Monday, April 15, 2019

In Language Arts today the students spent time working on their folktale project.

They were also given the opportunity to go to the library.

While groups are working on the project, I am pulling students to assess writing, review NWEA and MSTEP Goals, as well as talk about year-long averages.  The students will be coming home with all of this information as it relates to Language Arts once I am done meeting with them.  For some students, they will be bringing their information home today. Others will not be doing this until Thursday. My goal is to meet with everyone by the end of the week.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Thursday (Since we don’t have school on Friday)
  3. Folktale Project Presentations NEXT Wednesday, April 24th

Friday, April 12, 2019

The students were given time in Language Arts today to catch up on their work.  They worked on Moby Max, their IBC Chart, and their Folktale Project.  If the IBC Chart was not completed by the time they left class, it was assigned as homework. If Moby Max is not completed, it is a late assignment.

I was very disappointed in the amount of students who did not complete their work. Please remember, late work should be submitted as an emergency situation, not the standard. I am only accepting three late assignments between now and the end of the year. It is important to learn to turn assignments in on time. At this point, every student in my class should have an A+ 100% as their grade. If that is not the case, it is because a student is not doing their work or following directions for an assignment.

Have a great weekend and make sure to get caught up and don’t forget Monday is our library day!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. IBC Chart due Monday

In Language Arts today the students continued to practice analyzing a folktale by looking at the story, Rumplestiltskin. I have attached the video we watched to this blog post. The students were also assigned a folktale project. Over the next week and a half, the students will be working in groups of three or four to to analyze a folktale for its literary elements as well as determine which elements make it a folktale. This project will have two parts, a powerpoint presentation and a scrapbook page focusing on the theme.  They will be provided with scrapbook paper for the theme component. We will be presenting these projects in class on Wednesday, April 24th. They will be given time in class every day between now and then to work on their project. For homework tonight, the students were asked to form groups and select which story they would like their project to focus on. Here are the book options:

  1. O’Sullivan Stew
  2. Paul Bunyan: The Giant Lumberjack
  3. Why the Sky is Far Away
  4. The Three Billy Goats Gruff

During Language Arts today the students were given the directions to One-Pagers Seven and Eight. I have added these directions to the blog. They will both be due by June 7th at the latest which is the last day all assignments for the year will be accepted. The students were also given a book order form for The Giver. We will be reading this novel starting at the end of April and it will be our focus for the rest of the school year. School copies will be available but if a student wants to have their own copy to write in, I will be ordering books on Friday. I have attached the order form to this blog post.

In terms of learning, the students continued to learn about folktales by practicing identifying folktale elements in the story, Caps for Sale.

The students also continued to practice passage-based writing by identifying the theme and main ideas in the poems we looked at yesterday. They also spent time talking to the text for the directions we will be using to write about these poems tomorrow. If they did not finish this in class, it was assigned as homework.

Lastly, the students spent time learning about prefixes, suffixed, and root words.

Have a great evening!

Welcome back! We are in the home stretch of the school year and time is moving quickly! We are starting a new marking period which means students are allowed to turn in three late assignments between now and the end of the school year without losing points. All assignments for the year will be due by Friday, June 7th. No assignments will be accepted the last week of the school year.

In Language Arts today the students started a new unit.  We will be focusing on folktale analysis over the course of the next couple of weeks. Today we learned about common folktale elements and the various types of folktales.

The students also spent time in class reading and talking to the text for a few poems.  Later in the week, we will be using these poems for a writing assignment. If they did not finish this in class, it was assigned as homework.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. 5 Read Theory Quizzes due Friday
  3. Moby Max: Punctuation due Friday

This is a very busy week at Bryant so I have a few announcements to add to today’s blog post.

  1. Math and Literacy Night is Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:30pm. This is a fun event for the whole family filled with stations to promote reading and math. One of the stations is called Read Aloud. At this station, sixth graders are invited to read the personal narrative they wrote in Language Arts last marking period to an audience. This is worth ten extra credit points in Language Arts. Students must sign up in advance in order to attend so that their essay can be pulled from their file and because there are a limited amount of time slots available. The sign up sheet is on the bulletin board outside of Mrs. Dailing’s room. Even if you do not want to read your essay, you can still come and have fun with your family and friends!
  2. Parent Teacher Conferences are Thursday from 3:30 to 6:30pm. These will  NOT be student-led. Ms. Taha, Ms. Jones, Mr. Peterson, and I will be calling home to speak with families we would like to meet with.  All families are welcome to attend, even if they don’t receive a phone call however, the conference is not required. Once again, the families we need to speak with will be contacted prior to conferences. Conferences are individual and no time is scheduled so families may be waiting in line to speak with teachers for a while. Ms. Taha and I will be meeting in her room to speak with families about Math and Language Arts. This is room 41.
  3. The Bryant Book Fair will be taking place this week. My Block Three students will be going during class tomorrow. Blocks One and Two will be attending on Thursday. The fair will be open during Math and Literacy Night as well as Parent Teacher Conferences.

In Language Arts today the students finished watching The Prince and the Pauper. They also did SSR. Since it was Spirit Week this week, we had an assembly and all classes were shortened.

At this point, grades have been updated based on everything I have received.

Have a fun, safe Spring Break!

Homework:

  1. Have 2/3 of your 7th Good Fit Book read before you return from break
  2. 5 Read Theory quizzes due Monday, April 8th

In Language Arts today the students watched the movie version of The Prince and the Pauper. We did not have time to finish this in class so we will do it tomorrow. While watching, the students were asked to fill out a double bubble map and compare the play to the movie.

The students also spent time in class editing sentences for quotation marks.

At this point, I am still working on updating grades.  If you are looking at your grade and something seems off, I am probably still working on grading that assignment. Please be patient with me as I am trying to finish up. I promise to post to the blog and send a Remind when I am done.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Tomorrow
  3. Moby Max: Punctuation due Friday, April 12th

Wednesday, March 27, 2019

In Language Arts today the students took their unit test on “The Prince and the Pauper”. I am doing my best to have grades updated as quickly as possible.  My goal is to be done by Friday evening. If an assignment is marked missing, it could have been turned in late and I will be getting to that last or it was turned in without a name, which I will figure out at some point during the week. If an assignment is blank, that means I am in the middle of grading that assignment and putting scores in.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Friday
  3. Moby Max: Punctuation due Friday, April 12th
