In Language Arts today the students were given time to work on their brochure project and finish up their NewsELA article on Mark Twain. The article was due at the end of class. The brochure project is due tomorrow. If it was not finished, it was sent home as homework. The example is included in the blog post from Friday.

The students were also given time to go to the library and select new good fit books.  Every student should have started their seventh good fit book for the year at this point and they should be reading it over break next week.

Lastly, the class selected their electives for seventh grade. These can be viewed by families at home through Student Connect. What they have chosen is not final and can be edited on the computer. The students were told to go home and show their families the classes the chose to make sure the choices best met their needs. If you have any questions about courses for next year, please contact the counseling office.

Have a great evening!

I will be giving them final draft paper and time to work on this in class on Monday.

The students also spent time practicing brainstorming for a non-fiction essay. They were asked to identify possible themes in the story they did their theme project on (Lob’s Girl, The Dog of Pompeii, Jeremiah’s Song, and Scout’s Honor). Then, they needed to plan out an essay. We will not be writing an essay in class, we are practicing the planning of essays.

The students also spent time in class using an IBC Chart to brainstorm an essay. We will not, be writing out the actual essay, we are just spending time practicing the plan.

Have a great evening!

Monday, March 18, 2019

In Language Arts today the students spent time acting out scenes two, three, and four of The Prince and the Pauper. After they finished, we discussed traits of the characters we know so far.

We also continued to work on writing by discussing and acronym we can use to help us remember brainstorming. This acronym is RACER. It stands for…

The RACER Strategy:
  • R – Restate the question to create a topic sentence.
  • A – Answer the question completely.
  • C – Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.
  • E – elaborate/explain the evidence.
  • R – restate the answer to create a closing sentence OR relate the answer to something in your own life.

We will be using the strategy to help us with our non-fiction writing for the remainder of the school year.

Many students have missing or incomplete assignments. Please be aware all late work is due THIS Friday. Remember, I will not be accepting more than three late assignments per student for the marking period.

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students presented their vocabulary words to the class. They also finished their notes about background information for The Prince and the Pauper. We are going to start acting out the play in class tomorrow.

The students were also given another writing prompt. This time, they were asked to analyze and rewrite the directions on their own. If they did not finish this in class, it was assigned as homework. We will be going over it in class tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the retake for the Unit Three Test. Students may take it at 7:15 tomorrow morning in my room or tomorrow after school in Mrs. Dailing’s room. They must be signed up in class in order to be eligible for the retake. They must also have a signed written note from a parent or guardian. Without these two things, no retake will be given.  Additionally, the retake will not have a “check answer” option like our tests normally do.  This means the students will not be given multiple attempts to answer a question like they normally are.

We are having a grammar and poetry quiz on Friday. If students do not take their interactive notebooks home to study poetry vocabulary and the different types of poetry we learned about in class, the quiz will be very challenging.

Have a wonderful Wednesday! (Alliteration)

In Language Arts today the students analyzed the directions for a more complicated Text Dependent Analysis. We also spent time talking about what we would do next if we were to actually follow the directions.

The students also spent time talking about apostrophes and how to use them in our writing.

Lastly, we looked at vocabulary words from “The Prince and the Pauper”. Each student was assigned a different part of the word to analyze. Students with blue paper wrote the term, students with red paper wrote the definition, yellow paper is for the part of speech, green paper is for synonyms, pink paper is for the in context and the white paper is for the visual. The students will be given a few minutes at the beginning of class to finish this and then they will present their vocabulary to the class with their tablemates.

Retakes for the Unit Three Test will be offered on Thursday before school at 7:15 or after school at 3:00. Students need to sign up in class and have a note signed from a parent/guardian stating that they can attend the retake.  The tests the students take in class allow them to check their answer three times and still receive credit for answering the question correctly.  The retake will not be set up this way.  If a question is incorrect, there will be no second chance at answering it correctly.
