Literacy Activity

For today’s literacy activity, we are going to learn about the letter, “W, w.” Here are some videos about the letter, “W, w”:

When your child is done watching the videos, I encourage them to do these three things:

  1. Find three things in your house that start with the letter, “W, w.”
  2. Write the letter, “W, w,” three times (both capital and lower case) (Please send me pictures of your child’s writing on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org)
  3. Practice saying the sound for, “W, w.”

Here are three things in my house that start with the letter, “W, w”:

Math Activity

We are going to continue learning our teen numbers. Today’s number is 15. 15 means one ten and five more. Here is a model of the number 15:

First, encourage your child to watch this video of 15:

When the video is over, I encourage your child to do these two things:

  1. Count 15 items in your house (examples: 15 forks, 15 coins, 15 steps, etc.).
  2. Write the number 15 three times (Please send me pictures of your child’s writing on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org)

Work Time

I encourage your child to engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. To keep the consistency with what we do at school, I encourage you to follow the Plan, Do, Review process. Here is the Work Time process:

  • Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.
  • Work Time (45-60 minutes): Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.
  • Clean Up: When Work Time is over, encourage your child to clean up the area(s) they played in.
  • Recall (5-10 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Fun Work Time Activity: Make a Puppet!
Do you have any old socks laying around or any unused paper bags? If you do, you and your child can make puppets with them! After making a puppet, you and your child can have a puppet show!

Outdoor Exploration

We may be seeing some rain today, but it will hopefully clear up later in the day! If you can, I encourage you and your child to go outside for at least 60 minutes a day. If you’re unable to go outside, here are some indoor activities you can do:

Cosmic Kids Yoga: Click here to access Cosmic Kids Yoga! There are many yoga activities you and your child can do to stretch and relax your mind.

Literacy Activity

For our literacy activity today, we are going to do a combination of a reading and writing activity. For this activity, we are going to read, If You Give a Pig a Pancake, by Laura Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond (read aloud by Mr. Liepe)

After you and your child are done reading the story, ask your child what they think would happen if they gave a pig a pancake.

Encourage them to verbally tell you their story. When they are done telling you their story, encourage them to write their story in their notebooks. (I encourage you to send pictures of your child’s story to me on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org).

Math Activity

How many letters are in your child’s first name? Let’s count! Here are the directions for today’s activities:

Step 1: Encourage your child to write their first name:

Step 2: Encourage your child to count how many letter are in their first name by making dots OR writing the numbers under each letter as you count (for this image, I showed both ways):

For more of a challenge, your child can count the letters in both their first AND last name:

Work Time

I encourage your child to engage in play without electronics for at least 60 minutes a day using the Plan, Work Time, and Recall process.

  • Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. Hello and Happy Wednesday! We are almost to the weekend! Before we start today’s activities, here are some announcements:

Phone Calls and Personal Activities for Thursday, May 14
Mrs. Askar and I will be calling all families who scheduled a Thursday call tomorrow from 12-3 PM. We will be calling from a blocked number, so please do not be alarmed. If you miss our call, we will leave a message. If you would like for us to call you back, please send me a message on Remind.

If you have a child who is 4 years old OR you know someone who has a 4 year old child, and would like to enroll them in preschool, Dearborn Public Schools offers a Free Preschool Program. If you are interested in this program, please see the following links for more information:

Literacy Activity

We are going to continue our learning with reading comprehension. One way to read with comprehension is to identify characters and discuss their actions and/or feelings in a story. Characters are the people, animals, and/or animated objects in a story.

Today, we are going to read, Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak. First, encourage your child to read the story on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xex-63PNXrc

Pause the video after each page and talk to your child about who and what they see. Support your child’s observations by responding to them. For example, if your child is talking about one of the monsters, you can say something like, “Yes, I also see the monster! They have big teeth and they are trying to scare the boy!”

After you are done reading the book, encourage your child to draw their favorite character. They can draw this in their writing journal or on a piece of paper. Talk to your child about the character and why it is their favorite. I’d love to see your child’s drawings! You can send pictures to me on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org.

Math Lesson

Math can be done using every day house hold items. A fun way your child can practice their math skills at home is helping with the laundry! Gather these items in your house:

  • Shirts
  • Pants
  • Socks
  • OPTIONAL: Doll clothes (if you have any)

Lay out the items on the floor and ask your child to count all the clothing items. Then ask your child to…

  • Count all the shirts
  • Count all the pants
  • Count all the socks

Last, ask your child which clothing item you have the most of and why. You can also ask them if they have the same amount of clothing items (for example, you may have the same amount of pants and shirts).

Fun Work Time Activity: Chalk Drawings!
Today is going to be a beautiful day to go outside and draw with chalk! What will your child draw? Will they draw the flowers? The sun? The sky? If you’re unable to go outside today, your child can draw with chalk on paper!

Outdoor Exploration

It looks like we will have some nice weather today! As always, I  encourage you and your child to go outside for at least 60 minutes today. The Dearborn Public Schools parks and sports fields are still closed. However, today is a great day to enjoy a walk or play in the yard!

Literacy Activity

Before the school closure, the students were working on rhyming words. Rhyming words are words that sound similar, but are not the same. For example, the words, “dog,” and, “log,” rhyme because they have the same, “og,” sound at the end. These words are not the same, however, they sound similar.

Rhyming words are important because it helps children develop phonological awareness skills. Phonological awareness is a term that means to identify and manipulate parts of oral language. For more information about phonological awareness, click here to access a wonderful article called, “Phonological Awareness: What You Need to Know,” by Kelli Johnson, MA.

For this activity, your child will identify rhyming words. First, encourage your child to watch, “Hickory Dicory Dock”:

After your child is done watching the video, encourage your child to identify the words that rhyme in the song. You can also ask your child if specific words rhyme. For example, you can ask, “Does ‘tick’ and ‘tock’ rhyme?” or, “Does ‘dock’ and ‘tock’ rhyme?”

Math Activity

For a few weeks now, we were working on identifying shapes. The shapes we reviewed were two-dimensional (2-D) shapes. These shapes are flat shapes. Today, we are going to learn about three-dimensional (3-D) shapes. These shapes “pop out” or, have depth.

First, encourage your child to watch Jack Hartmann’s video about 3-D shapes:

After the video is done, encourage your child to find 3-D shapes around your house or in the neighborhood.

Work Time

I encourage your child to engage in play without electronics for at least 60 minutes a day using the Plan, Work Time, and Recall process.

Fun Work Time Activity: Texture Activity
I encourage your child to go around your house and/or outside and feel various textures. Texture describes how something feels. Here is a great and short texture PowerPoint for you to view:

I encourage your child to participate in the Texture Scavenger Hunt activity on slide 3.

Outdoor Exploration

It looks like we will have some nice weather today! As always, I  encourage you and your child to go outside for at least 60 minutes today. The Dearborn Public Schools parks and sports fields are still closed. However, today is a great day to enjoy a walk or play in the yard!

Mrs. Askar and I will be calling families who scheduled a Thursday phone call from 12-3 PM. We will be calling from a blocked phone number, so please do not be alarmed. If you miss our call, we will leave a message. If you would like a call back, please message me on Remind.
I will send your child’s personal activities on Remind later this morning.

4 Year Old Preschool Registration
If you have a child who is 4 years old OR you know someone who has a 4 year old child, and would like to enroll them in preschool, Dearborn Public Schools offers a Free Preschool Program. If you are interested in this program, please see the following links for more information:

Literacy Activity

For today’s literacy activity, we are going to learn about the letter, “T, t.” First, encourage your child to watch the Jack Hartmann video about the letter, “T, t”:

After watching the video, I encourage you and your child to do the following:

  • Find three things in your house that start with the letter, “T, t.”
  • Write the letter, “T, t,” both capital and lower case three times.
  • Practice saying the letter, “T, t,” sound.

Here are three things in my house that start with the letter, “T, t”:

Math Activity

We are going to continue our learning with our teen numbers. Today, the students are going to learn about the number, 12. 12 is ten and two more. First, encourage your child to watch this video about the number 12:

After the video is over, I encourage your child to do two things:

  1. Count 12 items in your house (examples: 12 forks, 12 coins, 12 steps, etc.).
  2. Write the number 12 three times.

Fun Work Time Activity: Build a Fort
The children love to build at school! Why not build at home with couch cushions, pillows, and blankets? I encourage you and your child to build a fort you can play in! Will your fort be tall? Will it be long? Will it fit your whole family inside? Let your imagination run wild!

Outdoor Exploration

It looks like we will have some nice weather today! As always, I  encourage you and your child to go outside for at least 60 minutes today. The Dearborn Public Schools parks and sports fields are still closed. However, today is a great day to enjoy a walk or play in the yard!

Activities for Wednesday, May 6, 2020

Announcements

Hello and happy Wednesday! Here are some announcements before we start today’s activities:

Phone Calls and Personal Activities for Thursday
Tomorrow, Mrs. Askar and I will be calling families who scheduled a Thursday call from 12-3 PM. We will be calling from a blocked phone number, so please do not be alarmed. If you are unable to answer our call, we will leave a message. If you need us to call you back, please send me a message on Remind.
I will be sending your child’s personal activities tomorrow morning on Remind.

Mr. Liepe, a preschool teacher at Whitmore Bolles Elementary, has some wonderful read-alouds on his YouTube channel! For today’s literacy activity, we will be listening to his read-aloud of, Harold and the Purple Crayon, by Crockett Johnson:

Read-aloud by Mr. Liepe

After the story is done, I encourage your child to do these three things:

  1. Take a purple crayon and draw a story in their writing journal.
  2. After they are done drawing their story, encourage them to tell you what their story is about.
  3. Encourage them to label the items in their story with the first letter of the item. (For example, if your child drew an apple, they should label the apple with, “A.”)

Math Activity

For today’s math activity, the students are going to continue their learning about shapes. Shapes are made up of many sides and vertices (corners). Some shapes have many sides and vertices (squares, rectangles, triangles, etc.) while some shapes have none (circles and ovals).

First, encourage your child to watch this video:

When the video is over, show your child these shapes:

Circle
Triangle
Square
Rectangle
Rhombus/Diamond

Talk to your child about the sides and vertices that make these shapes. Here are some sample questions you can ask them:

  • “How many sides does this shape have?”
  • “How many vertices/corners does this shape have?” (NOTE: If your child is having a challenging time with the word, “vertices,” you can call them, “corners.”)
  • “Which shapes have the same number of sides and vertices/corners? Which shapes have the smallest number of sides and vertices/corners?”

Work Time

I encourage your child to engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. To keep the consistency with what we do at school, I encourage you to follow the Plan, Do, Review process. Here is the Work Time process:

Fun Work Time Activity: Have a Parade!
Having a parade is a fun way to move your body and make music! If you have any musical instruments at home, I encourage you and your child to march around the house and play music. If you do not have musical instruments at home, you can still make music by using pots, pans, and spoons!

Outdoor Exploration

It looks like we will see some decent weather today! As always, I  encourage you and your child to go outside for at least 60 minutes today. The Dearborn Public Schools parks and sports fields are still closed. However, today is a great day to enjoy a walk or play in the yard!
