In Language Arts today the students continued to learn about author’s purpose. Today we did a sorting activity where they had to determine if statements were persuading, informing, or entertaining.

The students also learned how to express themselves by talking to the text while they read. As a class, we read the poem, “On Turning Ten”, and expressed our thoughts about what we understood while we read by discussing the poem and writing our thoughts on the side of the paper. This will be something the students are expected to do while they read at Bryant Middle School. This strategy is used for close reading in all classes, not just Language Arts.

We also continued to learn about other text features we may find when reading that help us better understand a text.

As of today, students are officially allowed to check out a book from our classroom library. If a child would like to check out a book, they need to notify me and I will record which book they have. They are responsible for letting me know when they return the book so I can take their name off of the list. If a book is lost, damaged, or destroyed, they are responsible for paying for the book since these are books I have purchased with my own money and would like to have for other students to read in the future. At this point, students are expected to have a good fit book that they are reading at home for 100 minutes per week (20 minutes/five nights a week).

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
