ABC Song to sing with your child

We sing this song all the time at school.

Shapes

1.With your child watch the attached video on shapes and move along to the video to make the shapes with your arms. https://youtu.be/beTDz9HSNOM

2. After the video talk to your child about the shapes and have them draw the shapes on a piece of paper. With your help label each shape with your child. Circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and oval.

3. Then have your child create a picture using circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and ovals. They can draw a shape person, a shape animal, or a shape thing. When your child has completed their picture, have them tell you about the picture and write their words below the picture. Make sure your child writes his/her name on the back of the paper. Encourage your child to start writing his/her last name too!

4. Read with your child for 20 minutes.

5. Please share pictures of your child completing the activities with me.

Send pictures to my email: stawark@dearbornschools.org

After completing the scavenger hunt have your child draw a picture of something green they found. Write their words below the picture describing the item. Have your child write his/her first and last name on the back of the paper.

Dearborn Schools offering free breakfast and lunch pickup for students at six sites

Dearborn Public Schools is offering free pickup lunch and breakfast for students while school is closed for the mandatory shut down over the next three weeks.

Families will be able to stop in and pick up a bag with both breakfast and lunch for each child in the family.  Pickups will run daily from 10 a.m. to noon starting tomorrow, March 17 at Fordson, Edsel Ford and Dearborn high schools, McCollough-Unis, Salina Intermediate, and Woodworth Middle School.

Signage at each site will direct parents and students where to enter the building. Food will be near entrances to minimize the amount of time community members spend in the facilities.

Please note, meals are available to anyone age 18 and younger.  Students do not need to be present, and the Dearborn School student does not need to attend at that building.  A designated person can collect meals for multiple children.  Meals for Saturday and Sunday can be picked up on Friday.

The program will allow the District’s 20,700 students to continue to have access to healthy food.  Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week ordered all Michigan schools closed from March 16 through April 3 to slow the spread of novel coronavirus and cases of COVID-19.  Dearborn Schools is scheduled for spring break April 6 to 10, so school will not resume in the District until April 13.

The grab-and-go meals will be served at least through April 3.

Superintendent Glenn Maleyko praised the District’s food service team for quickly implementing this drastic change in service to meet the needs of families.

“We appreciate the patience of our families and community as we all try to adjust to this sudden change from closing schools,” Dr. Maleyko said.  “More than three quarters of our students qualify for free or reduced priced school meals.  We realize this food is important to our families, many of whom may be facing additional financial hardships from the sudden economic changes related to COVID-19.”

Check the Dearborn Public Schools website at www.dearbornschools.org for any updates or changes to the meal program or for other issues regarding the school closure.

ABCmouse Free Home Access

Hello GSRP Families,

To help our families during the next month, ABCmouse has offered schools free home access. This is a program that reinforces the skills taught in the classroom and is enjoyable for students.

When in-school learning isn’t possible, using research-based learning resources at home can help children stay engaged, provide them valuable learning experiences, and maintain some continuity in their lives.

By visiting this link www.ABCmouse.com/redeem and redeem your access code The code is: SCHOOL4638

If you need assistance redeeming this code or have questions, please contact the Age of Learning Customer Support team at support@aofl.com and they will be happy to help.

Hope everyone is doing well and please continue working on the daily activities given by your teachers and I will be also putting activities on this blog.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Modica

Planning for Our Time at Home

Good Morning Families! I hope everyone is doing well. As we prepare for this new normal for this extended time at home, I wanted to share with you some ideas to think about and consider for your children as we plan for this time of home learning.

Create a daily routine for you and your child and stick to it. Starting today, with the help of your child create a routine and write it down together. Be consistent with times Monday through Friday as though we are in school. Be sure wake up times and bedtimes remain the same as if your child was coming to school. In your routine set times for meals, snacks, school work, reading, outside time, play time, rest time, and chores. Be sure to set limits on screen time. This may be added to your routine but set a specific time and limit the time spent on devices. Hang your daily routine in a spot where you and your child can see it. The refrigerator is a great place to keep it.

Assignment

  1. For today’s learning activity, I am asking you to create a daily routine with your child. Please write down your routine together. Please share your routine with me by emailing a picture of your plan to me. Starting this evening I will be sending you activities to complete with your child for the following day. Please contact me by email with any questions (stawark@dearbornschools.org). Please make sure you are sending me pictures of your child completing the activities (consider this your attendance).
  2. Read with your child for 20 minutes.

Here is an example of daily routine to help you with creating one for your child. You can use this routine or create something different.

Please be sure to sign up for Cotter School’s Blog

Dear Families, please use the link below to sign up for Cotter School’s blog. This blog contains information and messages being sent out by the principal and office. The Cotter School blog will keep you informed and up to date regarding information about the Corona Virus and the school district in regards to this situation https://cotter.dearbornschools.org/

Letter from the Principal

A Message from the Principal regarding COVID-19

Dear Dearborn GSRP Families,

With the latest COVID-19 pandemic now infiltrating Michigan it is best we stick to the facts and don’t pay attention to all of the “false” news on social media, but instead educate ourselves and parents regarding the science behind the virus.  Please access the Wayne County Health Department at the following URL for the most up to date information:

I also want to share the steps that we are continuing to take in each of the GSRP classrooms to support a healthy environment for our students.

  1. Our custodians will continue to clean and disinfect all surface areas including desks, tables, door handles, and other classroom items.
  2. We will have teachers serving the food to students during breakfast, lunch and snack. All food will be served by the teacher directly to the student for the time being.
  3. Students and staff continue to wash hands regularly throughout the day.

Good hygiene practices will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. Please follow these recommendations and encourage all family members to do the same.

  1. Stay home if you are sick, and advise others to do the same.
  2. Always cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or sleeve.
  3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  5. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and warm water are not available.
  6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The following resources were shared by the district administration team to support parents in discussing COVID-19 with their children. Please click on the links below to review these documents.

The health and safety of our students is always our first priority. We will continue to share information on the school blog as it becomes available. Additional information is also available on the district’s website.
