Literacy Activity

A fun literacy activity your child can do today is label items in your house. Here are the materials you need for this activity:

  • Small pieces of paper
  • Writing utensil (pencil, crayon, marker, etc.)

Here are the directions for the activity:

  1. Go for a walk around your house with your child.
  2. Encourage your child to stop and look at something in your house.
  3. Ask your child what letter the item starts with. When you do this, really emphasize the letter sound. (For example, if your child is labeling a table, emphasize the letter, “T,” sound.)
  4. Encourage your child to sound out the letter sounds of the item and write it on the paper.
  5. When your child is done writing, encourage them to put the label on the item.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 until you are done with the activity.

You can send me pictures of your child’s labels to me on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org

Math Activity

Let’s play a basketball game today! Here are the materials you need:

  • (1) Bucket/Container
  • (10) Balls/Bean Bags/Toys/Socks (anything soft you have to toss will work)

Here are the directions:

  1. Give your child all 10 items to toss.
  2. Put the bucket at a distance from where your child is standing (make sure it’s not too far away and not too close).
  3. Encourage your child to toss one item in the bucket at a time. (NOTE: It is okay if your child does not get the item in the bucket.)
  4. As they toss each item, encourage them to count.
  5. When your child is all done tossing the items, encourage them to:
    1. Count how many items are inside the bucket.
    2. Count how many items are outside of the bucket.
    3. Count how many items they have total.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 as many times as your child wants.

For a challenge, encourage your child to play this game with 20 items!

Work Time

I encourage your child to engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. To keep the consistency with what we do at school, I encourage you to follow the Plan, Do, Review process. Here is the Work Time process:

  • Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.
  • Work Time (45-60 minutes): Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.
وقت العمل :  يجب أن لا يستعمل الأولاد الإلكترونيات . يستطيع الأولاد استخدام الألعاب التي تساعدهم في  التخيل و البناء و الإبداع
  • Clean Up: When Work Time is over, encourage your child to clean up the area(s) they played in.
  • Recall (5-10 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Fun Work Time Activity: Indoor Scavenger Hunt

Outdoor Exploration

The rain is finally going away! In addition, the weather is pretty nice today. I encourage you and your child to go outside for 60 minutes today. As a reminder, the Dearborn Public Schools playground equipment and sports fields are closed. This is a great day to go for a walk or play in the yard!
