Welcome to Week Two of our school closure plan. I listed out the whole plan last week but I wanted to remind you of this week’s assignments. Please do your best to complete the following assignments before returning to school. We will be using IXL, Read Theory, NewsELA, and your good fit book to help support your learning. Each assignment is explained below:

Read Theory

You are expected to complete 10 Read Theory Quizzes per week. The start date for Marking Period 3 is January 18th. At this point, you should have 35 quizzes completed to receive full credit. Since you are being expected to complete 10 quizzes each week, you should have 65 quizzes passed with a start date of January 18th and an end date of April 13th. That means by the end of this week, you should have passed 55 quizzes.

You are expected to complete 3 NewsELA articles while you are out of school. All three of them have been added to our classroom page on NewsELA. You are expected to complete one article each week. The directions for the assignments have been posted with the articles. They are the directions we have been following all year.

Good Fit Books

Continue to read your good fit book for 100 minutes each week (5 nights per week for 20 minutes). You should be half way through your seventh good fit book by the time you return to school on April 14th. Please utilize the public library. Many libraries have online services to borrow e-books. One-Pagers Five and Six will be due when you return on April 14th. For those who want to get started, the directions for One-Pager Number 7 will be posted to the blog and attached to this post.

In Language Arts today the students were given a few minutes at the beginning of class to review the introduction they wrote about the theme of “The Good Deed” in class yesterday. Tomorrow, I will be meeting with students to go over their writing.

The students also continued to work with vocabulary by breaking down words they did not know in the play, “The Prince and the Pauper”. Each student at the table was assigned a different task related to the term and they had to present to the class with the other people at their table.

With the remainder of class time, the students were given the opportunity to work on their Read Theory and IXL which are both due tomorrow. While they worked, I continued to meet with students to look at the introduction they wrote about the video games essay we have been analyzing. At this point, I have almost met with everyone except the people who have been absent!

Have a great evening!

Homework:

Wednesday, March 11, 2020

In Language Arts today the students were given time for SSR.

Afterwards, they hovered for words they did not know in the play, “The Prince and the Pauper”. We will be reading this play in class next week and using it to analyze characters. We also looked at some background information about Mark Twain since he is the author of “The Prince and the Pauper”.

With the remainder of class time, the students looked at the prompt from their test from yesterday. However, the prompt was slightly changed to ask students to write an essay as opposed to a constructed response. They were given time to break down the prompt and think about what the directions were asking. They then reflected on what they did on their test yesterday based upon the prompt breakdown. The students were then asked to write an introduction paragraph as if they were going to write an essay. If they did not finish writing the introduction, it was assigned as homework due tomorrow. They DO NOT have to write out an essay. We are ONLY practicing writing introductory paragraphs.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

I am going to be absent tomorrow so I am going to write the blog post for tomorrow in this post.

During Language Arts today the students were given time to practice with adjectives. We also learned about comparative and superlative adjectives. The students have the opportunity to do extra practice with these ideas on IXL. Remember, this is due NEXT Friday.

With the remainder of class time, the students worked on their theme projects. While the students were working, I met with kids to review the introductions they wrote in class yesterday. I did not finish and plan to do so on Monday during SSR.

Progress Reports for Language Arts were sent home with students today who have a 70% or lower in Language Arts. I told students I would give them until Monday to get late work turned in and increase their grade. Students who do not do this by Monday will be getting a phone call home from me to notify families of their progress. Please ask your child if they received a Progress Report from me or check Parent Connect.

Tomorrow, the students will be doing SSR. With the remainder of class time, they will be finishing their theme projects. Projects that are not completed by the end of class must be done for homework over the weekend. They will be presenting on Monday.

For your planning purposes, we will be taking our Unit Three Test on Tuesday. This will include comprehension questions from the story,
“The Good Deed” as well as whichever story the students are presenting in class on Monday. This will vary depending on the story each child chose to read. The students will also be asked questions about theme and making connections. They can use their interactive notebook and their presentation to study. They will be allowed to use their literature book while taking the test.

Have a great weekend! Don’t forget Read Theory and NewsELA are due tomorrow!

Tuesday, March 3, 2020

Today in Language Arts the students began working on a theme project. They were given four story choices. They were asked to choose one to read and identify the theme of. This is something they are working on in small groups with other students who chose to read the same story they did. They will be putting this information on Google Slides through Google Classroom and presenting to their classmates on Monday. We will be working on this project each day in class between now and then.

The students also continued to learn about writing by sorting another essay. This time, the essay they were given was missing a paragraph. Not only did the students have to organize the essay, but they had to explain how they knew which paragraph was missing based on the information they were given. Tomorrow we will be writing the introduction paragraph to this essay in class.

Lastly, the students spent time in class learning about adjectives. They were assigned three lessons on IXL to support them with adjectives as we learn about them over the next couple of weeks. The students were also assigned two lessons on theme to support them as they work on their project. All of their IXL will be due NEXT Friday.
