To the Family of _______________________ ,

Hello and wishing your family health and happiness as together we face these challenging weeks ahead.

It is my goal to stay in contact with my students and their families on a weekly basis.  As your student’s Special Education Resource Teacher, I will be available through my school email address to provide support for goals and objectives written into your student’s Individual Education Plan, as well as suggestions for adapting class work at home, and encouraging the daily practice of basic reading, writing and math activities.  It is our (teachers and staff) overall goal to help to maintain all that your student has learned this school year in order for him/her to make a smooth transition back into the school year.

Please do not hesitate to contact me through my school email  yarosd@dearbornschools.org  if you or your student have any concerns or would just like to exchange a friendly message!

Some suggestions to get us started . . .

  • Creating a weekday routine.  Students respond well to a predictable routine with structure that allows for flexibility.
  •  Planning for assigned school work.  Schedule a reasonable allotment of time throughout the day for school work allowing for breaks, exercise, family interaction, household responsibilities, etc.
  • Adaptations for school work.  I will be addressing this issue as it occurs.  Each student and assignment is unique and I can address your concerns individually.
  • Daily reading.  Have your student read daily for 20-30 minutes (silently and with a parent or older sibling).  Discuss reading passages.
  • Daily writing.  Have your student keep a daily journal, write a letter to a classmate or relative, or record information read from daily passages.
  • Daily math.  Have your student practice math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) for 10-15 minutes (by themselves and then with a parent or older sibling).
  • Resources available on line.  Classroom teachers have provided students with accessibility to on-line programs for rehearsal of reading for basic skills, comprehension and fluency as well the practice of basic math facts that can also be lots of fun!
  • Creating a visible time line.  Work with your student to create a weekly chart he/she can refer to and check off as the week proceeds.
  • Rewards!  Consider providing incentives for your student to work towards and look forward to!

Please realize I understand these are going to be some challenging weeks ahead for us as parents.  The enclosed are only suggestions to make what may seem like an impossible task possible.  Again, I am available through my school email address.

Greetings !

I hope this email finds you and your family continuing to stay safe and healthy!

We have been requested through our Special Education Department to ask for your feedback regarding the availability of technology in your home so that those of us who provide Special Services can plan to continue to support your student through the most accessible means possible.

  1. Do you have access to a device such as a laptop, desktop, ipad, chromebook, etc.?
  2. Do you have internet access?
  3. Do you have a printer?
  4. Do you have access to a phone during regular school hours?
  5. Do you require the assistance of a translator?

Please send your responses back to me through my school email address  yarosd@dearbornschools.org.  The Special Education Department has requested this information be received  by this Wednesday, April 1st.

I will be sending an additional email this week in regards to more opportunities for learning from home.

Special Ed 3rd Quarter Progress Reports will be mailed to your home next week.  Thank you for working with your student at home.   Keep up the good work!

Greetings!

I sent a survey earlier this week asking for information regarding accessibility of technology in your homes.  I am now following up with a website which contains Grade Level Packets for all Academic Subjects from Pre-School through 5th Grade.  There are 3 weeks of packets for each grade level.  I will forward additional packets as they are created.

Click on the website then select the packet of your choice.  Download the entire packet then select only the pages you would like to print.  Your student can now have paper copies to work on in addition to on-line assignments his/her teacher has provided.

The Grade Level your student is enrolled in at school may not necessarily be the appropriate Grade Level you should choose.  Most class work has to be modified by the classroom teacher or myself for your student to complete successfully.  Therefore, you may want to choose a packet from One or Two Grade Levels below their Current Grade Placement.  In addition, ask your student to attempt to read any selected work before printing.  I am also available for assistance through my work email:  yarosd@dearbornschools.org

Students, know I miss seeing you and working with you.  I will continue to keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers!

Greetings!

Hoping all continues to be well with you and your family, friends and neighbors.  You are always in my thoughts and prayers.

A couple of weeks ago I provided website information for Grade Level Packets for all Academic Subjects from Pre-School through 5th Grade.  At that time 3 weeks worth of assignments were available.  As promised, I am forwarding the same website with an additional 2 more weeks of assignments.  You will now have Weeks 4 and 5.  Here is the website:

As suggested:

  • Click on the website then select the packet of your choice.
  • Download the entire packet, then select only the pages you would like to print.

As recommended:

  • Most class work has to be modified by the classroom teacher or myself for your student to complete successfully.
  • Therefore, choose a packet one or two Grade Levels below their Current Grade Placement.
  • In addition, ask your student to attempt to read any selected work before printing.

I am available for assistance through my work email:

yarosd@dearbornschools.org

I will be contacting you by phone within the next week to follow through with providing your student a Contingency Plan to his/her Individual Education Plan (IEP) addressing modifications to Goals and Objectives, Accommodations and Service Time due to a change in our delivery format just through the remainder of the current school year.  When school resumes, your student’s current IEP will resume to it’s original provisions.

Again, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I look at my emails daily.  Take good care!
