Learning Activities for Wednesday, March 25th

What is Mrs. Stortini Doing?

I’m doing the same things you are! This morning we went for a walk, and after school time we played Monopoly: Star Wars Edition. JJ was the banker and was helping Luke add together the dots on the dice and make change with the bank.

Later on Rhett and I had a snack and watched HGTV (my favorite channel!) together.

How Are You Doing?

Our school social worker and I are here to help if you or your family need anything. If you like you can fill out this survey so we know better how to help you. Click the link below to fill out the survey.

Letter of the Week

We are working on the letter G this week, yesterday you practiced writing a capital G. Today let’s practice the lowercase g. Write the lowercase g five times and send me a picture!

When you’re done, dance and sing along to this fun letter G song.

Assignment

Today we’re going to work on some science. We’re going to make predictions (a guess) about what we think will happen, and then test our prediction. We’ll record our test in a graph so we can remember what happened!

Our science experiment today will be float or sink.

Float means to stay on top of the water.

This inner tube is floaing on top of the water.

Sink means to fall to the bottom of the water.

Image result for toy sinking in water
These marbles are sinking to the bottom of the water.

Step 1. Collect a few things from around your house that you don’t mind getting wet. This is what I found at my house.

Step 2. Draw a table like this on a piece of paper.

Step 3. Make your predictions (guesses) about if you think that item will sink or float. Write the word or draw a picture of the item in the column.

Step 4. Fill up a container with water. I used a flower vase, but you can use anything you have at your house like a bucket, water glass, or the bath tub!

Step 5. Test your predictions! Put each item in the water and see if they sink or float. Were your predictions correct? Were you surprised by any of the tests?

Step 6. Send me pictures so I can see your experiment!

Odds and Ends

As always, make sure you’re reading together for at least 20 minutes and get outside and go for a walk. It’s supposed to warm up and I am excited to see some sun after all of the clouds on Tuesday.

I will be sending out individual lessons for each child again on Thursday through Remind, so be on the look out for those messages as well.

Dearborn Public Schools is still doing grab and go meals for families in need. This is considered an essential service and is exempt from the Governor’s order.

Have a great day!

Learning Activities for Monday, March 16

Tomorrow we begin the first day of our remote learning experience! I am going to be sending you these activities the night before in order to help parents prepare and contact me through remind or email (stortij@dearbornschools.org) if you need alternative options or suggestions. I am here to help! These are also great activity ideas for all of your learners at home.

Please make sure you are sending me pictures of your child completing the activities (consider this your “attendance”)

Reminder of Suggested Schedule

While our children are at home, the most important thing we can do is to keep them in a routine. This helps comfort the child as well as provides some peace for you <3 . Here are some ideas of daily schedules you can use in your home:

This is the schedule I will be using at home with my boys over the next few weeks.
This is schedue that has become popuar on my social media news feed over the last few days.

Chores

Chores are an important and normal part of daily life, boys and girls as young as 2 years can begin to help around the house by picking up their toys, wiping the table after eating, etc. If your children do not already have assigned chores in your home I encourage you to sit down together and make a list of what each child is responsible for. Here is the chore chart I use at home with my 8 and 5 year old if you would like some examples.

This is our chore chart, we keep it on the refigerator in the kitchen and use a marker to check off the jobs that have been completed.

Assignment

  1. Sit down together as a family and make a daily schedule that will work for you. Feel free to use the examples I posted above or make up something different. Once your schedule is compete, send me a picture through remind. This will be your child’s attendance for Monday.
  2. Read together for 20 minutes.

I can’t wait to see everyone’s schedules! I miss you all, stay healthy!

A Message from the Principal regarding COVID-19

MARCH 12, 2020AMY MODICA | EDIT

Dear Dearborn GSRP Families,

With the latest COVID-19 pandemic now infiltrating Michigan it is best we stick to the facts and don’t pay attention to all of the “false” news on social media, but instead educate ourselves and parents regarding the science behind the virus.  Please access the Wayne County Health Department at the following URL for the most up to date information:

https://www.waynecounty.com/departments/hhvs/wellness/novel-coronavirus-information.aspx

I also want to share the steps that we are continuing to take in each GSRP classroom to support a healthy environment for our students.

  1. Our custodians will continue to clean and disinfect all surface areas including desks, tables, door handles, and other classroom items.
  2. We will have teachers serving the food to students during breakfast, lunch and snack. All food will be served by the teacher directly to the student for the time being.
  3. Students and staff continue to wash hands regularly throughout the day.

Good hygiene practices will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. Please follow these recommendations and encourage all family members to do the same.

  1. Stay home if you are sick, and advise others to do the same.
  2. Always cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or sleeve.
  3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  5. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and warm water are not available.
  6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The following resources were shared by the district administration team to support parents in discussing COVID-19 with their children. Please click on the links below to review these documents.

Talking to Children about COVID-19

Helping Children Cope with Stress due to the COVID-19 Outbreak

The health and safety of our students is always our first priority. We will continue to share information on the school blog as it becomes available. Additional information is also available on the district’s website.
