Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Week of March 2-6

As the saying goes, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” and March is doing just that!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

READING-Week 2 of Unit 7   SEASONS

WRITING-We’ll be writing Questions and Answers.  After writing,  students are taught to reread the sentences and ask themselves, “Does that make sense?”  If not, revise it.  Then edit it for spelling and punctuation.

SPELLING-Sorry about missing last week’s test!  Augh…just cramming in so many extras on Friday lead me to forgetting all about the Spelling test.  We made corn muffins with Mr. Marks ( a dear friend of mine who just retired from teaching last June.  He so enjoys kids so he pops in every now and then.  I never really know when he’s coming but we always have a great time together.)  We did some Math and Science along with the baking.  We had 4 choices of condiments to enjoy with our muffins.  We predicted which topping would be the favorite–butter, honey, maple syrup, or milk.  After eating the muffins, we made a graph of our favorite.  Guess which one was the favorite?  Ask your Kindergartener 🙂

I digressed-sorry.  Spelling words for this week are from the an family.  fan   man   pan   tan

Tuesday

I’m so glad to be back!  We were missing 4 friends today…Sandy, Celina, Aya, and Lola.  We hope they will be back soon with us.

We had a great day yesterday.  We talked a lot about weather and temperature and the difference between them.  We had a Scavenger Hunt for Math-with partners, they found 3-D shaped objects in the room.  We read and wrote many words with the short sound.  That’s a tricky sound to hear.  Think “egg.”  Say egg slowly to hear the short e sound.  We had READ TO SELF and they were amazing with their reading stamina.  🙂

For Math today we will be discovering the dime.  Since we’ve already explored the penny and nickel,at this rate, by June I might be teaching them about how investments or the Stock Market!  🙂

I’m ready for another day of fun and discovery with my students!

Week of Feb., 23, 2015

Hello and welcome back from Mid-Winter Break! I hope you managed to stay warm and enjoy some family time.  I am excited to see my kids tomorrow…I’ll bet they’ve grown, some have lost teeth, and have many stories to tell me.  I can’t wait!

We will begin Unit 7-WEATHER.  This week’s theme is Kinds of Weather.   We will read a non-fiction book called A Rainy Day. During the week we will discuss the difference between weather and temperature.

LETTER-  “E  e”

WORDS- This  this   Do  do”

WRITING-We will work on writing a weather report.

I have developed a writing workshop and my students are now in full swing of the writing process. My weekly writing routine is–

Mondays I introduce our writing focus for the week. Tuesdays we work on the focus together and find examples in our reading or how we use the writing in every day life.  Wednesdays the students do their prewrite.  Thursdays I revise and edit with each student.  Fridays we publish and share our writings.  As you can see, they are very busy with reading and writing. My students have been using this routine for several months now and are comfortable with new weekly expectations. (For example, students now know that all sentences begin with a capital letter, have spaces between words, and end with punctuation.  They also know that certain words, like our Reading Words, need to be spelled correctly.  They know where to find them around the room.  Students also know to use good, new, descriptive vocabulary and correct grammar.) It’s so exciting to watch them grow into becoming readers and writers.  I was reading their Journals recently and was noticing with pleasure how far they have come and we’re only half-way through the year!

SPELLING WORDS-We will work with the et chunk.

get   met   pet   set   this   do

I have a”helper word” for each of the short vowels.  Their “helper word ” for the short e is “egg.”

short a is “apple”     short is “egg”    short i is “igloo”

short is “octopus”   short is “umbrella”

MATH-We will work with the dime.  We’ll also play a coin exchange game.

SCIENCE-We’ll be discovering materials that help with waterproofing.

SOCIAL STUDIES-We will begin a 2 week study of different jobs and workers in different weather (this week’s theme) and seasons (next week’s theme.)

BUDDIES-On Friday, we will make a project with our Buddies.  Hint…he has a birthday this month and his face is on some money.  Hmmmm

If you have any extra magazines at home, I could use them in here for a project next week.  Thanks.

Thank you for all of the lovely Valentines and chocolates.  WOW!!  I need to get started back on my running program. 🙂

On a personal note…my husband was discharged from the hospital and now begins the long road to recovery. His world revolves around meds, doctor appts., tests, etc.  We had no idea how close and desperate was his health.  Thank you for your support and understanding.

See you in the morning!!!!

Dear Parents,

A few reminders…

I’m being reminded of $1.00 donation tomorrow for charity. This is in place of last Monday’s Talent Show, which was cancelled due to the Snow Day.

Tissue Boxes- they’ll be used for Valentines. Please send in an empty box ( rectangular shape) either tomorrow or Thursday.

For the Valentines-I won’t be sending home a class list of names.  Please just have your child sign THEIR name on the Valentines. Reading 25 other names ( times 25 student) usually leads to a lot of ” confusion .”

Great job on the Pizza Hut Reading Logs!

Watch for those Spelling Words- keep practicing them.

Update on the home front- My husband had the Open Heart Surgery on Jan .30. He came through it well. Although it was a long surgery, the surgeon was pleased with the results. The surgeon said he had performed over 7,000 heart procedures and my husband’s aortic valve & aneurysm was one of the worst he had ever seen. Now he has 8 weeks of recovery and the cardiac rehab. Thank you all for your prayers and words of comfort.
