Welcome to the second half of Sixth Grade!  During our half day, the students reviewed what it means to select a good fit book and then we went to the library.  The students also reviewed classroom rules and expectations.  Lastly, I explained that in order to prepare students for Seventh Grade, I would be raising some of my expectations.  I am posting these expectations to the blog so that families can be aware of what they are too.

Students receive eight points each week for submitting their reading logs.  This will continue to be the case for the remainder of the school year.  Their responses will now be graded based upon accuracy as opposed to completion.  This means that students who are giving a partial response will now be getting points deducted as opposed to receiving full credit like they have been all year. Additionally, students will only be allowed to turn in four late assignments each marking period.  If students turn in a fifth late assignment in the same marking period, the assignment will not be worth points.  At this point, our student should be comfortable with their school environment to be prepared for class each day. This rule also helps prepare students for the expectations of Seventh Grade teachers.

The vocabulary books that were purchased before the break are now being used.  We did our first lesson in the vocabulary book this morning.  The students will have two weeks to work on the activities in class and at home.  By the end of the two weeks, each student will be required to have taken their vocabulary quiz.  If students wish to take the quiz earlier than the allotted two weeks, they are more than welcome to do so.  These books allow students to get additional practice with word work during Daily 5 at their own pace.  The activities that correspond with the unit will be worth 32 points formative.  Each quiz will vary in the amount of points they are worth but each one will be graded as summative.

Have a great evening!
