Week of 5-3-21

Happy May! I hope everyone had a great weekend. Here’s what’s happening this week:

*We still have a few folks who are taking the M-Step, so assignments won’t have as strict deadlines. There will also be a reduced number of assignments this week.

*On Monday we took our Mid-Module math test and our Week 2 Quiz on Benchmark. Both are still needing to be completed by the class, so the grading isn’t done yet, especially for the math test. I can’t close it to grade it until all students have taken it. Most children have completed the reading quiz, so you can ask your child to show you their score. The scores weren’t great and we are going to have to review the concepts before the end of the unit test next week. I’ll send out a message on Dojo when the scores are available for you to see.

*Picture Day is Monday for Group A and Tuesday for Group B. Dress to impress. You can order online (I sent instructions on Class Dojo) or send in the order on your child’s day.

*The Book Fair is here! Monday and Tuesday are our browsing days and your child will bring home a Wish List. If you’d like to purchase anything, please send it back with payment on either Thursday or Friday. You can also order online. Instructions on how to do that are attached to your child’s wish list.

*We will be having our weekly spelling test this Friday. With a short week next week, there won’t be new spelling words.

*Next week will be the Eid holiday. Therefore, there will be NO SCHOOL May 12-14. We’ll see everyone back in hybrid learning on Monday, May 17.

*As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please email me at: or text me on Class Dojo!

8 Week Summer Academic and Enrichment Program

Good morning,

Nowlin will be offering an 8 week Summer Academic and Enrichment Program. There are two options for enrollment a 9am-2pm and a 9am-5pm time slot. Nowlin has partnered with Wayne State University to create an extremely impactful program. As of now, the programming is set to be an opportunity for learning loss recovery and additional growth. A typical day will include Gardening and/or Mindfulness, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Engineering (coding, robotix, etc), Lunch and PE. What is designed will be structured and of high value. More information will be forthcoming as we get closer to the end of the school year.

I sent all families an email yesterday with link for registration. You can also come to the school to register or contact us if you did not receive the registration link.

Week of 4-26-21

Welcome to the last week of April! Here’s what’s happening:

*Congratulations to this week’s Student of the Week, Delilah!

*The M-Step has begun! This week (and next) your child will be taking the M-Step (a Standardized test in the state of Michigan) in Language Arts and Math. This week we will focus on taking the test and next week the focus will be on make-ups and completing any unfinished questions. The best thing you can do to help your child is to stress they try their best and have them get a good night’s sleep. Also, if your child has their own set of headphones, I encourage them to bring them. If not, that’s okay. I have some they can borrow and I sanitize them in between uses.

*Because of the M-Step, we were supposed to take the mid-module exam this Thursday. HOWEVER, that might change depending on how the students do taking the M-Step. A study guide will be coming Tuesday, but the test may not be until Friday or even next Monday. I will send a Dojo message when I know more.

*Picture Day is coming!!! It will be on May 3rd and 4th (depending on your child’s in-person day). More details will be coming home this week.

*In social studies we began our unit on economics.

*In science we are continuing to look at how energy is transferred from one object to another. Each week’s experiments can be done with common household items (balls, things to roll the ball on, things to knock down, etc.). I encourage the students to “think outside the box” to complete the activities. Please let me know if you need some suggestions on substitutions that can be made.

*Please help your child to remember to bring back their Acceptance and Tolerance Pledge.

*As usual, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please email me at: or text me on Class Dojo.

Week of 4-19-21

Welcome to a new week! Here’s what’s happening:

*Congratulations to last week’s Student of the Week, Xavier and this week’s Student of the Week, Zahra!

*This week we continue our math Module 5 with Topic D. Topic C quizzes were just completed today, so grades will be coming soon. I’ll let you know when I post grades.

*We begin a new ELA unit! Again, the test for the last module is still needing to be finished by a couple of students. Grades will be posted on those ASAP.

*This Friday we will have our weekly spelling test and reading quiz. The spelling words have a posted assignment everyday to practice them. The reading quiz has assignments everyday to help prepare.

*Speaking of this Friday, I will be absent. Group B is still to report to school at 9:40, as usual. Group A will have to work asynchronously.

*Please let me know if you’re not getting my Dojo messages. I’ve been told by a couple families that they haven’t gotten some of my messages.

*Today and tomorrow I will be giving the students a homework folder to help organize papers, now that we’re back in person. Please help your child remember to bring it to school on their hybrid days.

*As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please email me at: or text me on Dojo!

Week of 4-12-21

Welcome to a new week! Here’s what’s happening:

*We are back to hybrid! Group A comes to school at 9:40 on Mondays and Thursdays. They are virtual on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Group B comes to school on Tuesdays and Fridays and are virtual on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you need another copy of your child’s schedule, please let me know. When your child is virtual, they are expected to meet me on Zoom at 8:40, 12:45 AND 3:00.

*Friday we will be having our next math quiz and spelling test. Last Friday’s math quiz still has to be completed by 2 students. As soon as it is, the quizzes will be posted and I will notify families of students who scored less than 80%.

*We will also be finishing our latest Benchmark reading unit. Therefore, we will also be taking a test on our railroad unit.

*We’re finishing our historical narrative writing unit this week. Student-edited and revised copies are due by Friday.

*M-Step is coming. Fifth grade has begun their testing, and fourth grade will start theirs by the end of April. I will send more details as we get closer.

*Parent/Teacher conferences are this Wednesday, 4-7, only for teacher-invited families. I sent out Dojo invitations last week, but will be following up with a phone call to families who haven’t responded on Tuesday. If you didn’t get invited, I don’t have any concerns at this time.

*You should check your child’s Schoology grades weekly. Please let me know if you ever have any questions or concerns. You are also supposed to be getting weekly emails from Schoology on your child’s missing assignments. All parents and guardians are listed on their child’s Schoology, but let me know if you’re still not getting the emails.

Week of 4-6-21

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful break. Here’s what’s happening this week:

*As you already know, we are going to be working from home this week. The students will report to their specials’ classes as hybrid scheduled. However, they must come back to my Zoom, as I instruct them to, in order to be counted as “participating and present.” They are also required to start the day at 8:40 and end at 2:20 while we work from home.

*The spelling words have been posted in Schoology and there will be a test this Friday.

*In math we continue Topic B and working with equivalent fractions. We will have a quiz on Friday.

*In social studies, we are studying what is citizenship.

*In science, we are continuing to take a look at electricity and physical science.

*In writing, we are continuing our historical narratives.

*As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please email me at: or text me on Class Dojo!

Week of 3-22-21

Welcome to the last school week of March and March is Reading Month! Here’s what’s happening:

*Congratulations to this week’s Student of the Week, Fatima!

*This week is our last week of March is Reading Month. I know there was confusion about Pajama Day for school, so we decided to have Pajama Day on Wednesday when we’re on Zoom together.

*Bingo for Books is this Wednesday at 6pm on Zoom. If you’d like your child to play along, have them bring in $1 for 3 Bingo cards.

*We begin new units in science and social studies this week, as we also begin our last card marking period.

*Report Cards will be coming home this week.

*Next week will be Spring Break. We’ll see you back in school on Tuesday, April 6.

*To help students gain even more math knowledge and make a strong push to finish the year strong, I will now be offering extra credit for every Zearn lesson completed. To get maximum benefits, I’ve moved every student into Module 5 (our current module) and told the kids to not go more than 2 lessons past the lesson we are on. Speaking of which, we will be finishing Topic A on Tuesday and will have our Topic A Quiz on Wednesday.

*As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please email me at: or text me on Class Dojo.

Week of 3-15-21

Welcome to our first full week of Hybrid Learning! Here’s what’s happening:

*Congratulations to our Student of the Week, Miles!

*This week is our first full week of hybrid. Group A comes in on Monday and Thursday, while Group B works from home & checks in with me on Zoom 3 times a day & goes to their specials’ classes. Group B comes in on Tuesdays and Fridays, while Group A checks in with me & goes to their specials’ classes. Wednesday is all virtual. Everyone stays home on Wednesdays and Zooms with me all day. Every student was given a schedule 2 weeks ago. Please let me know if you need another copy.

*This week is also the last week of the card marking period. With grades due by 6pm on Friday, I gave the students until Monday the 15th to turn in old assignments, so I have time to grade and record this week’s work into my gradebook. Remember, you should have been getting weekly emails as to your child’s missing assignments this whole year and I’ve been asking families to communicate with me if they weren’t. I’ve also asked families to look at their child’s grades on Schoology & InSync. Your children know how to do this. As a courtesy, I’ve also been contacting families this semester when quiz and test scores are below 80%. There might have been a couple I missed because they clustered together and time got away from me or I was waiting for all students to complete them. You can also check those at any time. We are a team to ensure success for your child. I need you to be on top of it as much as I am. Thanks!

*This Thursday your child will be having their test on sound waves. A Nearpod slideshow was given last Friday as a study tool.

*We’re also finishing the reading unit, so there will be a unit test this Friday. As usual, there is also a spelling test on Friday.

*Friday is a Half Day. Group B will still come in at 9:40, but leave at 12:45. Group A will still login to Zoom at 8:40 and they’ll have both of their specials.

*As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please email me at: or text me on Class Dojo.

Week of 3-8-21

Welcome to a new week and the start of Hybrid Learning for 3-5! Here’s what’s happening this week:

*Our Student of the Week will now be picked on Wednesdays, so be on the lookout for that update!

*We have our Module 4 math test this Thursday. Your child will get their study guides on Tuesday and we will go over them in class on Wednesday. It will cover geometry: lines, rays, line segments, measuring angles, symmetry, & quadrilaterals.

*Group B comes into school on Tuesday, while Group A stays home and meets me online at 8:40, 12:45 and 3:00. Group B will come to school by 9:35 and stay until 2:30. Make sure to bring all tools: chrome books w/chargers, math book, pencil, dry erase board w/marker, scissors, coloring tools, scissors, & water bottle.

*Wednesday, Thursday & Friday will be virtual for everyone. Everyone will login at 8:40. Thursday at 12:20 is my appointment for my 2nd dose of the vaccine. Therefore, the kids will have assignments to work on until I come back. If I don’t feel well enough to teach in the afternoon, I will message you all on Class Dojo.

*This week in social studies we are continuing to learn about the branches of government, with the focus on the Legislative Branch.

*Next week we will be having our unit science test on sound waves. The study guide will be coming home at the end of the week.

*Since the card marking ends on March 19, and grades are due by 6pm, all assignments will be due by Monday, March 15. Anything not turned by then (other than new assignments that week) will receive a score of 0. You should be getting weekly emails of your child’s missing assignments AND you can ask your child to show you their missing assignments. If not, please let me know ASAP.

*As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please email me at: or text me on Class Dojo!
