Monday 3/6/17

This week we are finishing up our social studies unit.  An online study guide will be posted tomorrow.  We are also finishing up our math unit- the math study guide is going home tonight and is in your child’s backpack.  The math test is this Wednesday, the social studies test is this Thursday.

Homework:

  1. Study your math study guide.  The math test is Wednesday!
  2. Complete a weekly spelling activity.

A Student Progress Report is coming home this week covering social studies.  I have highlighted the missing information including your child’s current grade and if they are missing any assignments.  If they have missing assignments they must be completed and returned by Friday 3/10/17.  No exceptions.  If they have missing assignments the grade at the top will not include it and therefore will change- for the better or the worse (if they don’t turn it in).

Every parent MUST sign the progress report and return it tomorrow.  If it is not returned your child will call home until it is brought back to school.  The assignment descriptions are posted below so they you can make it up.

Schools-past and present assignment social studies

Timeline of personal Events- use the 2nd timeline with 9 events.  Each event must include a picture (a photo or you can draw it), a caption, and the year it happened. https://squareheadteachers.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/blank-timeline-templates.pdf

Comparing the past and present We read “The Oxcart man” in school.  Students chose one thing to contrast between what happened in the past verses what happens in today’s world.  You can choose things such as “How people cook”, “How people travel”, “what clothes people wear” etc.  I have included notes from the book to help you.

ALSO a big THANK YOU for the parent volunteers we have had into our classroom to read so far. The children are loving it and are so excited to hear there family come in and read to their classmates.  If you have not signed up there are still slots available.  I have extra calendars if you need another one.

Friday 3-3-17

March is Reading Month

Today your child brought home a calendar of available dates this month for volunteer readers.  I would love for you to sign up to read to the second graders.  This opportunity is available to all parents as well as grandparents and extended family such as aunts and uncles.  You can read in English or Arabic- your choice.

The total reading time will be 15 minutes long.  Please be on time because we can not run late; we go to lunch at 12:00 and we get ready to go home at 3:30.

There are opportunities to read from 11:45-12:00 and 3:15-3:30.  The times available reflect our classroom specials schedule and cannot be adjusted.

If you sign up for the 11:45 slot you can stay and have lunch with your child if your schedule allows.

If you have more than one person from your family who wants to come in and read that is fine (for example, dad and mom; or grandpa and mom); write that on the calendar and when it is returned I will sign your family up for more than 1 day.

Please write a 1, 2, and 3 on the calendar date beside your prefered time (1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice).  I will do my best to accommodate your 1st choice if possible.  Please include the reader’s name and phone number so I can call you to confirm your assigned day.
