Announcements

Hello and happy Monday and first day of June! I hope you all had a restful and wonderful weekend! I cannot believe it is already June. Summer will be here before we know it! Before we start today’s activities, here are some announcements…

Student Material Distribution
TODAY
(Monday, June 1) Salina Elementary is hosting a student material distribution from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM. This is for any student(s) who may have left some materials at school prior to the closure (examples may be clothing items, blankets, books, snow gear, etc.). Families will drive up, tell the staff the name(s) of the student(s), and the staff will put the materials in the families’ cars.
If you have any books from the school library, please return them on this day.
If you have a Chromebook, please keep it at your house until the fall.

Literacy Activity

Since the first day of summer is in June, let’s write about our favorite things to do in the summer! Encourage your child to write this sentence, “I like to _______________.” Here is my writing:

You may have to help your child write their words. This is okay! Please send me pictures of your child’s writing on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org.

Math Activity

Today, we are going to do a measuring activity! For our activity, we are going to measure how tall we are. All you need is something you can measure your child with (preferably items that are the same size). Here are some ideas:

  • Toys
  • Blocks
  • Socks
  • Forks
  • Spoons

Here are the directions for the activity:

  1. Encourage your child to lay down on the floor.
  2. Line up the items you chose to measure your child until they are the same height as your child.
  3. Encourage your child to count the items in the line.
  4. Ask your child, “How tall are you?” (They should say the number of items that are in the line.)
  5. Repeat steps 1-4, but let your child measure you.

Work Time

I encourage your child to engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. To keep the consistency with what we do at school, I encourage you to follow the Plan, Do, Review process. Here is the Work Time process:

  • Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.
  • Work Time (45-60 minutes): Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.
وقت العمل :  يجب أن لا يستعمل الأولاد الإلكترونيات . يستطيع الأولاد استخدام الألعاب التي تساعدهم في  التخيل و البناء و الإبداع
  • Clean Up: When Work Time is over, encourage your child to clean up the area(s) they played in.
  • Recall (5-10 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Fun Work Time Activity: Pretend to be a Doctor!
Dramatic play is extremely critical for a child’s development. Dramatic play allows children to develop communication skills authentically. It also allows children to explore their interests an imagination.
Prior to the school closure, the students developed an interest in our class doctor’s kit. They enjoyed taking care of the baby dolls, as well as their friends. Today, I encourage you and your child to pretend to be doctors and take care of your family members, dolls, toys, etc.!

Outdoor Exploration

Today will be a beautiful day! I encourage you and your child to go outside for 60 minutes today. As a reminder, the Dearborn Public Schools playground equipment and sports fields are closed. This is a great day to go for a walk or play in the yard!
