In Language Arts today we learned about vocabulary in The Prince and the Pauper.  We spent time analyzing the vocabulary and talking about the dialect so we will be ready to start acting in class tomorrow!

The students also spent time learning about the Greek and Latin Root, “graph”.

Remember, the final draft of the Compare and Contrast Essay is due at the beginning of class tomorrow.  It is the responsibility of the students to remember to print their essay at home or in the library before or after school. Students will not be given permission to leave class to print.

Our three Read Theory quizzes are due tomorrow as well.

During class the students received the written portion of their Unit Test from Monday back.  The students can view the computer section on iLearn at home.  Retakes will be Tuesday before school at 7:20 or Tuesday after school at 3:00 in my room.  Any student is eligible for a retake but the second score will replace the original in the grade book. Students must sign up in advance to be eligible for the retake and have the written part of their original test signed. They must bring it with them the day of the test.  If they miss the section they signed up for or do not have the required materials, a make up date for the test will not be given.

Have a great evening!

Today in Language Arts the students were given time to go to the library.  When we returned, the students spent the remainder of class working on their unit test. I will do my best to have grades updated by the end of the day today.  If I don’t get it done, I will definitely be done by Tuesday evening.

I wanted to take some time to post some upcoming important assignments to today’s blog post.  There is still time to get it all done but I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of the expectations since the end of the 3rd marking is two weeks from this Thursday.

All late work for the marking period will be due on Friday, March 23rd.  That is a week from this Friday.  I will take any assignment that has not turned in from 3rd marking period between now and then.  Remember, I do not take points off for late work.

The end of the marking period is two weeks from this Thursday (March 29th). The marking does not end on a Friday since spring break begins on the 30th. That means that one-pagers will be due on Thursday, March 29th.  If students turn them in early, I will grade them early.

The students have also been assigned a NewsELA lesson that goes with the new unit on plays we will be starting Wednesday.  They are expected to label the text features, predict what the article is going to be about, read the article with a partner, reassess their predictions, take the quiz, and write the constructed response by next Friday, March 23rd. We will be talking more about this in class tomorrow.

Lastly, our last unit of Moby Max has been assigned too.  It will be the first grade on the new marking period.  It will not be due until after spring break on Monday, April 9th. This will be our last Moby Max unit for the year!

Have a great evening!

Classes were shorter today because Advisory was an hour log at the end of the day. We had Game Day as a reward for PBIS.

During class, the students spent time finishing the rough draft of their compare and contrast essay.  If the students did not finish in class, it is homework.

We will be having our next unit test on Monday.  The students need to know what theme is, how to make connections, poetry, prefixes, suffixes, and root words, the story “The Good Deed”, and the story they focused on for their Theme Project. Study tools can be found in their interactive notebooks and on Google Classroom. They will be allowed to use their literature books for the entire test.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Today in Language Arts the students continued to learn about Greek and Latin Roots. We focused on the root, “bio”.

The students also contrasted the themes of a story and poem of their choice.  We used the information we have gathered for the past two days to start our next paper. This paper will be a compare and contrast essay focusing on the similarities and differences in the themes of the story and poem they choose to read.

Remember, tonight is Math and Literacy Night!  Bryant families are welcome to come and participate in the different math and reading activities that we have.  There will be snacks and the book fair will be open too!

Have a great evening!

Wednesday, March 7, 2018

Today in Language Arts the students began learning about Greek and Latin Root Words.  We will be learning two works a week.  If students would like to learn a third word, they can spend time doing this during Daily 5.  Learning an extra word each week is a wonderful opportunity for extra credit.

The students also began writing their Compare and Contrast Essay today.  We started by identifying a poem that has a theme that is the same as our theme project story.  The students were asked to complete the similarities of the theme between the poem and the story by the end of class.  If they did not finish, it was homework.  We will work on the differences tomorrow.  This does not need to be done for homework.

We will be having our next test on Monday.  The test will focus on theme, making connections, “The Good Deed”, poetry, the story they choose for their theme project, prefixes, suffixes, and root words. The students will be able to use their literature book on the test.

Parent Teacher Conferences are today at 3:30.  Since Ms. Jones and Mr. Peterson are on two teams, they will be meeting with families together.  Ms. Taha and I will be meeting in her room together as well (room 41). If you plan to attend, please bring your child with you. We will be meeting with families individually so there may be a wait tonight to meet with teachers.

In Language Arts today the students were given the entire class period to work on their theme project.  They were asked to read a story, identify key vocabulary, figurative language, summarize what they read, and identify the theme using textual evidence to support their thinking. We will be presenting these projects in class tomorrow.

We have several events going on this week that I will be adding to today’s blog post.  Tomorrow the book fair opens.  Students will be given time during Language Arts to go to the book fair and shop. The book fair will be open all week, during conferences, and Math and Literacy Night.

Conferences will be taking place on Wednesday.  We will start meeting with parents at 3:30.  Ms. Taha and I will be meeting with families in her room (41) and Mr. Peterson and Ms. Jones will be meeting together as well. We will be meeting with families individually so the earlier you arrive, the more likely you are to spend less time in line.  We will not be meeting with families after 6:30.

Lastly, Math and Literacy Night will be taking place on Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30.  There will be stations throughout the school with lots of fun activities for the whole family! I hope to see you there! One of the stations will be a Read Aloud.  At this station, 6th grade students who have signed up in advance will be reading their personal narrative to our guests.  They must sign up outside of Ms. Dailing’s classroom in advance.  Any 6th grader who reads their narrative will be given five summative points of extra credit.

Have a great evening!

  3. Theme Project Presentations Tomorrow

Thursday, March 1, 2018

Today in Language Arts the students continued to learn about theme.  We read the poem, “Message from a Caterpillar” and the short story, “Ant and Grasshopper”. Then, we practiced identifying the theme for both.  We practiced writing a CER response together using “Message from a Caterpillar” and we wrote one for “Ant and Grasshopper” independently.  If the CER response for “Ant and Grasshopper” was not finished by the end of class it is homework that is due tomorrow.

The students also started working on a project in class today.  I have added the checklist for this project to the rubric.  They students were given a preview of short stories to choose from.  They were given time in class today and will be given all of class tomorrow to work on this project.  They are required to read the story they chose and create a presentation that will be due on Monday.  This presentation must include key vocabulary from the story, figurative language, a summary of what they read, and a CER on the theme. This presentation will be done on Slide through their gmail accounts.  They are also working in a group to complete this assignment.  We will be presenting on Monday.

One-Pager Number Six was also given to the students.  I have attached the directions to this blog post too.  One-Pagers Five and Six are both due on Thursday, March 29th which is the last day of the marking period.

Don’t forget tomorrow is game day!  The students will go directly to their core classes at the beginning of the day and we will spend the last hour of school playing games in our Advisory.  This is a PBIS reward.

Have a great evening!
