Weekend Activities for May 1-3, 2020

Announcements

Another week of online learning is complete! Now that it’s the weekend, let’s allow our brains time to relax. Before we dive into some suggested weekend activities, here is an announcement:

Materials Drop Off
Today (Friday, May 1) I will be dropping off materials to your houses for your children to use during the remote learning period. These materials are in a white plastic bag with your child’s name on it. I will leave the bag of materials by your doors. Per the State of Michigan’s Executive Order, we must respect the social distancing guidelines. If you or your child see me, I kindly ask that you and your child stay inside until I leave your doorstep. I am more than happy to wave to you through your windows at a respectable distance! This is to ensure the safety of your family.

Suggested Weekend Activities

As always, these activities are suggestions to give your family ideas to do this weekend. Below are some suggested activities:

Go Outside!
It looks like we will see some great weather this weekend! As always, I encourage you and your child to go outside for at least 60 minutes a day. The Dearborn Public Schools’ parks and sports fields are still closed. However, this would be a nice weekend to go for a walk or play in the yard.

Starfall
Take time to play Starfall’s ABC game. I encourage your child to focus on letters A-R: https://www.starfall.com/h/abcs/

Scholastic Learn At Home
Scholastic Learn At Home has fun and engaging stories and activities about various topics your child may enjoy. I encourage you all to check it out: https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome/grades-prek-k.html

Virtual Field Trip-Great Lakes
Bring a piece of Michigan home by taking a virtual field trip to the Great Lakes! https://www.greatlakesnow.org/educational-resources-v1/virtual-field-trip/

Work Time
I still encourage your child to engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. To keep the consistency with what we do at school, I encourage you to follow the Plan, Do, Review process. Here is the Work Time process:

  • Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.
  • Work Time (45-60 minutes): Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.
  • Clean Up: When Work Time is over, encourage your child to clean up the area(s) they played in.
  • Recall (5-10 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)
