Literacy Activity
Yesterday, we wrote about what we like in the summer. Today, let’s talk about what we see in the summer! We see many things in the summer months: bugs, sunshine, friends and family playing outside, and much more! Encourage your child to read, I See Summer, by Charles Ghigna:
When the story is over, I encourage your child to do these three things:
- Talk about the things they see in the summer.
- Draw a picture of what they see in the summer.
- Write a short sentence about what they see in the summer. They should write, “I see _______________.”
Here is my sentence:

Please send me a picture of your child’s writing on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org.
Math Activity
We are going to continue learning our teen numbers. Today, we are going to learn about the number 19. 19 means ten and nine more. Here is a model of the number 19:

Encourage your child to watch this video about the number 19:
After the video is over, I encourage your child to do these three things:
- Count 19 items in your house.
- Jump 19 times and count each jump.
- Write the number 19 three times.
Work Time
I encourage your child to engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. To keep the consistency with what we do at school, I encourage you to follow the Plan, Do, Review process. Here is the Work Time process:
- Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with. Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.
- Work Time (45-60 minutes): Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.
وقت العمل : يجب أن لا يستعمل الأولاد الإلكترونيات . يستطيع الأولاد استخدام الألعاب التي تساعدهم في التخيل و البناء و الإبداع - Clean Up: When Work Time is over, encourage your child to clean up the area(s) they played in.
- Recall (5-10 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)
Fun Work Time Activity: Make Sensory Bags!
Sensory bags are a great for young children because it gives them an opportunity to explore with their sensory input. You need these materials to make a sensory bag:
- ZipLock bag(s)
- Shaving Cream
- Tape (to seal the bags more securely)
- Optional Items:
- Food coloring (for color)
- Beads
- Rocks
- Coins
Here are the directions to make sensory bags:
- Fill up the ZipLock bag with shaving cream. (If you are using food coloring, it may be best to mix the food coloring in with the shaving cream before putting it in the bag.)
- Put any optional materials in the bag with the shaving cream.
- Seal the ZipLock bag. Place tape over the bag to make it more secure.
- Play!
Outdoor Exploration
Today will be a beautiful day! I encourage you and your child to go outside for 60 minutes today. As a reminder, the Dearborn Public Schools playground equipment and sports fields are closed. This is a great day to go for a walk or play in the yard!
