story as well as connections we could make to the text.

Have a great evening! Don’t forget that tomorrow is Dress Like Your Favorite Meme Day! Show your school spirit by participating!

  2. Read Theory due Friday
  3. IXL: Pronouns due Friday, February 28th

Friday, February 7, 2020

Today in Language Arts the students were given time for SSR. They also logged what they read in their writing notebooks. During SSR, some students worked in small groups with me to update their My Learning Plan. At this point, all students should have their page updated. Ask your child to see their goals since you can view them from home!

The students also presented their vocabulary words that they felt were confusing from class the previous day. Then, we started reading “The Good Deed”, which is the story the vocabulary words came from.

Lastly, the students continued to dissect prompts by breaking down the directions in kid-friendly language and rewriting prompts in ways that made sense to them.

Have a great weekend!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. IXL: Pronouns due Friday, February 28th

Thursday, February 6, 2020

In Language Arts today the students began learning about pronoun. We talked about three types of pronouns-personal, possessive, and indefinite. We will learn about more types of pronouns on Tuesday. Moving forward, the 6th Grade ELA teachers have decided we are no longer going to be using Moby Max and IXL for grammar. From this point forward, we are only going to be giving practice on IXL starting with pronouns. There are six practice lessons on pronouns for the students to work on at home. As always, they are expected to get 100 on each of them to receive full credit for their assignment. This will not be due until Friday, February 28th which means they have three weeks to complete the assignment.

The students also reviewed what it means to make a connection to something they are reading. We reviewed the three types of connections (text to text, text to self, and text to world) during class. This should have been a review from elementary school.

Lastly, the students spent time in class hovering words they did not know in the story, “The Good Deed”. Afterwards, the students worked with a partner to create a frayer model of one of the vocabulary words we found. The students will be presenting these in class tomorrow.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Tomorrow
  3. 6 IXL Pronoun Lessons due Friday, February 28th

Wednesday, February 5, 2020

Today in Language Arts, the students were given time for SSR. Afterwards, they logged what they read in their writing notebooks. I noticed when I was checking notebooks this week that many students are repeating the same strategies while reading. We discussed the importance of branching out to use an array of strategies and the students were challenged with trying a new reading strategy they may not have used between now and the time they go on break.

The students also spent time looking at reading, language, and writing data. We compared individual, class, and team scores on these topics by looking at where we were at in the fall and where we are now. We also discussed goals that we need to set for ourselves between now and the end of the school year.

Lastly, the students spent time in class breaking down a complex writing prompt by talking to the test. For homework, the students were asked to rewrite the directions in kid-friendly language by putting the directions in their own words.

Have a wonderful Wednesday! (Alliteration)

  1. Read for 20 minutes
