Detroit Symphony Orchestra

Concert Description:

See below- a free family event for all!

On Sunday, September 22 at 3 PM, the DSO will give a free performance at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, sponsored by the DTE Energy Foundation. Across all of its 2019-2020 programming, the DSO celebrates the centennial of Orchestra Hall, built in 1919 as the first permanent home of the orchestra. From 1941-1951, Orchestra Hall became the Paradise Theatre, a celebrated venue for jazz and blues artists. The 2019-2020 season also marks the 20th anniversary of the DSO’s Paradise Jazz Series, which takes its name from Orchestra Hall’s ten-year history as the Paradise Theatre.

Join conductor Jacob Joyce as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra celebrates the centennial of Orchestra Hall, featuring works performed during the Orchestra’s first season at Orchestra Hall. The DSO pays tribute to the hall’s jazz roots with a performance of Duke Ellington Fantasy, a nod to the Paradise Theatre’s earliest concerts, which included a date featuring Duke Ellington just four weeks after the venue opened.

Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!

A picture of Mrs. Schafer's meet the teacher newsletter.

Hello OL Smith Family,

My name is Megan Timpf and I teach 8th grade English Language Arts. Mrs. Schafer will be co-teaching with me during first, second, and sixth hour classes. If you would like to learn a bit about us, please see the “Meet the Teacher” newsletters pictured above. You will also receive essential school information, such as the syllabus this week. Please keep an eye out for it!

Summer Learning

Students were expected to read three books over the summer and will have an opportunity to present one book in class tomorrow. We reviewed the expectations for the report in class last week. There will be a written and an oral component.

Free and Reduced Lunch

Please ask your child to bring home a free and reduced lunch form. Even if your child received free and reduced lunch last year, you must complete the form every year. If you are unsure if you are eligible, fill the form out any way! There is no penalty for doing so. You only need to complete the form once for all children in the family. If you have any questions, please contact the main office at (313) 827-2800.

Planners

Planners were passed out in advisory last week. Your student is expected to have a planner with them at all times during the school day. The planner contains all school policies, procedures, their passes to leave class, and students are expected to write their assignments down every day. All children get ONE free planner. If it is lost, your child may purchase a new planner in the office for $5.

Picture Day, IDs, and Yearbooks

Picture Day was last Thursday, August 29th. If you order pictures online, please keep a record of your order! Last year, the company did not send a list of who ordered yearbooks and it caused some confusion and frustration. Having a record will decrease the confusion and frustration should this company error occur again this year.

All students present on Picture Day received their picture ID last Thursday. Should your child lose their picture ID, they can purchase a new ID card in the office for $5.

We know that is a lot of information at one time, so please email us with any questions or clarifications. If we do not have an answer, we will try to point you in the right direction. Ms. Timpf’s email is timpfm1@dearbornschools.org and Ms. Schafer’s is schafej@dearbornschools.org. Feel free to contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have. Please remember to include us both in all communications, so we are on the same page. This information, as well as a bit more about us, is provided in the newsletter attached to this email.

We look forward to working with you this school year!

Megan Timpf and Jeanette Schafer

Briarhill World Tour

Hello,

Some students had the opportunity to speak with some students in Texas today. They made a blog post with some of the questions and responses that were asked. We are hoping to complete our own World Tour and are thankful for the Briarhill students for giving us a call. We hope to use the experience to iron out the details of our own tour in May.

Dearborn SHINES Survey- Participants Needed

Dearborn SHINES for Healthy Kids!

You are being asked to be in a research study that focuses on the evaluation of the Dearborn SHINES healthy eating and physical activity program because you currently are a parent/guardian of a child in a Dearborn Public elementary or middle school. This study is being conducted at Wayne State University in collaboration with Beaumont Health. The estimated number of study participants to be enrolled at Wayne State University and the participating schools is about 400 parents. Please read this form and ask any questions you may have before agreeing to be in the study.

In this research study, we are evaluating the implementation process of Dearborn SHINES for Healthy Kids! as well as the outcomes of the program adoption.  Specifically, we are interested in evaluating the family engagement components of this programming and we are interested in gaining your opinions about the family programming you have participated in as well as your feedback and perceptions about how members of your family have participated in the program.

If you wish to participate, please CLICK HERE to take the short survey.

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!

Hello OL Smith Family,

My name is Megan Timpf and I teach 8th grade English Language Arts. If you would like to learn a bit about me, please see my “Meet the Teacher” newsletter pictured above. You will also receive essential school information, such as the syllabus and picture day form, this week. Please keep an eye out for it!

Summer Learning

Students were expected to read three books over the summer and will have an assignment regarding these books at the beginning of the school year. There will be a written and an oral component. Students will receive information about this assignment by Thursday, August 30th.

Some students were also assigned summer workbooks based on grades and test scores. I will speak to students who were assigned the workbook on Monday, as my list is on my school computer. I will also send an email reminder to parents of students who were assigned these workbooks on Monday afternoon. The workbooks will be turned in on Thursday, August 30th.

All students were made aware of summer learning requirements last year, as I visited Ms. Poisson’s and Ms. Beydoun’s classes in June.

Planners

Planners will be handed out in advisory on the second day of school.

Picture Day is Thursday, August 30th! If you would like to order pictures, ask your student for the form. You can either fill out the paper form and your student must bring it with payment to school on the 30th, or you may use the link provided on the form to order online. If you order online, please keep a record of your order! Last year, the company did not send a list of who ordered yearbooks and it caused some confusion and frustration. Having a record will decrease the confusion and frustration should this company error occur again this year.

All students will have their picture taken, even if they are not ordering photos, and will receive their picture ID on Thursday. Should your child lose their picture ID, they can purchase a new ID card in the office for $5.

Yearbooks can be purchased along with photo packages. Only some photo packages include a yearbook! Please review all packages and add-ons available to ensure you get what you would like to purchase, including a yearbook. If you do not select a package with a yearbook, you will not receive one in June.

I know that is a lot of information at one time, so please email me with any questions or clarifications. If I do not have an answer, I will try to point you in the right direction.

I look forward to working with you this school year!

Megan Timpf
