Lowrey Spirit Week

We are holding our annual Spirit Week On Monday June 4th – Friday June 8th.  Every day there will be a different theme and it is expected that the A2 teachers (7th/8h grade), 1st hour teachers (6th grade) and classroom teachers (elementary) email Fudwa (ms) or Samia (elem) with a total of participants for that day.  We are having a competition both for MS and ELEM and the winning grade from each school will get rewarded with a field Day. The following are the themes:

Monday – Sports day (fav team or athlete) they may wear hats

Tuesday – Dress like a professional (dress in what you would like to be when you grow up)

Wed – Dress like a character out of a book, movie, t.v. show etc…

Thurs – Crazy mismatch Day (hair, clothes…etc)

Fri – Lowrey Spirit Day (Lowrey shirts or school colors) be creative!

Please stress to the students that must adhere to the Lowrey dress code.

Here’s the bonus…If a teacher participates that class receives 3 points for every day the teacher participates. Students receive 1 point per student per day.

We would love all staff members to participate! It will be fun and promote positive culture for the students!

A Cultural Onion of American Culture

Students are working in pairs to complete “A Cultural Onion of American Culture.” Next, they have to bring images to school tomorrow for each one of the layers. For example, they can draw and color, print in color, or cut images from magazines. DUE TOMORROW! Lastly, they will work with their table partners to complete the activity in class.

Homework 05/11/2018

Students were to complete the Food and Culture (Oakland Rubicon/Atlas) Graphic Organizer. They were to compare and contrast the “American Culture to their Native Culture.” Due Tuesday, May 15th!

Function Questions Example from “American Culture”
Economic

·         How is food produced and distributed in this culture?

·         Who has access to certain kinds of food and who does not?

·         To what degree does access reflect economic factors?

 
Social

·         Who eats with whom, when, and where?

·         Do certain foods carry symbolic messages or indicate special roles or status?

 
Political

·         Who prepares food?

·         Who serves it? Who cleans up?

·         In what other ways might positions of power and authority be reflected in food customs?

 
Aesthetic

·         How much attention does this culture pay to the aesthetic aspects of preparing and eating food?

·         How does this vary with the social, economic, or political context?

 
Values and Beliefs

·         Which foods are highly valued in this culture?

·         Do certain foods have special religious or ritual values?

·         What are they? Are any foods taboo?

·         Why? What meaning (beyond basic sustenance) does food have in this culture in general?

Population, Migration, and Urbanization

Students are to complete their assigned task for the Population, Migration, and Urbanization vocabulary flashcards. They are due tomorrow, 5/02/2018! Next, students are required to study and review the 18 vocabulary words and definitions for the Vocabulary Quiz.
