Math Scavenger Hunt

Today is a good day for a scavenger hunt!

While you are searching and counting you can also use your number flash cards I sent home to show your child the number as you talk about it.

Who says math can’t be fun?!?

Speech Ideas

In the last packet that was sent home you should have received a farm print out.

You can use this print out in several ways:

  • Cut out the squares and combine to make a book.  While reading make the animal sounds and have your child try to make them too!
  • Cut out the animal squares and lay them out picture side down, flip one square over at a time and insert that animal into the song “Old MacDonald Had A Farm”, repeat until you’ve used all of the animal cards
  • Lay the animal cards out, make an animal sound and have your child find the animal that matches the sound

*Check out our ClassDojo to see a video of Ms. Ashley using the printable*

Letter of the Week

Our letter of the week is the letter X!

  • Encourage your child to try to make the letter X sound
  • Find things around the house that start with the letter X or have the letter X in the word
  • Write the letter X and then have you child trace over it with different colors or trace over it with their finger

Our word of the week is “Next”

To practice this word at home:

  • Take turns playing with a toy “You play with it first and _____ is next.”
  • Model using the word:
    • Next, we will…
    • What do you want to do next?
    • Let’s put this next to the couch, table, etc…

Movement Monday

It’s Monday again and you know what the means…Double gym day! Has your child been getting exercise?

Check out our gym teacher Ms. B’s blog for movement ideas: https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/budopw/

*Parent please note that Ms. B teaches students of different ages and abilities so only choose the activities that are most appropriate for your child*

Here are some ideas to get your child moving today:

  • Practice walking up and down stairs
  • Take a family walk
  • Practice hopping – play hopscotch
  • Play tag – the kids love to be chased 🙂

Fine Motor Friday!

On a normal Friday at school we practice our fine motor skills.  Today, let’s focus on sensory activities! These ideas all involve water so to eliminate a mess do this in the tub or outside if its warm enough. 🙂

Toy Washing Station: Fill an empty plastic bin with soapy water and give your child toys to wash.  (Make sure the toys are water safe!)

Sink or Float: Use the same toys or find different objects from around the house and see if they sink or float.  This is a good time to practice vocabulary with your child.  Model language by talking them through what happens to each object. Ex: “What happened to the toy car? That car sunk to the bottom” “What do you think will happen to the ball? Look! The ball floats!”

Pouring Station: Give your child plastic cups, measuring cups, pitchers – anything you have around the house – and allow your child to practice pouring the water.

Early Subtraction

Today we are going to work on subtraction with the Five Little Monkeys!

Check out ClassDojo to see a video of Ms. Ashley using the Five Little Monkeys activity that was sent home.  If you haven’t received your next packet yet, you should be any day! Check your mailbox!

Speech Therapy through Play

Here are some ideas for how to work on speech while playing with your child.

When playing with blocks, puzzles, ball, bubbles, etc.:

  • Work on taking turns/joint attention
  • Label the toy – type, color, size
  • Withhold the toy until your child requests it through sign/gesture/word
  • Use core vocabulary when playing: up, down, in, out, on, off, more

When playing with toy cars:

  • Make car noises “beep beep, vroom, crash”
  • Make your cars STOP and GO.  At school the children like when we do a 1, 2, 3 count before ex: “1, 2, 3…Go!”
  • Say “uh oh” or “oh no” and make the cars crash into something

Our letter of the week is the letter W!

Letter W activities:

  • Encourage your child to try to make the letter W sound
  • Find things around the house that start with the letter W
  • Write the letter W and then have you child trace over it with different colors or trace over it with their finger

Our word of the week is “want”

To practice this word at home:

  • Have your child make request for things they want/Ask them what do you want?
  • Model using the word:
    • I want that
    • I want more
    • I want to be finished
