Chromebook Needs

Posted on

Good afternoon everyone! I hope you are doing well, while staying safe, healthy, and home (when possible). As you know, Chromebooks were distributed to the families who needed them as the distant learning process started. Then, with the orders put in place, only a waitlist was continued and distribution was put on hold. Fortunately, Whitmore-Bolles is able to do another distribution. Initially, each family was only able to receive one Chromebook, but with the needs changing, each student is able to check one out if needed. The students will only be able check them out from their own school (elementary, middle, or high school location). Due to restrictions and protocol, the next distribution is currently being set up. If you are in need of a Chromebook (one or more than one if you have more than one student completing distant learning), please let me know, so I can add your information to the list. If you have already been in contact with me, you will be all set. Thank you for your response if needed!

Google Hangout/Meet Tomorrow

Good afternoon! I posted this in Google Classroom, but wanted to share with you, so you can encourage your child to join us!

Boys and Girls,
Tomorrow (Wednesday), I am going to hold a Google Hangout to check in with all of you. If you are able to meet with us, please join at 3:00 p.m. I will post the code for you to join just before our call starts. Please think of anything you would like to tell me and of any questions that you have so far on this week’s assignments. I miss you and can’t wait to see you!

Moving Forward with Learning in 3rd Grade

Posted on

Dear 3rd Grade Families,

As we move forward in this unprecedented time of online learning, the district has created a plan which sets guidelines and expectations for teachers and students to follow for the remainder of the year.

Going forward, the expectations of online learning will be shifting from enrichment activities to a continuation of new learning so students can stay on track as much as possible with grade level learning.

New assignments will be posted at the beginning of each week and will be due on Fridays. Students may submit work throughout the week as they finish their tasks rather than wait until Friday to submit all of their work. As work is submitted, it will be checked and feedback will be provided. If a task is incomplete or if mistakes need to be fixed, the assignment will be returned without a grade and it will be expected that students will fix and resubmit that task.

Starting this week, student work will be graded according to the effort used and completion of assignments posted.These grades will be reflected on the 4th quarter report card. Each assignment will be given a 3 point value. Students who complete a given assignment on time using best effort following all expectations given in the directions will earn a 3. Assignments turned in late, or have missing parts even after being returned for fixing will receive a 2. Work that is not finished and has many missing parts and is not best effort will get a 1.

3= Meeting expectations

2= Progressing

1= Limited progress

These are the phrases that will be used on the 4th quarter report card.

Along with weekly assignments, there will also often be a survey sent out for students to complete. This will be used as a way to stay in touch with students and it will help give me an idea of what students may need help with so I can plan topics for our Google Hangouts.

Google Hangouts will be scheduled each week as a way to help answer instructional questions students have with lessons for the week. I will soon send out more details in regards to a schedule with these to help best accommodate needs.

The district has provided time allotments for each grade level for the suggested amount of time students should be spending each day on each subject. It is suggested that grades 3-5 spend 20 minutes/subject each day. This is just a guideline and might not be manageable for all families. Please do what works for your family. As we begin our next steps in the continuation of learning, please know that I am here to help. Your child is so important to me and  I am understanding, so please always contact me with any questions, concerns, or to make me aware of any specific situations/needs. I know this is all an ongoing learning process, but we are in this together!

With safest and healthiest wishes,

Mrs. Danielle Travis

Update and Epic Reading Login

Posted on

Hello families! As always, I truly hope each of you are doing well, safe, and healthy. As many of you know, we are in the process of finalizing the plan moving forward with distance learning. While the district’s plan has been submitted to Wayne County RESA, we are still working out some of the details. We will share more information soon, as we have been attending meetings and PLCs to work through the information. Thank you to everyone who has been completing learning through our Google Classroom and other learning platforms, such as Zearn and IXL. Please reach out with any questions, concerns, or if you need to make me aware of specific circumstances. I’m here to help and miss all of my students and their families!

I know many students have already used the login information from their planners earlier this year, but just in case they haven’t I am going to share the code for distance learning. Epic is a wonderful online tool that provides the students with a lot of books and learning videos. All of the students know how to do use this site because they have used it in class during Daily 5 time. Since reading is still an essential part of daily learning, this provides the students with additional books, some of which will be optional reading and others that can be used for assignments. Please take advantage of this resource.
