In Language Arts today the students were given time for SSR with their good fit book. Afterwards, they wrote about what they read in their log.

With the remainder of class time, the students rotated in stations of their choice. Their options were:

  • Read Theory
  • Moby Max
  • One-Pagers
  • SSR
  • Finish reading “Tuesdays of the Other June”
  • Work on Late Work

Have a fantastic weekend!

Homework:

  2. Moby Max: Nouns due Tuesday, November 26th

Thursday, November 14, 2019

In Language Arts today the students learned about concrete and abstract nouns. We also did some practice identifying them.

With the remainder of our class time, the students read the story “Tuesdays of the Other June”. If they did not finish reading the story in class, they are expected to do it tonight for homework. However, most students were able to finish.

Thank you to those of you who took time out of your day to come to conferences last night. It is always nice to be able to meet with families! The make-up date for conferences has been scheduled for next Monday, November 18th from 4:00 to 7:00. If you were unable to attend last night, we will be available to meet on Monday.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Tomorrow
  3. Moby Max: Nouns due Tuesday, November 26th

Wednesday, November 13, 2019

In Language Arts today the students explored the vocabulary words in “Tuesdays of the Other June”. Afterwards, the students started reading the story. This is one of the longer texts we read in class. We did not finish today but will continue to read in class together tomorrow.

Conferences are from 3:30 to 6:30 after school today. I encourage all families to arrive no later than 6:15 to ensure you have time to meet with the teachers you would like to see. Language Arts and Math conferences will be taking place in Ms. Taha’s room (41). I have swim practice after school and will not be available before 4:30. I apologize for the inconvenience. Report cards can be picked up outside of the office prior to visiting classrooms. Our conferences are student-led. The students have been working very hard in class to reflect on their progress thus far in 6th grade. They will be presenting to their families. After the presentation from your child, anyone who has questions is welcome to wait and ask the teacher. Otherwise, you may move on to the next classroom. Since conferences for Monday were canceled, there will be a make up date next week. However, that date has not been finalized at this time. I will post to my blog once I know when the make up date will be but as of right now, it looks like it will be next Monday or Wednesday.

Have a wonderful Wednesday and I look forward to seeing students and their families tonight!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Friday
  3. Moby Max: Nouns due Tuesday, November 26th

In Language Arts today the students were given time to go to the book fair. If they had money, they were allowed to buy books. The book fair will be open during conferences as well as each school day this week.

With the remainder of class time, the students explored the vocabulary in a story we will be reading later this week, “Tuesdays of the Other June”.

Tonight conferences are being held from 4:00 to 7:00. Please try your best to arrive no later than 6:45. Otherwise, teachers may not have the time to meet with you before 7:00. Our conferences are student-led. The students have been working hard to reflect on their learning thus far in middle school and prepare what they have learned for you. Teachers will not discuss class work with parents until the students have presented their conference information first. Ms. Taha and I will be holding conferences together in her classroom, room 41. Please keep in mind that we do not schedule conference times. We also have 84 students so there may be a bit of a wait to meet with teachers. Additionally, I am the coach of the swim team at Bryant. The swim team has practice until 4:30 which means I will not be available to speak with families until after that time. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Have a great evening and I hope to see you this week!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Friday

Friday, November 8, 2019

In Language Arts today the students were given time to read their good fit book and write their log.

We spent the remainder of class time reflecting on our first marking period behavior and academic progress. We will use this information at conferences next week.

Next Monday and Wednesday are conferences. In middle school, we do not have a sign up sheet for time slots as we have many students. Conferences for Monday are from 4:00 to 7:00. Conferences for Wednesday are from 3:30 to 6:30. Please arrive no later than 6:45 on Monday and 6:15 on Wednesday to ensure that the teachers have time to meet with you. Conferences for Language Arts and Math will be held in Ms. Taha’s room. Since I am the coach of the swim team and do not have an assistant, I will be at practice with the swim team until 4:30 and will come to Ms. Taha’s room at that time on Monday and Wednesday. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Have a great weekend!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Moby Max: Nouns due Tuesday, November 26th

In Language Arts the students continued to learn about types of conflict by participating in a sorting activity. They were given different scenarios and they had to decide if the conflict was man v. man, man v. nature, man v. society, or man v. self.

The students also learned about common and proper nouns by practicing to identify nouns that were common or proper. We will continue to learn about types of nouns for the next couple of weeks in Language Arts. There are lessons that have been assigned on Moby Max to provide students with additional practice. Remember, any lesson that says “Lesson Test” is extra credit and is not a requirement. Moby Max will be due Tuesday, November 26th before we go on break.

With the remainder of class time, students were given time to work on their NewsELA and Read Theory. If they did not finish, both assignments are homework and due tomorrow. These will be the first two grades on the new marking period. I hope everyone gets started on the right foot!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Tomorrow
  3. NewsELA: Self-Driving Cars due Tomorrow
  4. Moby Max: Nouns due Tuesday, November 26th

Wednesday, November 6, 2019

In Language Arts today the students were given time for SSR and to complete their Metacognitive Log.

Afterwards, we discussed how we can be more specific about the type of conflict in a story, even more specific than internal and external!

With the remainder of class time, the students were given time to work on their NewsELA. This is due on Friday and if the students did not finish in class today, it was assigned as homework.

Classes were shorter today because students from Dearborn High School came over and performed a concert for our sixth graders. All of the students on our team were able to attend this performance and hear some live music!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Friday
  3. NewsELA: Self-Driving Cars due Friday

Monday, November 4, 2019

In Language Arts today the students were given time to go to the library and select their third good fit book for the year. Students should be starting their third good fit book today in order to keep up with their reading.

With the remainder of class time, the students reviewed conflict and learned about how to classify conflicts as internal and external.

Today is the first day of a new marking! Remember to take what you have learned from your middle school experience so far and apply it to improve yourself for the new marking period. Everyone gets a fresh start so let’s get off on the right foot!

Have a great evening and enjoy the day off tomorrow!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Friday
  3. NewsELA: Self-Driving Cars due Friday

Friday, November 1, 2019

In Language Arts today we had more of a relaxed day. The students continued to work on decorating their writing folders and they added pieces they have worked on this year to their folder.

If they needed to finish Read Theory, they were given time to do so.

Additionally, we spent time in class going over the Unit One Test. Test retakes are scheduled for Thursday, November 7th at 7:20am. Normally, an afternoon session would be offered too but since Mrs. Dailing is on maternity leave and I have swim practice after school, the only time I have for a retake is Thursday morning. In order to be eligible for a retake, students cannot have missing assignments. If their interactive notebook is significantly incomplete, meaning they scored lower than 90 out of 112 points, they will not be eligible for a retake because they did not do the work to prepare for the assessment when the material was being taught. There will be no check answer button on the retake which means the students will get one attempt at each question (since they have already had three attempts on the original test). Additionally, the second score on the assessment will be taken. I will not take the better score or the average since scores should only improve when a test is taken a second time. Students MUST sign up in class in order to attend the retake. Emails from families and students will not count as signing up for the retake. Students who do not sign up will not be allowed to retake the test. Students must also have a note from a parent or guardian stating that they understand that the student is taking the retake and it must be signed. This note must come with the student to the test retake on Thursday morning. If the student does not bring a note, they will not be allowed to retake the test.

At this point, grades are completely updated based on what has been turned in and what I have been told by students. What you see on Student/Parent Connect is the grade you can expect to see on your report card.

Have a great weekend!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes-You should be starting your third good fit book on Monday!

Thursday, October 31, 2019

In Language Arts today the students had a make-up SSR day since we spent our class time yesterday taking our unit test.

With the remainder of class time, the students set up their writing portfolios. We will be using these writing portfolios in our classroom to keep track of the processed writing we do throughout the school year. This will include both rough and final drafts.

Class were shorter today because we have a 6th grade tradition at Bryant! Each year, the sixth graders celebrate Halloween and making it through their first marking period of middle school by watching the original Jumanji in the auditorium together.

Enjoy your evening!

Homework: None unless your writing notebook is not ready to turn in or your Read Theory isn’t finished!
