Week of October 1, 2018

Can you believe that October is right around the corner??  I hope you can get outside and enjoy this terrific weather.  Here’s what’s coming up for next week.

READING-APPLES!!

Monday-Under the Apple Tree      Visualizing a Story

Tuesday-The Apple Pie Tree           Sequencing a Story

Wednesday-Amelia Belelia’s First Apple Pie     Character Traits

Thursday-Johnny Appleseed          Identifying key information in a story

Friday-Apples. Apples, Apples        Text Features

WRITING-  OPINION WRITiNG   “I like a  _________.”

LETTERS-  F  f

WORDS- like  A  a

By now, your student should know the sounds connected to the letters we have worked with so far and how to write the letters.  They also should know how to read and write the words we have done.

M  m     A a     D  d     O o

I     Am   am    At  at   See  see   A  a

Please practice these with your child.  Start a sentence for them to write and finish.  “I  like a __________.”   I see a ______.”  “Am I at ___________?   I am at _________.”   Remember to add the punctuation too!!  They know periods at the end of sentences and  question marks come at the end of questions.

MATH-Last week we worked with the concept of zero and worked with numbers 0-5.  We will now work with numbers 6-8 in different configurations (vertically, horizontally linear configurations, arrays, scattered and circular)

Write the numeral 7.  Compose the number 7 with spoons, etc.  Ask, “How is your 7 different than mine?”

SOCIAL STUDIES-“Who am I and how do I get Along With Others?”

Today we took the Math portion of the NWEA.  Some great scores in here!

We also had our first FIRE DRILL.   They all did very well…lots of directions to follow.

By now all students have a BOOK BAG that goes home with them.  there is a note inside of the BOOK BAG that tells when the BOOK BAG should come back for reading to me and for new books.  The kids have already told me about reading to family members, pets, stuffed animals, grandparents, etc.  That is fantastic!

Thank you for your support on the home front.

Remember… NO SCHOOL TOMORROW FOR KINDERGARTEN.

For your future planning, PICTURE DAY will be Thursday, October 18.

Enjoy your long weekend with your Kindergartener!

Today’s Peace Assembly

Here are a few quick photos of our Peace Assembly outside around the Peace Pole.  We are holding up pinwheels of Peace.  As they twirl around in the wind, we think of Peace twirling around the whole world.

Welcome new friends!

Today 2 new friends joined our class!  They are Swallowtail caterpillars.  We have named the little one…”BABY PARSLEY.”  We named the other caterpillar ‘STRIPEY.”

Ask your Kindergartener why we gave them those names?

Meet STRIPEY

You will have to look carefully for Baby Parsley.

We are enjoying our new friends!

BOOK BAGS-Check to see on which day your child’s BOOK BAG is due.

Friday-NO SCHOOL FOR KINDERGARTEN

Please establish a routine for your child when they come home. Make it THEIR  responsibility to take out the day’s papers, notes, and set them on the table for you to see.  Then THEY put their backpack by the front door, in the closet, their room…  Papers should not be coming back to school, stuffed in their backpack from the previous day.  Make it THEIR responsibility to attend to this.  These seemingly small responsibilities carry over into the classroom and the students are proud of their accomplishments.  I

I think that about covers everything.  If not, I’ll send another post.

Have a great weekend.

Parent Meeting

I forgot to mention…

Beginning next week your child will be bringing home a BOOK BAG with a couple of books in it.  Your child is to read the books to you during the week and return the BOOK BAG on the day indicated.  On “their day” I will meet with them in a small reading group or on a one-to-one for reading strategies, etc.  Another reading opportunity for you with your child.  Connect child to text, text to text (“Does this remind you of another book we have read?”), text to world connections…

MATH-on Mondays I will send home a MATH PACKET.”  They pages are to be completed throughout the week and returned on Fridays.  I will be teaching the lessons all week so your child should recognize the Homework page when they see it that night.  Monday I will start with Lesson #14.  so look for HOMEWORK HELPER # 14 to reinforce they day’s lesson.

As you may have noticed, we are going very slowly at the beginning of this program.  I participated in piloting this program last Spring and the district has purchased the program for 5 years.   Your Kindergarten child is in the perfect spot to begin this learning.  We are already working with composing and decomposing numbers! Do you remember doing that when you were in Kindergarten??

I’ll post later for next week’s happenings.

Thank you to all those who attended last night’s Parent Meeting.  You are making an investment in your child’s education and, to your child, you show them how important their education is to you.  Thank you so much.
