Week of October 9th

Week of October 9th

Below is an overview of the concepts we will be working on this week:

Reading- We will be discussing characters, setting, and problem/solution.  We will also be building our comprehension and fluency by reading good fit books.

Math- We will continue to practice creating and reading bar graphs.  We will also be working on addition using the counting on strategy.

Writing- We will continue to reinforce using capital letters in the right places and ending our sentences with the appropriate punctuation mark.  We will also begin to discuss topic sentences, details, and conclusions when writing a narrative.

Science-  We will continue to discuss the five senses.  We will begin to focus on the sense of sound.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! 🙂

One of the key elements of math in first grade is learning and memorizing addition and subtraction facts.  One of the many tools we will be using in class is a website called Xtramath.  The information about how to find and log on to this website was sent home this past Friday.  If you need another copy of the instructions, please let me know.  This website will begin with addition quizzes and work up to subtraction.  It is a great tool that can be used at home for your child to practice their math facts.  As always, thank you for your support!

Caterpillar Sight Words

Caterpillar Sight Words

Your child should have brought home a letter, along with list 1 of their sight words, in their folder on Friday.  Once your child has mastered ALL the words on the list, sign your name on the half piece of paper, and send it back to school.  I will test your child on the words and if they pass, they will receive the next list.  The goal is for your child to complete all 12 lists by the end of the school year.  The list starts out with Kindergarten sight words and will continue through third grade.  The words on these lists should be memorized and not sounded out.  Your child should know them right away by sight.  If you have any questions regrading this, please contact me.  Thank you so much for your support in making sure your child is a successful reader! 🙂
