One of our major expectations is for our students to grow more independent in various facets of life. One of these critical areas is to increase independence in personal care and to further develop self-help skills. With collaboration and support from our classroom teams and our support team, I am confident that every student is capable of growing more independent and participating in activities of self-care. Under the leadership of Josh Bodary and with support from Al (OT) and Andrea (OT), we have purchased personal care kits for all our students to work on these functional skills at a level that is appropriate to them. Please keep in mind that many academic concepts, communication, and motor skills can be addressed through functional activities like these.  It is important that parents know we will be working on this and we will need consent to use personal care products to support the learning.  A letter will be sent home to obtain permission from parents to begin this targeted instruction with our students. We will keep a file of all the consent forms in the main office and develop a plan for supporting this work.

On Monday December our class is going to Cabela’s in Dundee Michigan. At Cabela’s students will have the opportunity to gain more experience being in the community, dining at a restaurant, viewing a holiday display and large aquarium, opportunities for festive holiday pictures (taken by Howe staff). I am kindly asking that the students who eat please send in $15 for the purchase of their lunch there. Also, if you would like to come with us let know know so I can send you the iChat form that has to be completed and reviewed before you can ride the bus with us.
