In Language Arts today the students took their Unit One Test. I will do my best to have grades updated as soon as possible to reflect scores but I most likely will not finish until Friday.

I am also in the process of grading the interactive notebooks I collected.

Have a great evening! Don’t forget tomorrow is Halloween! If you have one card of Eagle Etiquettes filled, you will be allowed to wear your costume to school. Your costume MUST FOLLOW THE SCHOOL DRESS CODE! The following items are not allowed:

  1. Masks
  2. Any sort of weapon(s)
  3. Face paint
  4. Blood and Gore
  5. Spray painted hair

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Friday
  3. Writing Notebook Check Friday

In Language Arts today the students were given time to organize their notebooks. I will be collecting their blue interactive notebooks tomorrow for a grade.

With the remainder of class time, the students played Jeopardy to help them review for their unit test tomorrow. They should be using their blue interactive notebooks to study since this is their study guide. They will be allowed to use their literature books on the test but not their blue interactive notebooks.

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Study for your Unit One Test Tomorrow: Author’s Purpose, Points of View, Story Vocabulary, Pyramid of Action, “Eleven”, and “The School Play”
  3. Interactive Notebook Check Tomorrow
  4. Writing Notebook Check Friday
  5. Read Theory due Friday

Monday, October 28, 2019

In Language Arts today the students took their quiz on the Parts of Speech. I will have grades updated by the end of the day to reflect their scores.

After the quiz, the students were given time to work on their NewsELA article about self-driving cars. This will not be due until Friday, November 8th and will be one of the first grades on the new marking period.

Lastly, we spent time in class organizing our interactive notebooks. These notebooks are being used as study guides for the unit test on Wednesday. On Wednesday, I will collect them for a grade. Students will be allowed to use their literature book on the test but not their interactive notebooks. The retake is also built in to the assessment meaning the students can attempt each question three times while taking the test and receive credit for answering the question unless the question is true/false.

Several students did not turn in their one-pagers or setting project which is extremely disappointing because of the amount of time they were given to complete the assignments both in and out of the classroom. Students can turn these assignments in late but since all late work was due on Friday, I cannot guarantee that I will get them graded in time to be reflected on their report cards.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Study for your Unit One Quiz on Wednesday: Author’s Purpose, Point of View, Story Vocabulary, Pyramid of Action, “Eleven”, and “The School Play”
  3. ISN Check Wednesday
  4. Read Theory due Friday
  5. Writing Notebook Check Friday

Announcements:

  1. Don’t forget PBIS Cider and Donuts is Wednesday before school at 7:30. Students are still expected to be in Advisory at 8:00.
  2. If one Eagle Etiquette Card is filled in their planner, students will be allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school on Thursday. These costumes must follow our school dress code. Students are not allowed to wear masks, have any sort of weapon(s), wear face point, have blood and gore on them in any way, or spray paint their hair. While this is meant to be fun, we will still be doing learning in class and cannot disrupt the learning process.

In Language Arts today the students were given time to organize their good fit book(s) and homework.

We also spent a lot of class time talking about studying for our first unit test and quiz which will both be taking place next week. The students can use their notebooks, Quizlet through Google Classroom, and Moby Max to help them prepare.

I am going to be doing my best this weekend to get as much grading done as possible to get grades updated as quickly as I can. However, report cards do not need to be turned in until next weekend. My goal is to finish grading by Sunday night to have time to make any adjustments to grades that may need to be made. I am usually an efficient grader but I may not make my goal. I will send a remind to my blocks once their grades are updated based on what I have received. Please do not email me or ask about grades until I have sent a Remind stating that grades are updated. At times, grades may look very low while I am in the process of updating them because I have to input the grades as a whole class as opposed to doing it for each student individually. Until a score is input, the grade in the computer will look very low. Please be patient as I work on this. There are 84 of you but I am 1 person. If I mark something as missing but you know you turned it in, it is possible you put your assignment in with the wrong class and I haven’t graded it yet or you didn’t put your name on it. If this happens, we will get it sorted out next week.

Have a great weekend!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Study for your Parts of Speech Quiz on Monday
  3. Study for your Unit One Test on Wednesday (Author’s Purpose, Point of View, Story Vocabulary, Pyramid of Action, “Eleven”, and “The School Play”

Thursday, October 24, 2019

In Language Arts today the students participated in a gallery walk activity where they discussed parts of “The School Play”.

The students were given the remainder of class time to work on any assignments from the marking period they needed to complete. I met with students who turned in their one-pagers early to help improve on areas where the directions were not completed. If they finished before class ended, they could turn their assignment back in. If they needed more time, they took the assignment home for homework.

Since many assignments for Language Arts are due tomorrow, grades will be in the process of being updated throughout the course of the weekend. While grades are being updated, they will appear to be low. I am telling you now that grades WILL NOT be accurate and updated this weekend. I will send a Remind when I have finished updating grades based on what I have received. Please DO NOT email me asking about grades until I have sent the Remind.

Have a great evening!

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

In Language Arts today the students finished reading “The School Play” and discussing the story. While we read, they added their thoughts about the text to their notebook. We also worked together to organize the major events onto a pyramid of action in our interactive notebook.

The students were introduced to their first project in Language Arts. This will be a setting project. The students can choose between “The School Play” and “Elevel”. They must find evidence from the text that helps them visualize the setting of the story and draw a picture of it. This picture should fill their entire paper and it should be in color. They must also label the parts of the picture that match their quotes. Additionally, they need to copy their quotes on to the edge of their picture. This is going to be a summative grade on the marking period and is being done independently as opposed to with a partner or group. The students will be given the entire class period tomorrow to do this and the assignment will be due on Friday. If students finish early, they are being given time to work on their Read Theory, Late Work, Moby Max., and One-Pagers One and Two.

Since tomorrow in class is a work day, I will not be posting to the blog tomorrow.

Have a fantastic evening!

In Language Arts today the students were given time to go to the library and select a book. Students who are not done with their one-pagers and are using a library book were encouraged to keep those books for two more weeks. The rest of the class had the choice between starting their third good fit book or getting a graphic novel.

We also spent time in class going over expectations for the end of the marking period. I will be giving students class time on Wednesday and Thursday to get caught up on work that is due on Friday. All late work for the First Marking Period is due THIS Friday. No late work will be accepted for the marking period after Friday, October 25th.

The students will be having their first test and quiz next week. Their quiz will be on Monday focusing on parts of speech. They can use Moby Max, Quizlet, and their interactive notebook to help them study. Their Unit One Test will be NEXT Wednesday and focus on author’s purpose, point of view, story vocabulary, and the pyramid of action. Questions about “Eleven” and “The School Play” will be on the test as well. The students will be allowed to use their literature books while taking the Unit Test. Additionally, they can use their interactive notebook to study. Retakes for my tests and quizzes are built in. This means, the students get three opportunities to answer each question on the test for credit while taking the test.

With the remainder of our class time, the students started with “The School Play”. We will finish reading the story and discussing the pyramid of action tomorrow in class.

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students participated in a socratic seminar where they discussed the pros and cons of kids being allowed to play video games. All week, we have been gathering facts and looking at the viewpoints of others. Today, the students were allowed to use the facts they have gathered to form their own opinion about the topic. After the discussion they wrote a CER in their writing notebooks about whether or not video games have a positive effect on today’s youth.

With the remainder of class time, the students hovered for words they do not know in the story, “The School Play”, from our literature book. We will be reading this story in class on Monday.

Have a fantastic weekend! Don’t forget Monday is our library day!

Thursday, October 17, 2019

In Language Arts today the students continued to work with the negative side of video games. They did this by finding events to show that video games have a negative impact on kids. They also had to explain why they chose the evidence they did.

Most students were able to finish this activity in class and have a few extra minutes to work on their one-pagers. The few students who did not finish are expected to finish gathering evidence tonight for homework.

Have a great evening!

Today in Language Arts the students were given time to read their good fit book and write in their Metacognitive Log.

They also learned about the pyramid of action and how they can use the pyramid to organize the events that take place within a story.

Lastly, the students read an article titled “The Violent Side of Video Games” and discussed the negative impacts video games have had since we have spent the majority of our time reading about the positive impact video games have.

Have a great evening!
