Today was our library day in Language Arts.  At this point, all students should be reading their fourth good-fit book for the year.

After our library time, we began talking about the 6+1 Traits of writing and how we can use them to help improve our writing. Today we discussed ideas, organization, and voice.

The students also began writing their first essay of the year.  We will be writing an argumentative essay.  The students were given the choice between four topics based on CERs they have written in class. We began planning out our body paragraphs today.  If students did not finish planning the body paragraphs, this was assigned as homework. For extra credit, the students can add more than one piece of evidence per body paragraph. This is NOT the rough draft.  We are using this planning page to gather and organize our ideas.

Have a great evening!

Today’s post will talk about what we are doing in class today and tomorrow. Since all of the information will be given today, I will not be posting tomorrow.

At the beginning of class, the students went to the library to check out good fit books.  They should aim to be done with their third good fit book for the year by the time they return from break.

For the rest of class today and tomorrow, the students are working on the Pyramid of Action Project.  They are working in groups to identify the main events in either “The School Play” or “Tuesdays of the Other June”. They must also write two CER paragraphs focusing on the conflict and point of view of the story.  This project will be due at the end of class tomorrow and presentations will take place when we return from break on Monday, November 26th. I have attached the directions for the project to this blog post.

Since we only have a two day week, I am giving the students break from Read Theory.  However, they are still responsible for reading for 100 minutes between now and next Monday as well as completing their Article of the Week about self-driving cars on NewsELA.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
