Literacy Activity
Since today marks the first day of Ramadan, here is a wonderful children’s story about Ramandan:
I encourage you to watch the story with your child. After the story is over, I encourage you to talk to them about what Ramadan is and the importance of it.
Math Activity
For today’s math activity, I encourage the children to practice sorting/organizing items at home. Sorting/organizing is an important concept for preschoolers to practice because it helps them understand the similarities and differences in items, which can help them with more complicated math skills in the future. For more information about the importance of sorting/organizing, I encourage you to read this informational blog post, “Why is classifying and sorting important for young children?” https://www.neskkids.com.au/blogs/news/classifying-and-sorting
Here is how your child can practice sorting/organizing at home:
- Find items in your house for your child to sort/organize. These items can be silverware, coins, crackers, toys, clothing items (socks, shirts, and pants), jewelry, and much more.
- Ask your child to sort/organize the items you chose. They can sort/organize them by size, color, shape, what the item(s) is/are used for, and texture.
When your child is done sorting/organizing their items, ask them about their classifications. Here are some suggestions for questions:
- “Tell me about how you organized your items. What were you thinking about?”
- “How can you organize your items a different way?”
For extra practice, here is a fun sorting/organizing and counting interactive video:
Work Time
At school, the children engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. This is a time for the children to engage with their friends, explore materials in the classroom, and participate creatively in activities that are of interest to the child. To accomplish this, we use a plan, do, review process which we call: “Planning Time, Work Time, and Recall.” You can do this at home! Here is how it works:
- Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with. Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.
- Work Time (45-60 minutes): Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS. Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.
وقت العمل : يجب أن لا يستعمل الأولاد الإلكترونيات . يستطيع الأولاد استخدام الألعاب التي تساعدهم في التخيل و البناء و الإبداع - Clean Up: When Work Time is over, encourage your child to clean up the area(s) they played in.
- Recall (5-10 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)
Outdoor Exploration
Unfortunately, it looks like we may be seeing some rain today. If the weather looks good, I encourage you and your child to try to go outside for at least 60 minutes. As mentioned, you can go outside once a day for 60 minutes OR you can go outside twice a day for 20-30 minutes each time.
If the weather is not good, here are some indoor dance activities your child can do:
Jack Hartmann: Let’s Move
Jack Hartmann: I Can Move My Body Like Anything
Koo Koo Kanga Roo: Milkshake
Patty Shukla: Jump!
