In Language Arts the students worked on a compare and contrast assignment for “All Summer in a Day”. We had shortened classes today due to the PBIS movie and the students spent their time in class watching the movie version of “All Summer in a  Day”. Afterwards, we discussed similarities and differences between the book and the movie.

At this point, all grades have been updated to reflect everything I have been given thus far.

I am overwhelmed by the amount of thoughtful gifts I received this year and I am so thankful to have such great families to work with and wonderful students.  I hope everyone enjoys this break and gets to spend time with family and friends!

See you in 2019!

  • Today’s blog post is a combined post for today and yesterday. Yesterday, I was in a morning meeting so my classes ended up being in different places and I evened them out today.

Over the past two days, the students have been working with vocabulary from the story “All Summer in a Day”. They created a frayer model with a partner and presented that model to their classmates.

They also practiced working with interjections by inserting various ones into sentences.  Their grammar quiz is tomorrow.  It covers common and proper nouns, concrete and abstract nouns, possessive nouns, singular and plural nouns, verb participles, irregular plural verbs, and interjections. Make sure you spend time studying!

Lastly, the students spent time reading and discussing the story, “All Summer in a Day”. We will continue to look at story elements for this text tomorrow in class.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Today in Language Arts the students participated in an activity where they determined the genre of short stories. They were also given the directions to One-Pager Number Four which asks about the genre of the good fit book as part of the CER response.

We also started learning about the mood and tone of a story.  We did this by looking at well-known movies that have been given a horror twist. We discussed how a change in sound, word choice, and image can completely change the feeling given by an author to a reader while viewing and reading. I have attached the links to the clips for those who would like to watch at home.

Lastly, the students were given time to select their Scholastic Book for the month of December.

In Language Arts today the students finished peer editing their rough drafts.  Final drafts will be due on Friday. When I collect the final draft, I will also be collecting the rough draft, planning page, and peer editing sheet. The essay is to be typed on the computer.  It should be in 12 point Times New Roman OR 11 point Arial (the fonts automatically set by Word and Google Docs). The essay needs to be double spaced. At the top of the paper, the students should include their first and last name, their block number, and the date.  They should also create their own title before they type.  It is alright to make the title bolded and increase the font size to 14 or 16. I will be giving about fifteen minutes in class tomorrow to set this up and start typing.

The students also continued to learn about genres today by reviewing subgenres of non-fiction. This will be the focus of the CER response on One-Pager Number Four. I will pass out the directions for this assignment tomorrow during class and post the directions to the blog too.

Lastly, the students practiced identifying helping, linking, and action verbs in sentences.  They will be having a grammar quiz next Thursday, December 20th. Here are the topics the quiz will cover:

  • Nouns
    • Common and Proper
    • Concrete and Abstract
    • Possessives
    • Singular and Plural
  • Verbs
    • Action, Linking, and Helping
