I hope you are all doing well today and staying healthy at home 🙂

I am going to add a few simple science experiments and activities that you can do at home this week or next.

This one is called “Magic Milk” and it’s from one of my favorite bloggers/educators Little Bins for Little Minds. You need Milk, dawn soap, Qtips and food coloring! The directions are on this link with a video as well!

This STEM activity is one that students may have done but is super simple and fun!

I hope you enjoy some at home activities!! Stay healthy!

Family, STEM and Distance Learning

Now that we are coming close to ending week 2 of distance learning, I wanted to share some of my OWN personal experiences and what I have seen from some of my students!

Mrs. Stetz’s Family: We have been diving right into distance learning and have had MANY bumps along the way. With three boys at home ages 9, 5 and 2, it feels like I take one step forward and 5 steps back! We have managed a “somewhat” schedule with math and Literacy on MWF and Literacy, writing and science Tues and Thurs. I also have to remind myself that the way my kids are learning is different and there will be mistakes, new experiences and time. Same with the way I support students at my schools and what I have been doing. I do know that my kids are missing school and their own friends and amazing teachers, but we will be back in the swing of things soon 🙂

Students: My Lego maze activity was a hit at my house and a family that I received these awesome pictures from!! These are the Szasz boys from Long Elementary! What an awesome job and great mazes! I love seeing student work and faces during this shutdown! Send me pictures to stetzk@dearbornschools.org or on class dojo!

I might have uploaded this site before but I think it’s great! It allows you to pick materials that you may have at home and gives you something to create! https://pbskids.org/designsquad/build/spinner/?fbclid=IwAR0gRbvBRkrP2KBXLi5D2bPcb4jLFVf3Y_n6pucMim-dnytiy_Oqnllahks

I have also been listening to some cool podcasts for kids!

I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!

Quick Activity Claim, Evidence, Reasoning!

GUESS THE MYSTERY ANIMAL:
Observe the close up photograph of the mystery animal. Look carefully for clues on what the animal could be. Then write your prediction in the comment section below. Include a Claim and your evidence. I am including some sentence stems to get you started.

CLAIM: I predict the mystery animal is ____________.

EVIDENCE: I observed the animal had ______________________________.That is why I predict the animal is ______________________________because______________.

If you had fun figuring out today’s Mystery Photo, here is a link to some more tricky animal photos that you can do with your family. I wonder how many you will get correct? https://www.

STEM Activities you can do at home!

Idea #1

Data Directions for Science Activities:
1. Draw & label your observations.
2. Then write a claim and evidence about what you noticed.

Example:
Claim: Spring is almost here.
Evidence: The weather is getting warmer and I noticed that the grass is starting to turn green.

Challenge: How can you write about signs of spring that you are noticing?
Be sure to use your senses of sight, hearing, touch, and smell to make your observations.

Idea #2

PBS Design squad spinner: click on the items you have at home. Spin. Get ideas on what you can build with them. Then come of with ideas of your own.

Week of 3/16

I will be putting together google documents to upload to google classroom and classdojo by tomorrow (3/16). On this sheet will be links to websites that give easy, at home STEM challenges and science lessons that can be done on the computer. Please stay safe and healthy 🙂
