In Language Arts today the students finished writing their group CER about the conflict in “Tuesdays of the Other June”. Then, they presented their conflict to the class.

Afterwards, we spent time talking about where evidence of quality comes from and how their can be different types of textual evidence such as facts and statistics.

The students also worked on some practice with various types of nouns.  If this was not finished before they left class, it was assigned as homework that will be due tomorrow. I have attached a copy of the assignment to this blog post.

Lastly, the students ordered their Scholastic book for the month of November.  These books should be here when we get back from the break.

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students spent time participating in two group activities.  The first one is called “The Last Word”. The students used their double entry journal from yesterday to share one of the quotes they selected with the rest of their group.  Then, the groupmates commented on what the quote made them think.  After going around the table, the person who originally read the quote shared their thinking.  The students also reflected on how some of their ideas were similar while others were different.

The second group activity we did is called Rainbow Write. The students worked together to write a CER paragraph focusing on the conflict of “Tuesdays of the Other June”. We will be presenting these group CERs in class tomorrow.

Tonight is the last night for conferences.  Ms. Taha and I will be together in room 41.  These conferences are student-led. Our students have been working very hard to reflect and prepare what they have done during first marking for their families. We are asking that they present to their families first and if there are questions afterwards, a teacher can come to discuss. If the family has no questions, they are not required to speak with teachers and can move on to another classroom. Conferences will begin at 3:30 and end at 6:30.

I hope to see families tonight that were unable to attend on Monday!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Friday
  3. Moby Max: Nouns due Tuesday

In Language Arts today the students continued to learn about nouns by discussing how singular possessive and plural possessive nouns.

We also spent time in class reviewing facts and opinions and discussing elements that make a statement a fact or an opinion.  We will continue building on this idea over the course of the next couple of weeks and using this idea as a foundation for argumentative writing. If this was not finished in class, it was homework.

Lastly, the students went back into the story we read on Friday, “Tuesdays of the Other June”, and pulled out quotes from the text that made them think.  They also wrote down why these quotes were important or what thoughts they had about the quote. If this was not finished in class, it was homework.

Tomorrow is the last evening for conferences.  Math and Language Arts conferences for our team will be held in Ms. Taha’s room (41) from 3:30 to 6:30.  I look forward to seeing families that were unable to attend on Monday!

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students were given time to go to the book fair.  The book fair will be located in the lobby all week and it will be open during conferences. I will not be giving more class time to go but students can stop in on their way to lunch, after school, or during conferences.

The students also spent time in class reading a new article on NewsELA about self-driving cars.  We reviewed the expectations for talking to the text and read with a partner.

Tonight is the first night for conferences.  Ms. Taha and I will be doing student-led conferences together in her room.  Report cards can be picked up outside of the office prior to coming to classrooms that way every family knows where their child is at academically before seeing teachers. Once in classrooms, we ask that families discuss with their children before asking the teacher questions.  We have spent a lot of time in class learning to advocate for ourselves, reflecting on our progress, and working to prepare what we have learned for our families. Teachers would be happy to talk with families after students have shared.  We are asking that our students come to conferences because it is their learning that we are talking about so they should be part of the conversation. Ms. Taha’s room is room 41. Tonight, conferences are from 4:00-7:00 however, Ms. Taha will be leaving at 6:30 so she is starting to allow families to come to her room at 3:30. I will remain in her room until 7:00.  If you would like to speak with both of us, I recommend coming between 4:00 and 6:30.  I apologize if this is an inconvenience. On Wednesday, conferences will be from 3:30 to 6:30 for both of us.

I hope to see you this evening!

During Language Arts the students finished putting together their Student-Led Conference notes.

We also spent time talking about singular vs. plural nouns and the irregularities there can be when making nouns plural. We spent time practicing this as well.  The students were assigned four lessons on Moby Max to further practice nouns at home.  These lessons will be due on Tuesday, November 20th.

Lastly, the students were given the directions to One-Pager Number Three.  I have attached the directions to this blog post and I will add the link to the assignment as a tab on the home page of my blog as well.

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students began preparing for their Student-Led Conferences. Conferences will be taking place next Monday and Wednesday.  Conferences for Language Arts and Math will be held in Ms. Taha’s room.  We encourage our students to attend with their families.

The students also presented vocabulary that they explored from the story, “Tuesdays of the Other June” that we will be reading in class later in the week.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Friday

Friday, November 2, 2018

In Language Arts today the students worked in stations.  They were given time to work on assignments that were due today like Read Theory, Moby Max, and One-Pagers One and Two. They also spent time organizing their writing folders and finishing the thank you letters to people who sponsored them for Scholastic books for the year.

Students who finished early were rewarded by being given the opportunity to use the last few minutes of class for game time. They used their game time minutes Moby Max gives them for working on grammar assignments through their website to play games on Moby Max.

At this point, no students’ grade is completely up to date.  Everyone looks like they have a very low grade in Language Arts but they do not.  As scores get entered, the grade will improve. If you look at the amount of points an assignment is worth, check the amount of points the student received, and see no number, that means the assignment has not been graded yet.  I plan to have everything graded by the end of the weekend.  I will send a Remind as I complete grading.

Have a fantastic weekend and congratulations on completing the first marking of middle school!

Today in Language Arts the students continued to learn about classifying nouns.  We focused on how we can determine if a noun is concrete or abstract.

The students also continued to learn about conflict by looking at specific types of internal and external conflict including man v. man, man v. nature, man v. society, and man v. self. An example video has been added to this blog post.

Remember, tomorrow is the end of the first marking.  I will be submitted report cards this weekend which means all work from first marking must be turned in by 3:05 tomorrow.

Have a great evening!
