I found these articles of clothing in my closets so I KNOW they belong to my students.  However, none of the owners seem to recognize them nor claim them.  I’m hoping that I’ll have better luck with parents. 🙂

I am so Thankful for computer techs 🙂

Now I just have to locate some of the pictures I’ve taken of my students.  Hopefully I can upload photos of them with READ TO SOMEONE, which is part of our Literacy Program.  Here goes…

I am told that my computer needs more memory and I am awaiting that installation!!  In the meantime, I am trying to use other teachers when their computers are available (and I am available).

Thanks for the great response with their homework.  I told them that they would really have to pay attention to the directions because I would be unable to post anything on my computer to parents.  Looks like they were listening very well. If your student did not bring in their homework today, that’s ok.   Needs/Wants Assignment is due tomorrow.

Thanks also for the boots and shoes. When the wind chill is a bit higher, we’ll enjoy some snow time.  🙂

Snacks are looking great for now.  I’ll let you know when we need to restock our cupboard.

I think Winter is starting to show it’s face with the white fluffy flakes this morning!  Please make sure your child wears proper clothing for the temperatures.  Boots and shoes are needed.  Your child should wear their boots to school and change into shoes.  The students sit on the carpet and we don’t want snow tracked in on their shoes and melting on the carpet.  No one wants to sit on wet carpet!  So, wear boots to school and a pair of shoes in the backpack.

READING-We continue our unit on Transportation.

MATH-We will be connecting domino dots and the written numeral.  We also will be figuring out missing addends up to 15.  For example, I will hold 13 sticks, pencils, crayons in my hand.  Put some behind my back.  Show them how many I am still holding in my hand.  How many are behind my back?

Today we played a game called “Roll and Record.”  Each student rolled 1 die and then recorded the number on a chart. They circled the number that was the first to make it to the top.  When all were finished we made graph to show which number was rolled the most (or made it to the top first).  Take a look…

I hope you are enjoying these beautiful days of fall.  I spent the weekend celebrating my mom’s birthday with all of my sisters and their families.  Yesterday, instead of raking leaves, I opted for a ride to Somerset to spend time with one of my daughters and 2 granddaughters.  What a lovely weekend.  I hope you enjoyed yours!

Boy, have we been busy in here!

First, we had fun last Friday in our Halloween costumes.  Sorry the cold rain came that night but I hope you had fun anyway.

I am so impressed with the students taking it upon themselves to write a book at home–all on their own!  WOW!

Great job Leo.  Thanks for sharing your story.  It was interesting to read what happened when the boy’s family climbed the tree.  They sure did travel!

Yesterday we spent all afternoon doing math and science.  First we used magnifying glasses to check out some pumpkins.  We sure found some interesting features when we took close looks.  Then we predicted which pumpkin would have more seeds…Pumpkin A     or    Pumpkin B.  We entered our Predictions  in our Science Journal.  Then we cut open the pumpkins and dug out the seeds.  Take a look.

I know I didn’t get everyone-I was busy helping to keep the seeds/pulp on the table and washing hands.  They sure enjoyed emptying those pumpkins.

Next we entered our data findings into our Science Journal.

Today we spent the entire morning reading, predicting, discussing the story “The Little Red Hen.”  (It starts with planting a “seed”–get the connection?  The kids did.)  Then we identified and made the characters.  Next we wrote verbs (action words) that described what the hen was doing in the story.  (Plant, cut, grind, bake)  They cut out the characters and verbs and can retell the story.  Ask your student to retell the story to you.

This afternoon we spent with Math and Science again.  First we predicted if pumpkins would sink or float.  We tallied our responses.

We entered our predictions in our Science Journals.  Back to the table to perform the experiment!!

Boy, were we surprised!!  Pumpkins float!!  (You should have heard the squeals of surprise!)

Next we tried paper clips.  Sink?  Float?

We were confused…pumpkins are heavier that paper clips and yet pumpkins float and paper clips sink?  Hmmm

I wonder what we’ll discover tomorrow?

Reminder that today is LIBRARY DAY and HOMEWORK IS DUE.

Also, tomorrow is Picture Retake Day.  If you want a retake of your student’s picture, you must return the pictures already taken.  If your student was absent on Picture Day and you would like pictures taken, send in the order form along with payment for the pictures.  Need a form?  Check in the office.

Our weekly theme is Getting Along.

Lots of review this week as we end our 3 week unit on FRIENDS.  We will review the words  like, a (remember to read this as “ahh”) and our letters S s  P p.  We will also be identifying areas of reading on which we need to focus to be good readers.  Those areas are:

Comprehension –understanding what we read or is read to us

Accuracy-hearing, working, reading with good language

Fluency-recognizing letters, sounds, and words

Expanding-aware of print,  increasing vocabulary in reading, writing, and speaking

WRITING-Writing a good sentence.  First comes the idea that you want to write.  Say the sentence/idea/thought.  Does the sentence make sense?  All of this is done before we write any words.  Then we begin writing, stretching out each word, listening for sounds and writing the letters that go with the sounds.  This is why it is important to know what sounds each letter makes.  Next we have to know HOW to write each letter.  There is a lot to writing!

MATH-We’ll discover ways we can use our bodies as tools for understanding and applying mathematical skills and concepts.  We also will begin another section which has these main areas of focus:

-concepts of addition and subtraction through concrete acvtivities

-number writing

-to extend number comparison skills

-skip counting by 10’s

-introduce the pan balance
