In order to complete the in class assignment for tomorrow, students must complete their notes at home tonight. Students are required to review their notes at home for a minimum of 10 minutes every day. Please talk with them about their notes!
Students! Here are the links to the articles if you need to finish your notes.
Students began this week with learning about how to locate arguments in advertisements. We will use this knowledge of arguments to begin working on the parts of an argumentative essay. Students will work in partners to become experts on one part of the argumentative essay. It will be their job to create a poster to place around the room that will teach their classmates about it during a gallery walk.
Please have students check StudentConnect. Many have missing assignments! The end of the cardmarking is October 14th.
Students this week are focusing on text features and Cornell Notes! We have spent the first half of this week defining and locating text features in articles. We have used the text features as a pre-reading strategy to get an idea about what we are going to read.
Later this week, students will learn about how to use Cornell Notes in Language Arts and will have the opportunity to practice. Friday, there will be a text features quiz!
Parents: Students have been doing their pre-assessments for the school year, including an argumentative essay and NWEA. During their pre-assessments, we have been discussing the importance of creativity. We have done this through watching a TedTalk and reading an article.
Students: You completed reciprocal viewing notes last Friday in class about the film. This week, you are reading and annotating an article. Once the annotation is complete, you are creating banners that represent the importance of creativity. The annotation instructions and assignment are online. You should be able to log into your school email, go to Google Classroom, and complete the assignment by Monday at home. The banner is hand-drawn and will be due the same day. Assignment instructions for the banner are also on Google Classroom. If you need help remembering how to annotate online, this video may help.
If you are concerned about completing yuor assignment on time, talk to me tomorrow or email me by 8:00 pm Saturday to ask for an extension. I will not grant extensions after this time.
Here are the instructions for the Academic Goals Pennant. If you have any questions, please email me at timpfm1@dearbornschools.org . Due on September 14th, by the end of bellwork.
Academic Goals Pennant
Cut construction paper into a triangle. It should about the same size as your notebook.
On one side, create a college logo. You may choose to draw the logo or cut it out of paper.
If the logo does not already include the college name, write the name on the front on your pennant.
On the back of your pennant, write “My language arts goal for this school year is…” and complete the sentence. Next, write “Three Steps I Will Use To Accomplish My Goal” and list the three things you want to do this year to help reach your academic goal.
Reflection Component: On a separate sheet of loose-leaf paper, answer the following questions. Remember to be thoughtful! One sentence answers are probably not well-thought out enough.
How will my plan (your three steps from your pennant) help me achieve my goal this school year?
How will achieving my goal for this year help me in high school?
How will achieving my goal for this year help me in college OR in my career?
What can Ms. Timpf do to help me follow my plan (your three steps) to achieve my goal?
My name is Ms. Megan Timpf and I am thrilled to be your Seventh/Eighth Grade English Teacher. This is my second year at O. L. Smith, my second year teaching, and I am very excited to teach and learn from all of you.
This is my family! My wonderful parents are Don and Mary. My mom is a teacher at Geer Park in Dearborn! And I have a brother, Ben, who you will repeatedly hear me call a “Creepo Kid.”I also have four pets. The two dogs are Cooper and Baxter and the cats are Catherine and Orion. Finally, I have “my girls.” I’m not a mom but I worked as a nanny through collage watching these girls. Emma is only 6 in the top right photo and Sophia is a new born in the top left. They are now 12 and 3 years old (Center). I try to spend as much time with them as possible!I was fortunate enough to perform with the Edsel Ford Theatre Department for 4 years and use to dance competitively. I also enjoyed forensics, or competitive speaking, in college. Nowadays, I spend almost all my free time playing roller derby. We are currently ranked 34th in the world and will be playing in the Women’s Flat-Track Derby Association Playoffs this year. Wish us luck!
Just a reminder that your title submissions are due by tomorrow, 6/2! Please email them to me by then! Keep them school-appropriate and remember, they should be catchy, interesting, and truly represent the 8th grade!
