Monday and Tuesday, September 28th and 29th

During Language Arts the students continued to learn about close reading skills and strategies by reading an article about elephants with their classmates. We have done this before with NewsELA. Unfortunately, NewsELA is no longer available to us so we will be using a website called CommonLit for the remainder of the school year. It functions in the same way NewsELA does.

During asynchronous time, the students are expected to work on passing their five Read Theory quizzes. they must also answer the questions that correspond with the elephant article they read in class. This should be done by the end of the day on Tuesday.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Answer the Guided Questions for the elephants article on CommonLit due Tuesday
  2. Pass 5 Read Theory Quizzes due Friday

Monday-Friday, September 21-25, 2020

In Language Arts this week the students are NWEA Testing. Therefore, I will not be posting to the blog.

When they finish the test, they can work on their 5 Read Theory quizzes, their Summer Learning Assignment, and their IXL lesson about capitalization. These assignments should also be worked on during asynchronous time. They are all due Friday.

For IXL, students need to get a 90 or higher to pass. Students who get a 100 will get a point of extra credit!

Go to your email to find your username and password from Ms. Taha.

Have a great week!

Wednesday and Thursday, September 16-17, 2020

During Language Arts the students were introduced to NewsELA. This is a website we use to practice close reading and writing skills for non-fiction. During class time, they were given the opportunity to read an article and express their thoughts about the article while they read. They also took a quiz on what they read. Students who did not finish this are expected to do so during asynchronous time.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Finish your NewsELA Quiz
  3. Pass 5 Read Theory Quizzes by Friday
  4. All About Me Virtual One-Pager due Friday
  5. Summer Learning Book Talk due NEXT Friday, September 25th

Monday and Tuesday, September 14-15, 2020

In Language Arts today the students reviewed how to check their assignments in Read Theory. Each week, the students will be expected to PASS five quizzes on Read Theory. Read Theory is a website we use to provide students with the opportunity to read non-fiction at their own level. Every Friday, I will be checking Read Theory to make sure the assignment is complete. When they pass quizzes, the students can earn Knowledge Points. I will be keeping track of which of my classes has the most points and at the end of the year, that class will win a prize!

In addition to Read Theory, the students are also expected to read a good fit book of their choosing for 100 minutes each week. This breaks down to 20 minutes, 5 time per week. This book should not be a graphic novel. It needs to be something that interests them and it needs to be a chapter book. By the end of the year, they are expected to have read a minimum of four chapter books. When they finish the book, they will complete a One-Pager which will be an analysis of what they read. To practice this assignment, the students have been asked to create a One-Pager about themselves. The details for this assignment can be found on Schoology. They should be working on this during their asynchronous time this week. It will be due on Friday.

With the remainder of class time, the students were given the opportunity to work on their Pre-Test for Language Arts. Students are expected to take this test independently. If they do not know something, they may guess or skip. This will not impact their grade if they do not know the answer. I am encouraging students to try their best so that I can see what they know and what we need to cover in class this year. If students did not finish this in class, they need to complete it as homework before their next Language Arts Zoom Meeting.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Finish your Language Arts Pre-Test if you didn’t finish in class. This needs to be done before our next Zoom Meeting!
  2. Read for 20 minutes
  3. Pass 5 Read Theory Quizzes by Friday at 3:15
  4. All About Me Virtual One-Pager due by Friday at 3:15
  5. Summer Learning Book Assignment due NEXT Friday, September 25th at 3:15

Friday, September 11, 2020

During Language Arts the students were given time to interact with one another and learn a little more about their classmates. They took turns sharing 1 item that represents them and then they were able to answer questions about themselves and their item.

With the remainder of class time, the students signed up for Read Theory. This is a website we will be using to help support the students’ non-fiction reading skills. During asynchronous time, the students should be taking the pre-test for this website.

Have a great weekend!

Homework:

  1. Finish your Read Theory Pre-Test by Monday
  2. Work on your Summer Learning Assignment

Wednesday, September 9, 2020

In Language Arts the students spent time reviewing the digital learning expectations they created last week. We went over the rules and expectations while we are in a Zoom meeting. We also went over the Behavior Matrix for our school. In our building, this is posted in each classroom with the expectations of students. During asynchronous time, the students were asked to reflect on one of the questions from the matrix and post their reflection to Schoology. By Friday, each student needs to respond to another classmate. This is how I will be taking attendance for asynchronous time this week.

The students also spent time going over the syllabus for our class. Please make sure families view the syllabus in the purple resource folder on our Schoology page. The information within it will be helpful for making sure everyone is successful over the course of the school year!

The students were also given the opportunity to sign up for Remind. Remind 101 is an app. that can be used to send text message reminders about what is going on in class. The teacher does not have students’ or parents’ phone number and they do not have the teachers’. Directions for signing up for Remind can be found in the purple resource folder on my Schoology page. I would encourage each student and those who support the student’s education to sign up!

At the end of class, I went over the Summer Learning expectations. Over the course of the summer, the students were asked to read three books of their choosing. They are to select one of those books, create a Google Slides presentation, and submit it to Schoology. This assignment will not be due for a couple of weeks since it will take time for students to complete. Next week, I will show students how to submit the assignment.

Have a wonderful evening!

Homework:

  1. Answer one of the reflection questions about the Behavior Matrix on Schoology. Then, respond to another classmate by the end of the day on Friday.
  2. Bring 1 item that represents you to our next Zoom meeting
  3. Work on your Summer Learning Book Talk Assignment

Remember, you MUST email me when you complete something late Otherwise I won’t know to go back and grade it. Please try to get your work made up to the best of your ability.

I have received MANY emails over the course of my maternity leave and it is taking me a while to respond to them all. Please be patient, I will be caught up by the end of the day today. I have posted your last assignments for the to iLearn and Google Classroom.

Anything before then was considered “enrichment” and students that completed those assignments on time earned a score. If you hear from your advisory teacher you have missing work in my class, you need to check student connect for your missing assignments and then email me to let me know you finished your work! You also need to tell me which assignment you completed and be specific. If you are talking about IXL, you need to tell me which lesson you worked on. Otherwise, I cannot grade your assignment. The same goes for your Guided Questions, Family Friday Activity, and Discussion Posts. If you don’t tell me the week you made up, I won’t know what to grade.

This Week’s Assignments:

You may also use The Giver book during the quiz to help you. I recommend looking the answers up to confirm them!!

Many students did not take the first two quizzes on The Giver during the scheduled time. For this reason, I am allowing students to make-up this work on Monday, June 8th. The quizzes open at 12:01 am and close at 11:59 pm. The retake is built into the quiz because you have 3 chances to get all questions correct (except true/false).
