Announcements

We made it through another week of online learning! Thank you all again for your patience and cooperation during this time! Here are some announcements:

Materials Drop-Off
On Friday, May 1, I will be dropping off materials to your houses for your children to use during the remote learning period. I will leave the materials in a bag by your doors. Per the State of Michigan’s Executive Order, we must respect the social distancing guidelines. If you or your child see me, I kindly ask that you and your child stay inside until I leave your doorstep. I am more than happy to wave to you through your windows at a respectable distance. This is to ensure the safety of your family.

Personal Activities and Call Schedule
Later today, I will send your child’s personal activity on, “Remind.” I will also send you the day and time Mrs. Askar and I will be calling families starting next week.

Literacy Activity

For our literacy activity today, we are going to focus on reading comprehension. Reading is more than memorizing words and reading with accuracy. Being able to comprehend, or understand, what you’re reading helps us understand what the reading is about. We read for comprehension in a variety of ways: what the book is about, the feelings the characters are showing, meaning of the text, etc. Comprehension can also help students make personal connections to stories and texts.

Today, the children are going to comprehend the character’s feelings in a narrative book. The narrative book we are reading today is, “Corduroy,” by Don Freeman. If you do not have the book at home, here is a read aloud found on YouTube:

As you are reading this book, pause the video at these times and ask your child these questions (NOTE: You do not have to write your child’s answers. However, I encourage you to engage in conversation with your child about their thoughts.)

  • Before reading the story, have your child look at the cover of the book. Ask them what they think Corduroy is feeling. You can say something like, “I wonder what feelings Corduroy is showing?  What do you think?”
  • 0:45: “Look at Corduroy’s face.  How do you think he feels?  How do you think the little girl feels?”
  • 1:28: “Corduroy has never been here before.  What do you think he is feeling?”
  • 2:02: “Corduroy thinks he found his button!  It looks like his button is stuck on the bed.  How do you think he is feeling right now?”
  • 2:09: “Corduroy fell off the bed!  Look at Corduroy’s face!  What do you think he is feeling?”
  • 2:33: “Corduroy is hiding under the covers in the bed.  What is he feeling now?”
  • 3:07: “The little girl came back to the store.  Look at her face.  How do you think she is feeling?”
  • 3:17: “The little girl saved up enough money to buy Corduroy!  How do you think that makes her feel?  How do you think that makes Corduroy feel?”
  • 3:43: “Corduroy said he has always wanted a home.  How do you think he feels now that he has a home?”
  • 4:15: “Lisa is hugging Corduroy.  Corduroy and Lisa are both smiling and said they have always wanted a friend.  How do you think Lisa and Corduroy are feeling?”

Math Activity

Last week the students went on a shape scavenger hunt. Today, the students will practice making shapes! Here are some suggested materials your child can use to make shapes:

  • Stuffing from an old pillow or stuffed animal that is no longer in use
  • Sticks
  • Crayons/pencils/pens and paper
  • Toys
  • Food (carrot sticks, celery sticks, crackers, apple slices, etc.)
  • Blocks

Encourage your child to make these shapes with the materials you chose to use:

  • Circle
  • Triangle
  • Square
  • Rectangle
  • Diamond/Rhombus

As your child is making their shapes, talk to them about the shapes’ corners, sides, and other attributes. Here are some suggested questions you can ask:

  • “How many sides does this shape have?”
  • “How many corners does this shape have?”
  • “Tell me about the length of this shape?”
  • “How are these shapes similar? How are they different?”

Work Time

Give your child at least 60 minutes of Work Time using the, “Planning Time, Work Time, and Recall,” process. As a reminder, here are the steps for this process:

  • Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.
  • Work Time (45-60 minutes): Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS.  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.
وقت العمل :  يجب أن لا يستعمل الأولاد الإلكترونيات . يستطيع الأولاد استخدام الألعاب التي تساعدهم في  التخيل و البناء و الإبداع
  • Clean Up: When Work Time is over, encourage your child to clean up the area(s) they played in.
  • Recall (5-10 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Outdoor Exploration

It looks like we may be seeing more rain today. If you can, I encourage you and your child to go outside for 60 minutes today. If you cannot go outside due to the weather, check out GoNoodle’s, “Good Energy at Home” https://www.gonoodle.com/good-energy-at-home-kids-games-and-videos/. They have a lot of fun exercise videos and activities you and your child can do at home!
