Week of March 20, 2017

Thank you to our Guest Readers!  The students enjoy having their family member read to their classmates.

Today we had lots of Dearborn High School football team players come in for a visit.  Many of them have been in my class when they were a Kindergartener and they love to be back in the room.  “Every thing is so small in here!”

Anyway, 3 young men read to our class.

One of the players is Alex Moustafa, Maya’s big brother!  I’m sorry that I didn’t get the names of the other 2 readers but here are their plans after next year’s graduation…

The young man on the far left wants to be a Marine Biologist.  Alex wants to be an astronaut and the reader on the right wants to play for the NFL.  It is so gratifying to see these people and hear of their future plans.  Thank you to these players for giving up their class time to come and read to us and encourage READING!!

Th last picture is the Kindergarteners vs. DHS Football Players.  The tallest player is a former student of mine, Zane Berry

Here’s a look at next week…

READING-We will continue with Informational Reading as we begin our next unit –PLANTS.

Our focus will be trees.

The kids are very interested in learning new facts and I hope you are enjoying learning along with them.

WRITING-We will be writing about trees.  This past week we have been working with adjectives ( words that describe nouns) and the students are using them quite well in their writing.  We will write about treesand use adjectives to describe the trees.

SPELLING-SUPER FANTASTIC JOB WITH THE SPELLING THIS WEEK!!!!!!Keep up the daily practice.

gap  cap  lap  tap  nap  flap   little   down  we =9 words

MATH- Geometry     I’m off to the store this weekend to get seeds, soil, and cups (for the Reading ,Writing, and Science) AND PLAYDOH, marshmallows, gum drops, toothpicks for our Math unit.  We will be building 2-D and 3-D shapes.  Fun days in here.  We also will be talking/reviewing about attributes (tall, short, thick, thin, color. shape, size)  Ask them to hide something and then describe that item to you, using attributes  of the item.  they like this game.

SCIENCE-Seeds and Living and Non-Living things

SOCIAL STUDIES-I am finishing the Assessment on the students.  All of them are doing exceedingly well.

On a personal note, I am so proud of these people.  They are just blossoming into good students AND responsible, kind people.  I truly enjoy every day with them and miss them on the weekends.  They are my world.

Have a great weekend.

Important Running Club Announcement

Important Running Club Announcement

Due to overwhelming response and lack of volunteers, we have to revise our running club schedule.

Beginning tomorrow (Thursday), we will split the runners into groups.

Tuesdays: Kindergarten-2nd gr.

Thursdays: 3rd-5th gr.

Students may only come on their designated day, and siblings are not allowed to wait unsupervised. Since the weather has been cold and windy we have had to have the children practice indoors, and the hallways become overcrowded with over 130 students participating.  Please understand that we are making this change to keep practices more productive and focused and for the safety of all of the runners.

We are hoping that April’s weather forecast will be more favorable for running outside.  Coach Julie and the PTA will notify everyone when all classes will be able to participate on both days again.

Please note:  Tomorrow’s (Thursday) running club practice will be for 3rd-5th grade only.

Homework for tomorrow (Wed)

Bring in 2 things that rhyme.

Also, please check your child’s clothes…there is a wet spot on my carpet and, well, …

Look at my fantastic kids!!

Yesterday I started a unit.  I wanted to stay with the school writing genre of Informational.  I chose BEARS.  Together we created a KWL chart. That stands for

K (what do we know about a topic)

W (what do we want to know/questions)

L (what have we learned about the topic-to be completed at the end of the unit)

It is impressive to see what the students already know about a topic.

Here’s a picture of yesterday’s chart.   A report topic

I copied this chart and taped it to their desk so they can use it as a reference when they write their Book Report on Bears!

Today we reviewed the chart and created a word web from our chart.  Notes for a report, aka note cards 🙂

Next we chose a word from the web and made up a sentence using that word.  We circled the word that we chose from the web.  aka “rough draft”

Tomorrow we will begin putting together several sentences to create our Book report about Bears.

Thursday we will Revise and Edit the writing.

Friday we will Publish our Book Report and share with our classmates!

Needless to say, I will not get to all of the Book Bags this week.  🙂

Here are some pictures of the hardworking students with a partner.  I am very proud of their efforts and focus on the task!

We also had time for another Guest Reader…Isabella’s Daddy!

Just another day in here!  🙂
