In Language Arts today the students continued reading The Giver.  We completed chapter three and have been discussing the events in the story, the jobs within the community, and the vocabulary used within the community.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

Today in Language Arts the students started reading The Giver.  They read chapters one and two in class and answered guided questions.  The questions will be completed tomorrow in class because the students will use them to guide their discussion of the chapters in small groups.  Therefore, the questions are not for homework if students did not complete them.

Today was also our library day so the students spent part of class looking for new good fit books.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes

Monday, May 8, 2017

In Language Arts today the students spent time previewing The Giver.  We completed an anticipation guide and did a book bits activity where the students read portions of the text.  Based on the activities they completed today, the students were able to predict what the story is going to be about.

Throughout the course of this unit, the students will be doing a majority of their assignments in their reading interactive notebooks. They need to do this because they need their previous assignment to refer back to when working on the next.  For this reason, I will not be doing much grading between now and the end of the unit.  The students will get a large formative grade for their interactive notebooks once we have completed the novel.  The students have also been informed about this in class and we discussed strategies for keeping our notebooks organized and to make sure we have them every day.  I have encourage the students to use the cubbies in the classroom to keep their notebooks in unless they have homework.  This way they are not lost or forgotten.

Our field trip is this Friday.  Students are expected to wear a Bryant or pink shirt.  This way they are easily found while we are in the food court.  Parents who expressed interest in being a chaperone to the food court will be contacted today, tomorrow or Wednesday to confirm times.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes

Friday, May 5, 2017

In Language Arts today the students spent time finishing acting out The Prince and the Pauper.

At this point, the students have finished standardized testing for Language Arts with the exception of those who need to do make up testing, hurray!

On Monday we will be starting The Giver and analyzing this novel while we read for the remainder of the school year.  During this unit, students will be working in groups and completing a majority of their assignments in their interactive notebooks.  This means that we will not have a lot of grades that correspond to the unit, we will primarily have one large grade at the end. We had a conversation in class explaining this as well.

If students do not own their own copy of The Giver, one will be provided for them on Monday.  Students who own their own copy or are borrowing from a friend should start bringing it to class on Monday.  This will serve as our textbook for the remainder of the year.

Grades will be completely updated by the end of the day to reflect students’ grades for 5th marking.

Have a great weekend!

Today, Language Arts class worked a little bit differently than most.  In order to finish MSTEP testing but allow those that were finished to move on, Mrs. Dailing and I combined classes.  Students who were not finished with the MSTEP ELA test went to her room to finish testing.  Students who were done came to my room at acted out scenes 3-5 of The Prince and the Pauper.  We will resume our regular schedule tomorrow and finish acting out the play with our own classes.

Tomorrow is our last day of the 5th marking.  Since we have been testing for the majority of the past week, all grades are updated and will not be changing much since students haven’t been working on assignments.  Tomorrow I will add participation points for acting in The Prince and the Pauper and I will grade the reading log that is due tomorrow.  Other than that, grades are updated.

Thank you all for being so patient while we test! We are almost done!

Homework:

  1. Reading Log Due Tomorrow

In Language Arts today the students spent time learning about the history behind the Play, The Prince and the Pauper.  The students also spent time acting out the first three scenes in class.

Each student will be required to act in one scene.  This will be a participation grade that will be worth 10 formative points. If students would like to act in more than one, they are welcome to do so after everyone has participated.

We will be MSTEP testing for the next two days in Language Arts.  Instead of testing all morning in each class like we have done in the past, the students will be doing their Language Arts testing in their Language Arts class with me this week.  Next week they will do the same thing for Math in Ms. Taha’s class.  Therefore, I will not be posting to the blog again until Thursday.

All grades are completely updated and at this point, the only grades that will be added are their participation grade for acting and their reading log which will be due on Friday.

Have a great evening!
