Goodnight, Gorilla, by Peggy Rathman is a favorite book of ours in Room 108! This wordless story is about a gorilla who obtains a zookeeper’s keys and follows him around the zoo to open all the cage doors.

A wordless story may seem strange, however, it helps young students learn basic reading skills. The skill this type of story teaches is how to read pictures. Reading pictures helps young students “read” by describing what is happening in the book. This also helps with their reading comprehension. By reading the pictures, the students are comprehending what they are reading by describing what is happening in the pictures.

• “What is the gorilla doing?”

• “Where are the animals going?”
• “What is happening on this page?”
• “What do you think will happen next?”

Listen to the observations your child is making. Before you read the next page, summarize what your child observed. For example, you can say something like, “You saw the gorilla take the zookeeper’s keys. Now the gorilla is getting out of the cage!”
